Subject: When you're not supposed to laugh, but do anyway

Written By: Rice Cube on 12/20/02 at 02:30 p.m.

This is sort of an interesting idea.  When I see movies, sometimes there are scenes that I just find unintentionally funny, and I laugh, and everyone else thinks I'm nuts.

For example, in "The Bourne Identity" with Matt Damon, our hero has finished beating the crap out of the bad guy.  The bad guy has puncture wounds all over the place, broken legs, and doesn't stand a chance.  So he gets up, right?  I expected him to just keep on going, but instead, he breaks through the window and falls over the railing to his death!  I chuckled and giggled for about ten seconds before I realized that nobody else found it funny.  :)

Alright Rice !

This one always gets to me !

"The Poseidon Adventure"

Leslie Nielson is the captain (in his pre-humour days).  So the radar spots this big tidal wave coming of the port bow, or starboard who knows)....

So do they do the logical thing and turn towards it ?  NO !  ::)  The leave themselves broadside to it.... >:(

And the suspense builds for 5 minutes or so and finally they look out the window and see this huge wall of water coming towards them, and THEN !  THEN !  Neilson says "Full to Port".

By which time it's far too late hey ?  Where'd he get his boat licence anyhow ?

And as the giant wave is about to consume them all, the last shot is of Neilson tilting with the ship and saying in his best serious voice :

Oh, My Goddddd !

Trouble is, when I see it now, and it's Leslie Neilson, all I can do is start laughing, because of who he is.

I know exactly what you mean. I have seen so many I will have to think about this one for a while. I even get into real life situations where laughing is definitely not the correct reaction but I can't help it.

I am also one of those who sometimes giggles when the time is inappropriate.  I could never figure out why I do this...maybe somehow it helps me deal with the seriousness of the situation better... :-/

Happened to me when I saw Hannibal (in the theater the day after it opened).

Remember the dinner scene at the end?  Scooping and sauting and feeding the 'brainy' guy?  It made me laugh like a Mel Brooks movie makes me laugh...

Course, I was the only one in the theater laughing  :-[

I'm sure you are a wonderful person that means no harm but I can tell you that situation I could post in "things I hate" thread.  As a supervisor I've had to address things that were important and have been met with giggles, the old "Is this funny to you question" given with the Clint Eastwood glare ususally stopped it.  Also as a customer with a problem it's very infuriationg, I remember one time going to pick up some film and they had ruined the the entire roll, shots that could be never captured again, the person could only giggle as she was explaining it to me.  I had to not say a word and leave quickly before I burst into flames.  :o
But I like you  :-*

Race, I can understand you being angry those situations are not funny at all. I don't know why it happens to me but I am one of those ppl that when a situation turns very tense and serious, it only takes something very small to set me to tittering...and usually what sets me off is not very funny to anyone else. Maybe it is because I am not good with upsetting situations. I don't know ???

OMG, Race, so did I! ;D ;D

I used to work with a woman who had a "nervous laugh".  When she was nervous or afraid, she would laugh.  This caused her a lot of trouble on job interviews.  Naturally, she is nervous because she wants the job, then the interviewer tosses out an "odd" question to see how she would react under pressure.

She went to every interview workshop in town to try to get used to the interview process, to dull herself to being interviewed in order to stop herself from laughing.  She even went to a mental health clinic, where she was told it was a common problem, and since it was not normally life-crippling, there was very little they could do to help her, other than to suggest she keep going to practice interview workshops. :(

I've also been known to desparately try to stifle a giggle at a wake or funeral.

Someone usually tells me something funny, about a family member or neighbor, and it makes me laugh.  Then I try to disguise it as a cough or sneeze, so I don't look or sound like I'm being disrespectful. :(

Then I feel really sorry for that woman. I don't have a problem at interviews... thank goodness. And I am not crippled by this phenomenon...it just sneaks up on me sometimes.

Subject: Re: When you're not supposed to laugh, but do anyw

It is common and I take that into account, really I think everyone does it to some degree.  I would thing that the worst time to have it would be at job interviews, I give a lot of interviews and I listen to more on how things are said than what is said.
I think I mentioned in the "if I ruled the World" subject something about requireing everyone must be trained on filling out an application before they can leave school.  I would really like to be able to train the world in that, resumes and interviewing, there are many out there that need help.

I watched Gremlins tonight for the first time in about...hmm nevermind how many years...and I don't know if the filmmakers meant it, but every "terrifying" scene made me giggle. Especially when Billy's mother gets attacked by the Christmas tree Gremlin. Something about this huge tree tackling this little woman was funny to me. And the gremlin that bit the dust in the microwave. Like I said maybe they meant that to be humorous...but even if they didn't it was funny.

Movies: I laughed when I saw "A Walk To Remember", "Cool As Ice"...on VH1 (don't ask), "Speed", "Spawn", and the Mad Max films.

TV Specials: "The Future Is Wild", "The Disco Ball", "Living with Michael Jackson" and anything from MTV since 1998. (that's not intentionally funny)

Music: any current "so called punk", nu metal, current teen pop, and cheesy hip hop acts.

In college, I had to take a night class-this was after taking 3 other classes during the day. By that time, I was so slap-happy-but I was not alone. Half the class was that way-including the professor. I remember sitting in class and just having the uncontrolable giggles. I was trying to supress it as much as I could but it just didn't help. I prayed that someone would say something even slightly humorous so I could just let out that laugh that I was trying so desprately to hold in.

Another time when I can't help but laugh is when someone..um..passes gas. Can't help it at times.

I am so bad about laughing when it is supposed to be a solemn occasion. I swear I don't know why-the funniest things pop into my head when I am supposed to be solemn.  :-/

And when someone falls I lose it. Can't help it. To make matters worse, I will usually pop off with "Have a nice trip? See you next fall." or something like that. Even if I don't say it I definitely think it which starts the tittering.  :-X

I laughed until I was on the floor when I was watching Star Wars Episode II. It was when Anikan tried in vain to save his mother and he had her die in his arms.

When he came in, her first words to him were "Anikan? Is that you? Oh, you look so handsome." I thought I was going to die right there. I was laughing so hard and the best/worst part of it had yet to come. Just as she's about to die she says to her son. "Just remember, I'll always love...*dies*"

I always found horrible acting hilarious. I was near tears with laughter, which was very annoying to the rest of the people in the theatre.  ;D

I can't think of any movie scenes right off the top of my head, but my main weakness for innappropriate laughter is in real life!  One example:  One of my husbands high school friends got married several years ago.  My hubby was one of his groomsmen.  There were about 6 bridesmaids & 6 groomsmen BUT, the bridesmaid my husband was supposed to walk down the isle didnt show up.  Did I mention yet how HORRIBLE the tuxes, dresses, and hats were in this wedding?  Each girl had a  different, very BRIGHT colored dress on.  Each guy had tie & cumberbund (SP?) to match.  HIDEOUS colors.  I held in my laughter throughout most of the processional, but it had been building, and when my poor hubby had to walk in all by himself, I LOST IT.  They also had all kinds of screw ups on the music -- bad notes hit, etc etc.  I really felt awful, and felt sorry for them..but I was SOOO close to having to get up and leave the sanctuary.  I think I came close to having a stroke from holding in the laughter!

Durania, weddings are always so much fun for me, too.  Especially when something goes wrong.  During my best friend's wedding, the priest (who is older than God, I think) kept saying "say" (like some people say ummm, etc).  I counted 283 during the service.  When I got to 100, I started cracking up.  Since I was a bridesmaid, I pretended like I was crying, but one of the other bridesmaids knew I was laughing and she started, too.  We watched the tape a few years ago and all started cracking up.  I missed 3, though, it was actually 286! ;D

I always laugh at my own misfortune (to the great misfortune of others).

For example, the other day, when I hurt my leg badly, the only thing I could do was look at the soccer ball that tripped me up and start laughing hysterically. I make that an unwanted habit.
