Subject: Why does Yahoo think I need 50 icons?

Written By: ChuckyG on 11/08/02 at 02:18 p.m.

I just upgraded my yahoo IM.. which I primarily use for talking to my mother when I'm at work.. and in the process they added 3 bookmarks, a bookmark folder with hundreds of links (that people were clearly stupid enough to pay for), a toolbar I didn't ask for (and also had to remove), a mail client I have no use for, shortcuts on my desktop for the mail client, and in my start menu, plus the quick launch area in my taskbar, and the main start menu spot (at the top of the start menu), and even prompted to change my homepage to their site for me..

it took me longer to restore my machine after an upgrade, than it did to install their update.. which is buggy and looks worse than the older version (that they were constantly bugging me to upgrade, complete with javascript errors)..

I wouldn't mind so much, but they're not the only company that pulls this crap with their software.. Microsoft really needs to spend some effort to prevent 3rd party people from placing things wherever they feel like it..

With my 133-mghz pentium 1 I've avoided upgrading, although I keep getting the 'do you want to upgrade' question every time I log on.

I kind of like the Yahoo! menubar, though.  Makes it easy to get to bookmarks and My Yahoo!.  The old Yahoo! menubar, I hasten to add...

Ever since I upgraded to the newest version I have trouble just starting up.  Yahoo has always been buggy but the newest version is the worse.  You would think that an upgrade would make this better.   ::)   There is an option when you install Yahoo to either install only Yahoo Messenger or install the Yahoo Experience.  Which I think installs all the other add on.

Cool Steve!  I also have the dreaded 133mhz pentium....It won't let me install Windows ME because the processer must be at least 150mghz >:( I can't WAIT to buy a new computer but in the meantime, I had a friend install 2 more hard drives (6 gigs each) for more storage space and more virtual memory, which makes this thing run just a tad faster.  As for yahoo, I have kept the older version.

That explains why my browser crashes every time I try to run Messenger.  My modem is a bit sketchy, and I'm holding off getting a new one till I get working again, at which time I'll upgrade to one of the cable/broadband options.  If I sign up through my current cable tv provider, I'll get about 1/3 off the price of internet-access-only.

That being said, does anyone know how to DOWNGRADE to the older version of Yahoo Messenger?  I'm such a putz at computers compared to some of you guys. :-

You 133mghz too?   ;D  There are so few of us left.  The industry doesn't have much use for us... although we'd probably be on the top of the musicians on-screen call list if they ever decide to remake Deliverance

Actually, there is a site that has older Versions of different programs which is simply called OldVersion.com.  I do know that they have Yahoo there.

Here is the link:  http://www.oldversion.com/program.php?n=yahoo

Hope that helps.   :)

I really like the e-motions also.  My main complaint is that it is a very unstable version.  I hope they come up with a patch or another upgrade.   :-/

Are you trying to screw with my head?  Are you serious?  Or are you really just new to the 'net?  I'm really gullible, so I can be sucked in pretty easily.  So here goes:

ICQ - I Seek You
Instant Messaging Program, one of the originals.  Get it at www.icq.com  Uses a UIN, Unique Identification Number for each user, instead of each user having to create a unique User Name.  So, anyone can have any user name they want, even if it matches anothers, because the system sends and receives messages based on the UIN, not the name.  Also features the typical file transfer ability, chat, etc etc etc.  I like it MUCH better than AIM, Yahoo, MSN or any other, and primarily use it above all others.

It's been around longer than those others as well.  In fact, you can tell how long some members have been using ICQ by thier UIN.  ICQ UIN's now are at least 9-10 digits long.  Mine is only 7 digits long, and I signed up YEARS ago, like around '97 I think.  A low number, like 6 or 7 digits used to be like a sign of prestige.  I remmebr seeing some people selling their UIN's on eBay, at a pretty good price because people wanted a low number.  Kinda like faking how long they'd been on the ICQ bandwagon.

So, what are you waiting for?  GO GET IT!

And then add me.  ICQ UIN 8497773

The last generation of Yahoo Messenger had going for it a few cool IM environments (I esp liked the kick boxers), but for some reason it kicked people off at odd times, too.  The voice messenging has problems as well... one person can't talk when the other person is talking.  At least it couldn't with the person I used it with.

MSN has a more dependable instant messenger, but you can't leave off-line messages.  The voice messenging worked much better.  All things considered, I'd take MSN over Yahoo.
