CALGARY (CP) - Harvey the Hound, the Calgary Flames mascot, needs a new tongue after pushing Edmonton Oilers coach Craig MacTavish too far on Monday night.

With the Flames leading the Oilers 4-0 early in the third period, Harvey - a white dog with a foot-long, floppy red tongue - began taunting MacTavish at the side of the Oilers bench during a TV timeout. When play resumed, Harvey moved behind the bench and continued to taunt the Oilers. Once play had stopped, Harvey leaned over the glass behind the Oilers bench prompting MacTavish to grab the tongue, rip it out and throw it into the crowd.

Undeterred, Harvey kept leaning over the glass. MacTavish then reached for a hockey stick but was calmed by Oilers trainer Ken Lowe.

Several Oilers proceeded to squirt Harvey with their water bottles before security moved the mascot away.

"(Harvey) was in a place he shouldn't have been," said Flames spokesman Peter Hanlon.

The battle with Harvey seemed to inspire the Oilers, who scored three times in a span of less than four minutes late in the third to make the game close.

Calgary hung on to win 4-3.

MacTavish spent 17 seasons in the NHL, picking 891 penalty minutes in 1,093 games. He's in his third season as Oilers coach.

According to the Flames' Web site, Harvey is six-foot-six, 200 pounds.

My only question is, why do the Flames have a canine mascot?  ???

I thought it was hilarious when Theo Fleury beat up Sharky in San Jose last year.

An overzealous Red Wings fan threw an Octopus because it symbolized how they only needed 8 more wins to bring home the cup..it worked, they won and so it became tradition.

Panthers fans throw rats because a Panther player (can't think of who at the moment) once hit a rat with his stick on the way out to the ice for a playoff game. He scored the game winner, said it was due to the rat and so it became tradition...they went on to the cup finals that year. That tradition has now been halted by the NHL....

As for Canadiens fans throwing Canadians...I almost fell off my chair when I read that one!! Thanks for the giggle!

I don't think that actually happens...that was just a spoof for a Snickers commercial a few years back :)  It was good though.
