Subject: What Is Your Hometown Famous For?

Written By: Squirrel on 01/25/03 at 04:25 a.m.

My hometown is Mount Airy, North Carolina.  Its claim to fame is:

The hometown of Andy Griffith - The Andy Griffith Show was loosely based on Mount Airy and neighboring towns and different Mount Airy shops and restaurants were mentioned on the show.

The hometown of country singer Donna Fargo

Home of the world's largest open-faced granite quarry.

What's your hometown known for?   :)

I'm from a small city in Wisconsin called Fond du Lac.
It's supposedly French for "Foot of the Lake."
The international headquarters for Mercury Marine motors is there.  Karl Keikhafer revolutionized the outbaord motor business with Mercury Motors.

Well, St. Paul was the home of rail baron James J. Hill.  His Summit Avenue mansion is about two miles from me and I toured it once.  It was... thick and low.  It gave me claustrophobia.
For the life of me, I can't remember anyone famous coming from this city.

I'm from Boston, Massachusetts.

The obvious:

-The Boston Tea Party

-The Boston Massacre

-Paul Revere lived here, and his house still stands, it's open to visitors.

-The U.S.S. Constitution, nicknamed "Old Ironsides", the oldest still-commissioned ship in the US Navy is docked here and is open to visitors.

-The Battle of Bunker Hill (which was actually fought on nearby Breed's Hill  ::) )

-Former President John F. Kennedy grew up here.

Less obvious:

-Dangerously scary driving (college students one point each, all other pedestrians 10 points, little old lady with a walker 50 points.)

-Logan Airport and it's frighteningly lax security :(  (two of the planes that were used in the Sept 11 attacks took off from here.  :'( :'( )

-We talk funny!  We cannot naturally pronounce the letter "R" if it falls in the middle or at the end of a word.

-There are a plethora of colleges and universities within city limits, most unknown outside of town (Simmons, Emmanuel, Emerson, Bay State, ect.)

There's a whole lot more but I don't want to bore you. :D

Maybe not as well known for this, but as a "local" I would suggest if you ever visit, head for Mass Street (Massachusetts Street). The best part about Mass is all the literally every trend, every clique, every kind of person or group you can think of can and will be found there. Also the Bottleneck, right off of  Mass is the place to go for live performance. Many bands for some reason hit it big right after playing there (FooFighters for one).

Day on the Hill: a mini mini Woodstock, a whole day of bands and jamming for free, picnics and etc. I had the  honor of seeing Pearl Jam play the Hill in 1992.  :D

Too much more to include here. I love my hometown.

Not too shabby for Kansas. ;D

*sigh* I miss living there.

1983 - the first place in 100 years to win the America's Cup away from the Americans.
1987 - the first place in the world to hold an America's Cup event - not in the US.

Birthplace of Heath Ledger.

Location of really bad Judges who give pathetic 12 month jail sentences for rape and murder - where other states give 30 years.

Man I am stuggling to think of any others !!!!!!

Not sure what you mean by "Spaghetti Bowl" but the rest of it is cool.   ;)

That's what I would've said if I lived in Tempe.  However, Phoenix is my hometown, so I would have to say it's famous for The Wallace and Ladmo show.  This kids' show ran for 35 years (1954-1989) on KPHO-TV channel 5.  This show was the best!  :D

Midas-

I couldn't agree more.  I was on that show back when I was like 8 or 9.  That was a pretty big thrill back then.  Did you ever go?  I'm still pissed that I didn't win a Ladmo Bag.

Famous Phoenicians:  Alice Cooper, Stevie Nicks, and Lynda Carter- pretty versatile group don't you think?!

I also forgot to mention that Charleston, WV, was one of the first places east of the Mississippi to have a Taco Bell!

Loughborough, Leics, UK

Paula Radcliffe lives here some of the year, Steve Backley, Seb Coe and some other athletes lived and studied here.

Several films have had scenes shot here.  The local steam preservation trust is the only one in Britain with two tracks so it has been used in Enigma, 64 (?) Charing Cross Road and the new Nicole Kidman movie The Hours among others.  A British drama series, Casualty, also filmed a dramatic scene here.

Robert Bakewell pioneered stock breeding here!

Zanesville, Ohio:

Home of the "World Famous Y-Bridge".  Where you can literally go to the middle of the bridge and make a right.  Or left.

Named after the grandfather of (mostly Westerns) author Zane Grey.

Famous for pottery making, mentioned quite often on Antique Roadshow.

DJ Midas & FunkyFresh:

I've been catching a "best of" Wallace & Ladmo show hosted by Pat McMahon on what used to be the Prescott channel (13).  I think it's on Sun nights.  Some great stuff from the 60s-90s, with still shots from the first few yrs.

I'm a transplant from '81, so all of the 60s & 70s stuff is really cool.  And then seeing a bit from the 80s and remembering watching while getting ready for school....ok, I just felt more bones creak!

And, no, I never got the coveted Ladmo Bag, either.  But a friend of mine did!

I'm originally from Nottingham

Famous for Robin Hood of course!
And the castle (which looks nothing like the one in the Costner movie)

Nottingham also had a fairly well known lace market, was home to Rayleigh bikes, John Player cigarettes and Boots the chemists.

LJK4, you forgot the "Motor City Madman" himself, Ted Nugent!!
(Or maybe you left him out on purpose)
We "old school" rockers (KISS had a song named for, and about it) knew Detroit as "ROCK CITY"!!! (Due to all the rockers to come out of that area; Ted, Bob Seager, Iggy Pop, Grand Funk, etc. etc. etc.)
