Subject: For those of you with children!

Written By: Gabble_Ratchet on 10/21/02 at 03:51 a.m.

TO MY CHILD

This morning, I am going to smile when I see your face
And laugh when I feel like crying.

This morning, I will let you choose what you want to wear,
And smile and say how perfect it is.

This morning, I am going to step over the laundry
Pick you up and take you to the park to play.

This morning, I will leave the dishes in the sink,
And let you teach me how to put that puzzle of yours together.

This afternoon, I will unplug the telephone, keep the computer off,
And sit with you in the backyard and blow bubbles.

This afternoon, I will not yell once, not even a tiny grumble
When you scream and whine for the ice cream truck,
And I will buy you one if he comes by.

This afternoon, I won't worry about what you are going to be when you grow up, or second guess every decision I have made where you are concerned.

This afternoon, I will let you help me bake cakes,
And I won't stand over you trying to fix them.

This afternoon, I will take us to McDonald's
And buy us both a Happy Meal so you can have both toys.

This evening, I will hold you in my arms and tell you a story
About how you were born and how much I love you.

This evening, I will let you splash in the tub and not get angry
About the puddles on the bathroom floor

This evening, I will let you stay up late
While we sit on the porch and count all the stars.

This evening, I will snuggle beside you for hours,
And miss my favourite TV shows.

This evening, when I run my fingers through your hair as we sit together,
I will simply be grateful that God has given me the greatest gift ever given.

This evening, I will think about the mothers and fathers who are
searching for their missing children,

The mothers and fathers who are visiting their
Children’s graves instead of their bedrooms.

The mothers and fathers who are in hospital rooms
Watching their children suffer senselessly, and screaming inside that they
can't handle it anymore.

And when I kiss you goodnight I will hold you a little
Tighter, a little longer.

It is then, that I will thank God for you, and ask him
For nothing, except one more day.............

Thanks Gabble! That is a very touching poem. Those of us who have children sometimes forget what precious gifts they really are!!

Hi Goldie,

Thanks for your response.

The poem itself was sent to me this morning by a good friend of mine. His 7 year old son was killed in a car accident  recently, so he has asked me, along with others, to pass it on!

Hey Gabble.

Your friend is in my prayers.  I can't imaging losing my child.  :'(

The poem is beautiful.  It is so true except for the fact that I usually do let my daughter dress herself.  It can be funny at times (like when she wore the purple shorts with the lime green shirt).  Thank you for passing it on.

Hi Dagwood,

Thanks for your kind words. As you can imagine, my friend and his wife are inconsolable. I want to hug them both and tell them it will be alright, but no words of mine could be enough!

My outlook on life has now changed completely because of it!

Gabble, that's a beautiful poem.  I'm so sorry to hear of your friend's loss.  They are in my prayers. It's sad circumstances like that that make us remember just how much our children mean to us.

When I get frustrated I usually call up my mom and yell at her (instead of yelling at my kid). She asks me how things are going, and if I start up the conversation with a comment on how I feel like duct-taping the kid to the nearest wall, she knows to pull up a chair, and remind me of all the rotten things I did to her. Pretty soon I'm laughing (and a lot calmer).

I am SO sorry for all of you.  Unfortunately, I have first-hand experience with this searing, seemingly never-ending pain.  You are in my thoughts and my prayers :'(

Oh Gabble,
Your poor friend. I just can't imagine. It's a great poem. It's so easy to forget to overlook the little inconveniences our children bring and remember how amazing they are. Your friend and his wife are in my thoughts.

My sympathies. You're being supportive, a good friend. That is indubitably a great help to them in this time of sorrow.

Nice sentiment, Gabble_Ratchet.  I will be sure to hold my three-month-old a little tighter when I get home from work this evening.

Great poem Gabby. My 2 boys are past the age of giving baths and blowing bubbles but their still precious gifts from God. Sometimes we need to be reminded of that. Thanks, man, for doing just that.
