Subject: Minesweeper - love it or hate it ?
I like playing minesweeper, keeps the mind sharp (as much as that is possible ::))
What I hate is getting to the last two squares, within my best time, and having a 50/50 choice, and making the wrong one >:(

My personal record on beginner is 6 seconds...on intermediate, it's 38 seconds, and on expert it balloons to something like 107 seconds. I hate that last two squares thing, bugs the crap out of me because it takes logic out of the equation.
But sometimes we all have to make that leap of faith ;)

lots of hand/mouse/eye coordination ;)
I find a trackman might work pretty well, if you can get used to it...but a normal mouse is what I got my records on. The world record for expert is 51 seconds, by the way. That guy must've redshifted or something, because that is FAST FINGER WORK! :o

I used to play minesweeper all the time a while ago the only record i remember having was on the beginner of 2 seconds it was one of those freak things where i clicked on the board in just the right spot and the whole board cleared itself out and i won. I dont play it much anymore though cause i kind of got tired of it for some reason.

These were all on incredibly lucky rounds.

I love Minesweeper! I'm only disappointed that the maximum size is so small :D I could just see myself pondering a really complicated board for half an hour...

I used to love it. Knackered my index finger (RSI type thingy) and two mouses playing it. Now I play Freecell instead.

I agree about the two square thing. At first I must have been lucky because I always got it right. I assumed it was programmed to give it to you on either square but I was sadly mistaken.
BTW TripsMom that was a funny remark. Got a funny look from other people at work for laughing at my computer! ;D

Can somebody please explain to me how, in the "expert' version, how a score of anywhere near 87 could be achieved ?
Given that you have to flag 99 bombs, and click on some other squares and make decisions and deductions etc, I just can't see how it can be done..... ???
I mean, taking all the above things into account, we are talking about half to three quarters of a second to identify and flag each bomb ? It seems unlikely.......
What is the secret to your success please ?

Haven't played minesweeper in quite a while. Used to play it all the time. Now, I usually play freecell or mahjongg. My honey's sister lent us her mahjongg program and we play that all the time now. (It is new so we haven't got sick of that yet.) Another game that we like to a lot is "Civilzation." Has anyone played that? It really is a fun game.

There are one or two tricks to Minesweeper which you may have already worked out but I don't think are obvious.
When you've flagged a mine you can doubled click on any other square which relates to it and it reveals all the other squares that 'could' be a mine.
There are some obvious patterns to learn such as 121
And the number one tip is to just click, click, click on each board randomly at first either till you blow up or you get a lucky square and lots of the board just clears.

I already had worked out the 1-2-1 pattern
And I happily clickety click until a big space opens up (the bigger the better !)
But I certainly didn't know about the Double Click on adjacent squares....Grrrr ! Why wasn't I informed ! ::)
So I tried that and it didn't work for me OH NO ! But I see what you mean by double click is simultaneous left and right click...
Attached is a quote form Help :
If you have marked all the mines around a numbered square, you can uncover the remaining squares around it by clicking the numbered square with the left and right mouse buttons simultaneously. If not all mines surrounding the numbered square have been marked, the remaining covered or unmarked squares will appear to be depressed (or flash) when the numbered square is clicked with both buttons simultaneously.

If you're running NT/2k, click your first square then hit <escape>... and the clock stops. One second every time ;-)
Previously this minimised minesweeper, and restoring it would restart the clock. For some reason, <esc> no longer minimizes the window, but still stops the clock. You have to minimize then restore to restart the clock.

My top time is 180 seconds on expert (I don't bother with the other two levels)... just because you can set a 1-second time, doesn't mean you have to cheat ;-)

After reading this thread, I decided to give minesweeper a try. But twice now it appears to have malfunctioned. Can anyone explain this please:
(the e's represent empty space, the X's were mines)
(the top of the page is above these rows...)
(the ?'s were where I marked for mines)

e e e 1 3 ? 2 1 1
e e e e 1 1
In order for the 3 to have 3 mines, they HAVE to be in the spaces marked ? because all the other spaces surrounding the 3 are already marked with numbers or are empty space.
Therefore, how can there have been a mine to the right of the upper 2, because in that case, both 2's would have to be 3's!
???

How can the ? not be a mine? If it isn't, then the lower left hand 1 has no mine. If the ? is indeed a mine, then how can the left hand X be a mine (which it was), because then the upper 2 would have to be a '3'!

This was the entire full top of the screen, not a corner. Either way it wouldn't matter, because it wouldn't change the fact that there appears to be a problem.... :(

The game isn't malfunctioning: you've made a mistake - after all, the X is where you think a mine is, not necessarily where one actually is: the left-hand 'x' in the top row is wrong.
