Subject: Daylight Savings Time

Written By: Race_Bannon on 12/03/02 at 07:15 p.m.

I was reminded if this stupid ritual in a games thread, Indiana and Arizona don't participate in it but the rest of the U.S does.  Tell me, we have some folks from other parts of the world here, do you do it?  What does everyone think of it?
If were going to be changing time, why can't we have our own peronal time zones?  Makes much more sense to me, hell my 8:00 am can be Rice's 10:00 am and maybe Ghetto John likes to start his day a little earlier so when I'm eating lunch he may be hitting the snooze button at 0600.
I can say one thing for sure it PI$$es me OFF! >:(

Hi Race

I can answer this !  I'm in another part of the world !

Australia had Daylight Saving time, all except Queensland, where I live !

It creates big problems, especially with the other states.  To fly to a meeting in Sydney/Canberra/Melbourne for example, requires someone in Brisbane (Qld) to get up at about 4.00 just to be there on time.

Also on the Queensland/New South Wales border you have the ridiculous situation where shops on on side of the street are closed whilst others are open and vice-versa - as that region depends heavily on tourism (the Gold Coast) is is understandably a concern for them.

All in all, I think it is something that we should all do, or not do at all (as a country that is).

Speaking indiviidually, nearly everyone in USA being back one more hour has made it one hour more difficult for me on the board !  I have to be there till at least 11.00pm my time before anyone shows up !  :(

I do hate losing that one hour of sleep...but then six months later, I get it right back ;D

I think the whole thing was started as an energy conservation thing.  We were supposed to change our clocks in order to take advantage of all the natural sunlight out there in summer time to light our homes and offices, instead of burning electricity.

But that was back in the days before home computers, fax machines, portable telephones (not cell phones) battery rechargers for the cell phones, printers, copiers, microwave ovens, and in fact just about every modern "convenience".

So, we aren't saving that much electricity at all, any more.  It's become habit.

The part I hate most, about it is the people who work the overnight shift (nurses, security guards, police, convenience store clerks, ect.) actually lose an hour's pay when the clocks get turned forwards.  Sure, they get it back six months later when the clocks get turned back, but what if they are no longer working the night shift then?  It's a cheat!!!!

Actually, wouldn't working the night shift during the changeover rock?  Think about it:  You punch in at 11, you're hard at work, and 2 'o clock hits and suddenly BOOM, it's now 3 'o clock!  You just worked a whole hour in a second!  You punch out at 7 'oclock like usual, and according to the time clock, you worked 8 hours, but you ACTUALLY only worked 7!  I like the thought of that...

Yeah, from a *working* point of view, it's great.  ;)

I was thinking more of the *working for not much more than minimum wage, boy is my paycheck gonna s@@k this week* angle. But only because I've been there...

That may be true but it really sucks on the night that you gain that hour back and you work 13 hours instead of 12!!!  :(

I'm thinking paycheck POV as well.  All jobs I ever worked at paid you by the hour, and go by the time clock, not minutes worked.  So, they count the hour between 2 and 3, whether it was actually there or not, and we got paid for it.  So, we only worked 7 hours but got paid for 8.  And come fall, when you set them BACK an hour, adding an hour, you had to leave a note on your time card indicating you worked an extra hour.

Yes, that meant they GAVE you an extra hour in Spring, but I guess I've always considered it a perk for working the overnight shifts.  I've never been at a company that DIDN'T do this.

We do not observe daylight savings time where I live, either.  It's confusing enough trying to figure out the time difference with the rest of the U.S. without having to take into consideration that extra hour more (or less). ::)

I agree with Fuss...I think either everyone should observe it or else don't even have it at all.

Thanks for the replys, I got curious about it and thought maybe it was from our agricultural days and helped with harvest but found out that it was for conserving energy.  It is useless at this point and should be ceased.  I've done the working hourly nightshift and they always compensated for that hour lost or gained but it still sucks to be there 9 hours when it's an 8 hour shift and if your a person who needs every cent than to only get 7 in sucks too.  Time to put it to an end, daylight at 7am in not much differnet than daylight at 8am.

Since I live in Arizona, I can tell you it is pretty weird how everyone else changes time and we don't.  The way I've always looked at it was on Sundays halfway through the season instead of the NFL games being played at 10am and 1pm(AZ time), they're played at 11am and 2pm.

I just wish it could become the Spring Ahead time and they would LEAVE IT!

Parts of Indiana do observe Daylight Savings.  In my part-o-the-State,(NW Indiana) we are so close to Chicago that we are considered part of their suburbs. Therefore, it is prudent for us to be on the same Central time. As is my life isn't goofy enough, we have to do this, but if I want to talk to my freinds in South Bend, (about 50 mi away) I have to remember that they are on Eastern.  I confuse easily, so hilarity ensues.  Then the dorks that be decided one year to not turn back the clocks in the fall, and I was going to school in total darkness.  Duh!
More than you probably wanted to know, but there you are!  ::)

Western Australia doesn't have daylight savings time either.

I don't have a pro or con on the DST controversy. All that not observing it means is that cable channels air one hour earlier in the summer, and 1 hour later in October.

I know it really does only affect me as far as when tv programs or games are on, but then again I live in the Mountain Time Zone and we're always sleighted.  For example, a show will be on a 8 Eastern/7 Central or 8 Eastern/5 Pacific. Anyone else here in the Mountain Time Zone feel my pain? Phoenix? Denver? Boise? Helena?

BTW, sorry to get off topic!

I know they observe it in Greece. Personally, I never understood why it is done. People are either an hour late one time a year, and an hour early another time. I finally got the concept of "spring forward, fall back" but I still get very confused. Do we lose an hour here or gain? I never know. I think it was invented just to confuse people.
