Subject: Radio Stations that Changed thier Formats

Written By: Screwball54 on 11/27/02 at 11:38 p.m.

Anyone else have a radio station they really liked, but changed to a worse format?  Mine was 96.5 "The Peak" in Denver. They were an 80's- 90's alternative station (Joe Jackson, Del Amitri, Big Head todd, ect.). I went back to denver to see my folks and they had changed to "The New Rock" from then on all they played was Korn, metalica, and limp bisket. Definately a waste of a once good radio station.

Yup!  We had KKYK 103.7 for YEARS that was just rock.....and then a few years ago they changed it to hard core alternative...and now it is talk radio....what a waste!!!!

Thanks Clear Channel!!!!!! >:( >:(

Not necessarily a worse format at all, but both my regional stations, 103.1 and 1017, have changed their formats.

103.1 used to play a lot of music from the "80s, 90s and today", with a good shaking of music like, to take examples that I like from each, Duran Duran, Bryan Adams and Anastacia (exempli gratiae only). Now, their playlist consists of the new Nickleback single (I think it's called Too Bad, or something like that), Shakira's Suerte/WW, Underneath Your Clothes (a song which, granted, for me, gets better every listen), and other such stuff that can easily be replayed within 6 hours. Sometimes that does annoy me.

Yes! We have 99.3 the Fox...their motto used to be "The Fox Rocks!"...they played ALL the best music...then they changed their format to compete with new station 104.9 XFM who play new alternative...so now my motto is "The Fox SUCKS"!

Yup!

In fact, my station was also 96.5  "The Point"
They started out as an all 80's station.  Duran Duran, Wham!, all the "great ones".  They even had a hair band Friday--it was the best...anyway I turned the Point on one day, and MUCH to my dismay, who was on there?  Sheryl Crow.  :'(  When the station identification came on, it said "96.5 the Point..the greatest hits of the 80's, 90's and more"   ::)  I about cried!  :-[

Needless to say, my cd player started getting way more action!  :D

The one format I miss the most in Charleston, WV, is alternative/modern rock.  We had a station that ran from November 1997 to September 1998 called "The Planet@98.7" that played that kind of music, and I was hooked.  Then the station inexplicably went away, and there has been no source of that music ever since.  About six months ago, the local jammin' oldies station switched to what I thought was an all-1980's format, but when I listened, they played not only the 1980's, but 1970's, 1990's, and current music as well, although 1980's music is in the heaviest rotation on the station.

It must be a Clear Channel thing to suck you in then change the format.  We have a station here (KISN 97.1) that was all 80's.  Slowly some 90's started to slip in.  Now they say best of the 80's 90's and NOW!  What that means is 1 80's song per hour. >:(

Except for the 4 or 5 commercially succesful stations here in Boston, format changes are common.  Every time the seasons change, one or more radio stations changes format.

One in particular, 93.7 was calling itself "The Eagle" and played classic rock about 7 years ago.  Unfortunately there were three other, better known classic rock stations in town, and they folded.  Not long after they changed format to something else, I'm not sure what.  At one point they were playing country-western, at another it was rap and hip-hop.

For the last two and a half years, they have been playing what can best be described at "dance hits" or "club hits".  They will play stuff from the 70's to now, but only stuff you can dance to.  There will be no Led Zeppelin or Aerosmith, but there will be Amii Stewart, Prince, Cher, and unfortunately a whole lot of those cookie-cutter boy bands.

I do like their morning show, and the stuff where they broadcast "live" from one of the local nightclubs on the weekends.

Talk about audio whiplash, though, as I'm typing this, they were playing Jermaine Stewart's "We Don't Have To Take Our Clothes Off", and when that ended they went right into Eminem's new one (I forget the name of it, it's from the movie soundtrack). :o :o :o :o

AAAAUUUUGGGGGHHHHH!!!!!!

Well, until recently Charleston, WV had a station called "Mix 94.5" which, although it wasn't an entirely 1980's station, had songs from the 1980's in heavy rotation.  It has been replaced with "Z-Rock," which calls itself "new rock."  If this station plays alternative/modern rock, I would listen, but I still haven't given it a good opinion yet, as I miss the alternative/modern rock format; but I also want a station that plays all 1980's music…

KUKQ 1060 AM In Phoenix in the early 90s played great music. A lot of underground stuff and "alternative music" before some genius in the 90s labeled everything as alternative.  For the past few years 1060 is now an "all sports" station.  Now don't get me wrong, I love sports as much if not more than most people, but Phoenix now has 3 of these sports stations.  Meanwhile, on FM the same 8 or 9 songs are played hour after hour.  Thanks Clear Channel!

yes!  my beautiful rock station, 94.1 died.  it used to play a lot of stuff that i liked, and suddenly it reverted to the harold stern network or something.  the music they played i didn't like, so i don't listen to it any more.

luckily, i've found a new station, 100.3 that i actually like!  i listen to it a lot in the car even though my mom doesn't like it cuz she thinks a lot of it is "too violent." (okay, so that one song by saliva was violent...)  the only problem is that it comes out of philadelphia and won't come in the house, only in the car.  and even then it's really fuzzy a lot of the time.  so i mostly just listen to tapes in the car.  (cd players in cars is unheard of in my family. :D )

as for when i'm not in the car, i never listen to the radio, so i don't have any problems.

although, a lot of stations lie to us.  this one station promises "ten songs in a row, commercial" constantly...it's usually about four songs.  lmao.  the closest they've come was seven songs, at 01:00...which was then interupted by a trojan commercial. ::)

I remember KUKQ!  I went to QFest in '91.  Saw (among many others) Material Issue, Stan Ridgeway, and Front 242.  Awesome!  :D

Yeah, Clear Channel bites the big one.  They force crap down people's throats.  >:(

See guys, this is the EXACT reason I created Renegade Retro.  I got tired of trying to find music on the radio that DIDN'T suck.  Hell, I even got my employers to start broadcasting my station during the day instead of Mix105.1.  Couldn't stand the 1 80's song per hour, mixed with Pink, Creed, et al...

I found this link yesterday, it's dedicated to KUKQ, the audio didn't work, but it had some other cool stuff on there.  It was like a trip down memory lane.

Schweet!  :D  Wow!  I wish I had known about Q-Fest '90!  What a lineup!  They used to play LaTour quite a bit more than the FM stations, which was kinda ironic since the guy used to DJ at KZZP...

We have a local station, used to be cool 80s and now describes itself as "All Hit Radio-Your favorites of the 60s through today." What they leave out is the only "hits" are the one hit wonders. The daytime dj is insane. No joke. He apparently gets hooked on one song and it is played at least every hour throughout the day. Last summer it was Pilot of the Airwaves.. ::) Never want to hear that song ever ever again. Before that he got on a tear with "Running Bear", which I don't even consider to be rock. This fall and winter it was Never Been To me by Charlene? and Black Velvet, by whoever sang that song. If there is ever something good, it is a rarity. Right now, Linger by the Cranberries is playing. "DO you have to do you have to do you have to play that radio station? ";D

Unfortunately it is the only station we can get in our building, so everyone plays it (we aren't allowed to listen to radio stations on our computer, or believe me, Renegade Retro would be playing).

Shaz, could you listen with headphones?  Probably not, but it's a thought.

It seems that all the stations around here, when they change formats, it's to Spanish music.  I'm not talking salsa, but the oompa-doompa stuff.  We have had a couple of new stations come up, though, that are pretty good.  One has "Retro 80's at 8" (p.m.) that is pretty good.  I don't usually listen to the radio, though, so they could be changing and I just don't know it 8)

We had one here KHRO  Hero Radio 94.7.  When I found them they played some pretty good alternative stuff with a little of the newer stuff thrown in every now and then.  But all of sudden, they changed to "everything that's now".  It really and truly is awful.  But I did find another that plays 60's, 70's and 80's and it's the good stuff too.

My <old> favorite radio station used to play all the good stuff, like Billy Joel, Elton John, Kansas, Joe Jackson, etc... now, I swear, there are like, 5 songs on their playlist-- "I'm With You", "Complicated", and "Sk8er Boi" by Avril Lavigne; "What I Am" by Edie Brickell and the New Bohemians (I HATE this song!); and "One Last Breath" by Creed, which has become deathly annoying over the past several months.  They got rid of all their 70s music (except that annoying song "Maggie May" by Rod Stewart and a few others) and most of the 80s music they play sucks, or else they are just too overplayed.  I swear, they recycle the same songs they played a day ago the next day, except in a different order!   >:(  >:(
