Subject: Height

Written By: Steve_H_2002 on 11/09/02 at 10:52 a.m.

Are you happy with your height?

I can understand men being height conscious because of sports and just the idea of big being better, but are woman as height conscious?  It seems that women under 5'3" or so think they're too short, which I guess I don't understand.

I'm somewhere between 5'2" and 5'3" and it used to bother me a lot because I wanted to be taller.  But somewhere along the line I decided that being short has advantages (no one asks you to pass them things from a high shelf, more places to hide from deranged psychopaths, etc.)

Absolutely NOT! I'm only 5'1 and I have a heck of a time buying pants , jeans, dresses, everything. I'm of average build but I can never seem to find anything that is the right length for me. Usually things that are the right length are often too tight in the waist so I have to go a size up where everything is too long..but seeing I prefer flared pants, hemming them isn't an option so I find myself buying ridiculously high shoes!

I'm 6'2" and happy.

The woman here, just like in real life, seem to be more discontented with their height than the males.  Nobody's said they're too tall, though.  I've always thought a woman over 6' and a man over 6'5" is too tall.  Even at my height, I had to curl up like a fetus in compact cars...

Subject: Re: Height

Written By: XenaKat13 on 11/10/02 at 03:46 p.m.

I'm exactly five feet tall in sock feet if I stand up really straight and think tall thoughts.

I'm happy with my height, but I'm not happy with the way some others perceive height.  As someone else mentioned, it makes clothes buying a bit of an annoyance, but for me that annoyance only lasts about three to five minutes per year.

When I was in my early twenties, it would drive me crazy when men taller than 5'11" would not give me the time of day because I was too short for them.

Now, if a guy is that shallow to judge me on my height alone, without getting to know me, he can go jump in a bottomless pit.  He don't know what he's missing!!!

I wonder if you could accompany this jumping into a bottomless pit with that sound effect from Super Mario when Mario dies :)  That would be fun.

My friends and I sort of had a debate about height once.  I personally do not place too much attention on height...I'm 5'8" and have dated girls from 5' to 6'2" and I never thought there was a problem.  I think short girls are cute, and tall girls are elegant (because they're so "long" I guess).  My friend believes that the "perfect" height for a girl, however, is such that her chin can rest comfortably on his chest when both are standing upright.  I guess he follows the so-called hockey-stick rule :)  To each their own!

With the possible exceptions of horseracing jockeys and basketball players, I don't believe a person's height is a help or hinderance to employment the way it was years ago.

My dad wanted very badly to be a police officer. He passed all the civil service tests, psychological exams, everything that was thrown at him.  When it came time for the physical exam, he was deemed to be in "good overall health", but was rejected anyway.  The reason?  Back in those days you had to be a minimum of 5'6" to get on the force.  Dad was 5' 5 3/4".

This was long before civil rights and political correctness.  It may help to explain why there were so few female officers back in the day.

I think that height restriction was a safety measure more than blatant discrimination.  It's very easy to disrespect a smaller police officer than someone, say, 5'10"...case in point: Randy Moss and the meter maid.  I think in this case, unless your dad was Supercop, a height restriction is justified.  But that's just my opinion, I could be wrong.

Very good point all around, XenaKat!  What a shame that they had those silly restrictions back then!  I'm sure your dad would have made a wonderful police officer. ;)

I remember when you had to be a certain height to be a flight attendant.  I forget what the height was, but I think it was changed not too long ago because a friend of mine became a stewardess and she wasn't very tall!

For the SuperCop theory, it is possible the officer's safety was the main reason.  Nowadays, though, at least in my area, it doesn't seem that shorter officers are at any more or less risk than the taller ones.

Sometimes a shorter or female officer (or one who is both short and female), can be less intimidating to a victim of a violent crime.

When my now-ex attacked me and our daughter, the first officer on the scene was a big, burly football player type over six foot tall.  I was so frightened at the time I could not make much sense.  After not getting much sense out of me, he sent the other officer over to talk to me.  He was a much shorter man, and though  I was still frightened and upset, I could tell this man exactly what happened partly because I could look him in the eye, instead of having to look up at him.

As for the height requirement for stewardesses, wasn't that part of an artificial beauty ideal?

Someone posted about having a hard time buying small.  Well, try buying big!

I am just about "too tall" for most stores, apparently.  Consider 1st of all, that there isn't any dept store that has an "Amazon" section (insert whatever PC name you want to use).  There is always a "Petite" section.  2nd, there are few places that, mingled in w/"regular" stuff, sell clothes made extra long.  (Used to go to Macy's for that, but I think they stopped bothering recently.)  Meanwhile, there are "big and/or tall men" places you can go to as a man.  But I guess we women aren't supposed to be big.  See what I mean?  It even makes 1 feel like an alien.   ::)

I have the opposite problem of the other poster, but basically the same.  I am tall and thin (well, pretty much).  Manufacturers seem to assume that the taller you are, the wider you are.  Reverse for the shorter - they get skinnier.  So, I prefer a 14 length, but like a 10 or 12 on width.  Unless I get 1 of those precious few places that sells "Tall" versions of their regular.

So, I frequently end up walking around in designer High Waters and Capri Shirts!    :-[

Perhaps you can start a petition to clothing designers to make clothes for taller women?  Or my gay/transgender friends always seem to find a dress in their sizes, and they're not exactly "small" :)  You might be able to get advice from them :)
