Obviously there was lots of cars and people damaged and that is bad....

Having said that you have to love the statement by the Police spokesman :

Thick fog may have been a factor in the accident, California Highway Patrol officers said.

Yeah that's good work, boys....take a look at the photo !

So would the speed of all the other cars involved.  C'Mon, this is the freeway.  Nobody is traveling slower than 55 Miles per hour, and many would be driving way faster than that.  If there is an accident ahead of you, at that speed it is D**mn near impossible to safely come to a full stop.  Even steering out of the way is pretty sketchy.

It will be days before anyone is able to determine the actual cause of accident.  In the meantime all we can do is pray for the speedy recovery of the victims...

Knowing what it's like to drive on CA freeways in the fog, I'd wager the accident was caused by someone driving slow to avoid an accident and then getting slammed from behind by people were driving as though they could see fine...
