Subject: Opinions on Games, let's try again..

Written By: ChuckyG on 11/08/02 at 10:25 a.m.

Things got a little out of hand earlier.. I think people got a little confused, so I'm going to try this again..

A couple of people have mentioned to Hairspray and myself, that it seems like the same games are always being played on the Games board.

In the interest of preventing the games board from getting too monotonous, should we try limiting games from being restarted more than X times (with X being a variable number, like 10 or something)..

This was brought up by people who play the games, and are concerned there isn't enough variety on the board. I just want to make sure everyone feels like there's an equal opportunity for new games to get a chance.

I'm not planning on shutting the board down. It was made a seperate board to prevent these types of threads from overwhelming the rest of the site. I asked the question here, because this board is where system-wide subjects are generally asked.. I would hope people who read the games board read this board as well. Also, some people who play the games may have stopped playing because of the above reason, and might have not had a chance to see this thread otherwise. A lot of people choose to remain silent when there's a problem, because they don't know wether there are other people who have the same problem.

Please try and respond by stating something along the lines of:

1) There's enough variety already.
2) I think the same games are getting tired.

if you think people are going to ridicule you for your opinion or something, let me or Hairspray know in a private message..

Maybe we could combine some of the games into one.  For instance, the "I Have", "I  Need", "I Love" could be rolled into just one place...say "Emotions" or "Feelings Today".  Maybe we should vote for particular topics to stay and go by that.  I personally like "The Person Above Me" thread.  It let's people keep up to date with others...but maybe it could be altered so that people (Including myself) don't eat up pages at a time speaking to one person.  I am guilty of this and have become aware of it.  When me and the person I'm talking to realize that we're going on & on...we simply start using PM's to communicate....or IM. As for the chain games...Sports, Music, Celibrity, Movie...ect, I believe those CAN wear out, I mean, how many times can you say Reggie Jackson, Nellie, Liza Minelli and Red Dawn....they, IMHO, are the true monotonous ones.  As for ones I think can stay fresh: Gossip chain, Redux-Redux and the Music Story (Yes I have a personal liking for that one) can always make one think up new things...for creativity purposes.  That's MY 2 cents....now I'm broke again :-/

Right now I think we have about a page and a half of variety, but I always always welcome new games when they come along. I think the emotive ones (I have, I love etc.) are important because it gives people a chance to express their moods and feeling at a particular time (As does "person above me"). The chain games can be quite dull, but even within those, there is room for playfulness if one uses their imagination.

I do believe now however, that the post counts in the games should not count, since it is unfair to those who avoid the games in preference to the weightier issues on other boards.

I'm a little gun-shy right now, but I'll say 2).  But that doesn't mean you have to change anything.  I swear.   :'(

I will agree with that...I've only been hanging around for a couple weeks but I think all the chain games are running out of possible entries...so we're just going to have to be more creative...

I will also go with #2 here.

Oh. To simplify it, I say 1.

But I always welcome new games. And I do try to be creative within the old ones...

I also say, #2.

I would say #2 myself, but what the heck!  The problem with the chain games is that very few things end with "J" while a lot of things begin with "J."  For example, on the music chain games, if someone puts in a name that ends in "L" and I catch the next entry in the chain, I enter "LL Cool J."  On celebrity and sports threads, if someone throws me a name that ends in "V," I submit "Vijay Amritraj," an Indian tennis player who also had a bit part in the James Bond movie "Octop u s s y."  And I found five towns on earth that end in "J":  Cluj, Blaj, Dej, and Lugoj, all in Romania; and Venraij in the Netherlands.

I should be responsible for the city chain game being restarted because the original city chain game began (and the thread was locked) during my absence from July 28 to August 4; the original A-B-C game, which had stalled but I tried to jump-start it twice (and I did not want it restarted) and the country A-B-C game, which did not get restarted after the original thread was locked, because you just can't go far on that!

I wanted to start absolutely new games myself, but I decided against it.

Edited to add:

Now don't get me wrong.  I love the games board.  But the chain games can be nerve-wracking and I would like to see them ended after so many go-rounds.  I'm glad no one has decided to start "Music Chain Game #11."  You see, on these "Chain Game" threads, in order to stop repeating yourself, you have to resort to reference books!  But some threads, like "I Love," "I Need," "I Want," "I Have," "I've Never," etc., and "The Person Above Me" threads never seem to grow old, so I'd love to keep them going forever and ever.  I'm not voting to kill the games board; I'm voting to stop the chain games before they get repetitive and boring!  I love the games board!  Please don't kill it!

#2 too.

But, a caveat.  The games don't appeal to me in the first place, so I start out with a jaded attitude.

Since I play the games and enjoy MOST of them I will pick #1.  Read my first message and pull more in detail out of this. It's starting to sound like we're in Dade County.

Does that mean we can't talk about you turning me back into a fjordland-crested penguin...?  I was much happier then... ;)

If I came across as snobbish to those that want to limit the games, I am sorry. I think we all are grown up enough to make our own decisions, and I was not trying to sway the public. As for the previous thread, Hairspray has every right to edit or delete offensive posts. Locking up the thread will only keep these thoughts on the board and spread more controversy. But the choice has been made. :(

I haven't visited the games board itself since it has been created, but only for lack of time.  Before that, I thought some of the chain games were getting old.

I do/did like the "I have", "I need", "I want" ect. types of games, because I see them as a way of getting to know the other people here.

I never took a stab at the "create a story using only..." types of games, but I enjoyed reading them, and probably will at some time or another give it a try.

I hope this doesn't sound too wishy-washy, but I'd say only limit the "chain-games", as they are the only ones I found to be dull and repetitive.

It's usually Charlie Brown that is wishy-washy, not <

However, either 1) or 2)....

I think some of them are a bit tired, but then again some people don't seem to mind

FB  :)

Addendum - now I've had a chance to think about it some more :

# 1 thanks.

I wish you would please stop making these kinds of statements and false assumptions about what goes on with threads and posts.

Firstly, none of this is an issue, especially for this particular thread. ChuckyG made that very clear.

Secondly, it forces me to deviate the thread momentarily to make clarifications.

Thirdly, I did not modify or delete anyone's posts from the heated thread. If I had done so, it still should not be an issue. People know the guidelines by now. No need for explanations.

Lastly, the locking of threads is not open for discussion.

IG,

If you have further points to discuss, instant message.

This thread will be placed right back on track with the ORIGINAL issue at hand.

P.S.

I am being matter-of-fact. Nothing more, nothing less.

We need to stay on topic with this.

Thank you.  :)

Hey!!! I started a new game in the game board area and it's pretty close to being on page two...  it's getting overwhelmed by postings on the I Needs and I Have To threads.  That's frustrating.  If I start a new game again I'm going to do it somewhere other than the board game section.

But Steve! I have played your game twice already tonight! :D

Right now it is in space five of page one! ;)
