Subject: Favourite Artists - And The One Song...

Written By: Criz on 12/09/02 at 12:11 a.m.

...you need to listen to get a taster, or listen to beacuse it's just plain fantastic!

Basically - all you have to do is name your ten favourite artists, from any era. Then you name the one song whcih you think everyone should here beacuse a) its just great or b) beacuse it really gives u a flavour of the band 9 if you dont know who they are or what their style is!). You can also justify your choice if you wish :) Here goes:

1) The Smiths - This Charming Man (It's one of my favs, although I regularly change my mind. Its also one of their singles and really does give you a taster of the style :))

2) The Clash - London Calling (Probably one of their most famous tracks, it gives more of an inslight into the 'punkier' style of their music from back in 1979)

3) The Jam - Going Underground (This is just a tune and has to be heard!)

4) The Police - Every Breath You Take (Although not my favourite, this track is seminal for the band - and its still pretty damn good!)

5) The Bluetones - Slight Return (Their biggest hit in Engalnd and consequently my favourite, even though I love all of their singles and most album tracks.)

6) Madonna - La Isla Bonita (Just beacuse its my fav of her 80s hits at the mo, last week it was 'Borderline' though!

7) The Go Gos - Vacation (Gives a taste of some of the 'poppier', more commerical work - but nonetheless fun :)

8 ) The Bangles - Eternal Flame (Basically its my favourite love song ever. Full stop :) )

I'm sure there's more to come...

1.  Beatles  I Should Have Known Better  This song just is the embodiment of the early Beatles sound - to me it is what a Beatles song 'should sound like'

2.  Skyhooks  Living In The 70's  The Aus band that took the 70's by storm, this is their title track from their first album, and even though it's almost 30 years on, it is still as fresh today - a social commentary (as most of their work was) about living in that era

3.  Split Enz  I Got You  From their breakthrough album, 'True Colours', a simple song about a guy's affection for a girl, but he can't quite bring himself to let her know.  The whole album was great.

4.  Icehouse  Great Southern Land  An Aussie classic - this song is one that describes Australia perfectly, without resorting to nauseating you in the process - should replace 'Advance Australia Fair' as our National Anthem.  Hey !  I'm not joking...

5.  Mississippi  Kings Of The World  Mississippi were the forerunners to the Little River Band - this song, even though I really don't know what it is about, makes me shiver !

6.  Argent  Hold Your Head Up  Great song about not letting the mongrels beat you down

7.  Todd Rundgren  I Saw The Light  I once saw this described as the perfect pop song, it's lyrics are so true.  If you have ever been in the situation the song describes, you will know...

8.  Pretenders  I'll Stand By You  Like the Todd Rundgren song, another one that is so true.  This one makes me both happy and sad all in one

9.  Marianne Faithful  Truth Bitter Truth  A beautiful tragic and sad song, sung with a beautiful voice - if only I could work out what the song was about !  ::)

10.  Fifth Dimension  Age Of Aquarius  The voice of Marilyn McCoo  :P  In that song it just makes me melt - Meow !  :-*

These are today's selections.  As with most people here, the choices will be different next week.

In no particular order:

Dead Can Dance   Tell Me About The Forest (You Once Called Home) A really good introductory song.  It gives the essence of the male lead vocals.

House Of Pain  House Of Pain Anthem Another good introductory song

Monsoon featuring Sheila Chandra   Indian Princess   It's a really sad song, but it's a good blend of traditional Indian music, and modern pop ballads.  It's also a good start to see the range of Sheila Chandra's voice

Dio Dream Evil   A really good song for overall style, both musically and lyrically.

Andreas Vollenweider   Pace Verde  The perfect blend of New Age meditative, and poppy, energetic styles.

Loreena McKennitt   The Old Ways   It's just one of my favorites.

Adam & The Ants  Stand and Deliver This is where he began to be popular in the states, and is a cool song

Hawkwind   Dragons And Fables   Yeah, it's from a "concept" album, and not indicative of their regular style, but that's where I started. (and Elric rules!)

Alien Sex Fiend Alien Sex Fiend  This song best describes their attitude towards their stage shows and  music.  Can also be described as "Halloween on Acid"

Think Tree   Rattlesnake   A local-to-Boston band that broke up about seven years ago, this is their most accessable-to-the-masses song.  They tried to blend all forms of music in one band's playlist.  They played blues, punk, country-western, folk, rap, heavy-metal and more, sometimes blending two or more styles in the same song.  Suprisingly it worked, and their popularity here was just beginning to spread elsewhere when they broke up.
