Anyone out there suffer from insomnia?  If so, what do you do for it?

If I can't sleep, I pop a couple 50mg tabs of diphenhydramine.  It's the active ingredient in Sominex (although Sominex tabs are only 25mg), and about 1/3 the price when you buy generic.

I do sometimes. I just get on these boards until I can barely read anymore/my eyes blur out. That's when I know to shut down the computer and go pass out.

A quarter of a tablet of Actifed works really well. I am a night person and used to go to bed at 2 or 3 a.m. and sleep till 11; had a lot of insomnia then. Now I go to bed at 11 or midnight and get up at 5:30 -- no more insomnia....

All the over the counter stuff does is wind me up....does not work at all!

Most of them used to do that to me too -- you fall asleep for a couple of hours and then wake up wired. Actifed doesn't have that effect tho' and just a very small dose works...

When you get to sleep do you stay asleep?  Falling asleep has been impossible for me at times, but I can stay up for fifty hours and sleep forever when I finally do fall asleep.

When I was younger I tried to get help for my intermittant insomnia (Give me drugs, doc), but I got the warm milk lecture.  I don't know if insomnia is very well understood.  Seems like if it doesn't bleed or ooze, it doesn't get treated.

I cannot stay asleep...I sleep for a few hours and then I am wide awake again....now if I stay up for hours on end and totally exhaust myself I will sleep...but it is fitfull and I wake up just as tired as I was before I went to sleep.  There is nothing worse than to lay in bed...knowing you must sleep..and can't!

My doc is pretty good about believing me when I cannot sleep...I went to see him again yesterday and we are gonna try something else to get me back in a normal pattern.  Time will tell if it works...

Like SS, nothing helps to get me to sleep.  It's not insomnia - I just don't get to sleep easily....

I just sleep when I can although I try to set myself a limit of staying up on the PC until midnight only, as that only leaves me 6 hours till I have to get up....

But usually I toss and turn, sometimes for hours especially if it is warm, I can't get to sleep if I am hot... ;)

I've been a borderline insomniac practically my whole life.  I can usually average between 4 and 5 hours of sleep a night (waking up at least three times during those hours).  Sometimes I have some bad spells.  The worse one was when I went for five days on only 3 hours of sleep, and over the counter sleeping pills didn't work.  Talk about a walking zombie... I try to avoid pills, but occasionally, I will take them.  Most of the time, I just lie in bed and daydream (though technically, it's at night).  You kind of get used to it after a bit.

I think a lot of people suffer from insomnia on this board!  Even I do!  But at least I try to go to sleep between midnight and 8 am.  But I have never gotten up in the middle of the night to jump on this board, and a lot of the people on this board like to jump in during the middle of the night where I am.  (I do have to excuse the non-North Americans because it may be early morning or even noon in England and afternoon in Australia when it's night here.)

I rarely have a problem with insomnia.  When I do I just lay there and toss and turn.  Then I worry about being awake for work, so that makes it worse.  Boy am I glad it doesn't happen often.

Yup,
Me too! I can usually fall asleep. It's the staying asleep that I have trouble with. Then the kids are up at about 6:30 so no chance to catch up.  ::) Love my coffee though.  ;D

You really have a problem with people posting here overnight don't ya?

I can't say I have ever jumped up in the middle of the night to check the board either!

Guilty! When I was at my friend Karla's in Rosamond a couple of months ago, and couldn't sleep on her lumpy couch, I got up at 4 a.m. and went to the board....  :-[

The experts say that if you're not sleepy you must stay away from the bedroom or sleeping area until you do become sleepy.

If you have already gone to bed, but find yourself unable to fall asleep and/or feel restless, they say you should get out of bed (and bedroom) and find something relaxing to do and return when you're sleepy.

The logic behind this idea is that your body and mind begin a process of registering the bedroom and bed as strictly a sleep environment, to the point where eventually falling asleep becomes easier.

For me that means no more reading or watching TV in bed. Thus, I end-up checking into the boards.

This method has helped me significantly. I'm not as much of an insomniac as I used to be. I have my moments but not many.

I have problems sleeping, too, sometimes.  I've been told I shouldn't drink anything with caffeine in it within four hours of going to bed, but I drink so much coffee and soda that if I stop suddenly I get a migraine.

When the insomnia is really bad, I cut back gradually on the coffee and soda.  It never works, but if I have to take things to the doctor, I can honestly say that I know it's not the caffeine keeping me awake.

I keep a couple of boring books in my room, next to my bed.  That's usually the first thing I try.  I've never tried the "warm milk" bit, only because I can't stand the thought of the film on my teeth afterwards.

I think a lot of doctors tell you to try the "warm milk and counting sheep" stuff because of the big deal made over people getting addicted to sleeping pills.  If doctors paid more attention to the causes of insomnia, (and trying to cure the cause) there would fewer people getting addicted.

My causes are strees and/or mild depression.  My longest bout with insomnia was after I kicked my abusive ex out of the house.  With all the threats he made to hurt me or our daughter, I couldn't sleep. I was stressed out thinking he would break in one night while I was alseep. Once I moved to another town, (secretly, he doesn't know where we are) the insomnia was gone.

I had a sleep apnia sp?) thing going and after about 6 months of not staying asleep for more than an hour I went to the Dr.  He said either we can give you some pills and hook you up to an expensive machine or you can lose a few lbs, quit drinking coffee, don't drink much alcohol, and no tobacco.
Giving up coffee was the biggest problem, living in Seattle you can't swing a dead salmon with out hitting a coffee house.  It took me 6 months to ween off but I only awaken once a night, cut down signifigantly on bathroom runs too.  I miss those lattes and grande cups of Sumatra or Sulawesi but it's worth a nights sleep to do without.

No coffee? I couldn't do it. The only time I haven't been a coffee drinker (and it started in my "sippy" cup at about age 3) was when I was pregnant.
How about decaf Race? I've been to Seattle once and the coffee options almost kept me there. ;D

Trust me when I say that everyone who knows me was surprised when I said I was going to quit and amazed when I did.  I didn't do it cold turkey, I would get terrible headaches if I didn't have caffine in me by 0930.  I cut it down to 2 cups in the morning, then 1, then none.  It took awhile, decaffinated isn't really needed, truth is after I stopped I lost the taste for it.  Now a good latte or mocha is different, I sometimes treat myself on the weekends.
Oh yeah, cutting coffee saves me about $50 a month now.

There ain't nothing like the headache you get day one of caffeine freedom.  I tried the decaf thing but it brought me back to the regular, so I don't drink coffee anymore either.

I only need 5 or 6 hours sleep per night and it's useless trying to go to bed early.  When I have a problem getting to sleep, I play the guitar for a while.  That does the trick.
