They did and they do. My guess is that's because a generation or two again they weren't draining the bacon/pork/chicken fat while cooking; they used heavy cast iron cookware; the taste was tattooed as "good" onto our DNA when we were young and impressionable.

Hon, I keep a well-seasoned cast iron skillet in the oven, never touching soap, and a bowl of bacon grease in the fridge. (Have I not mentioned my white trash roots recently? Oh yeah, bacon fat makes everything goooood.)
Personally I blame it on my lack of space. It's very hard to mix candy properly when you don't have any elbow room.

The "official" name is Israeli Honey Cookies. They are made with honey instead of sugar, oatmeal, rasins, walnuts, and chocolate chips.
They've been a family tradition since I can remember...
