This is Variation of the Most Boring Song thread.  My top 5 most depressing songs are:

1)  Fast Car-Tracy Chapman
2)  Luca-Susanne Vega
3)  Daughter-Pearl Jam
4)  The Car-Various Artists
5)  That really famous Chris Issak song-The whole melodie just makes me want to crawl into bed and cry.

What are yours?

1)  Wicked Game--Chris Isaak (I think that's the song you were referring to)
2)  Tears in Heaven--Eric Clapton
3)  Daniel--Don McClean (I think ???)
4)  Hands to Heaven--Breathe  (but still one of my favs)

Can't think of any more right now.

3. Red - Treble Charger
4. Apparitions - Matthew Good Band
5. Hurt - Nine Inch Nails

Me And Little Andy - Dolly Parton
Spring - Tanya Tucker
Where Were You When The World Stopped Turning - Alan Jackson
Concrete Angel - Martina McBride

The last one doesn't really matter in my case, because it would change all the time. ;)  The others will be eternal.
Although these songs are depressing, I'd never stop listening to them.  Of course, I haven't heard the first two since the 80s, but I remember them word for word.

Brick - Ben Folds Five
Don't Change Your Plans - Ben Folds Five
Camera One - Josh Joplin Group
If You See Her, Say Hello - Bob Dylan
River - Joni Mitchell
Lost Cause - Beck
Silent All These Years - Tori Amos

It's funny how some of the most depressing songs end up in my car player and on my computer ::) I just dig that kind of sound a lot.

Here are some songs that I think are depressing or sound depressing:

"Fade Into You" by Mazzy Star

"Wicked Game (Instrumental)" by Chris Isaak

"Sketch For Summer" (intrumental) by The Durutti Column

"Oscillate Wildly" (intrumental) by The Smiths

"El Cariño Es Como Una Flor" by Rudy LaScala

"Runaway Train" by Soul Asylum

"Tears Of A Clown" by Smokey Robinson (this one can do me in at the right moment).

"St. John" by Tuxedomoon

"Come Before Christ And Murder Love" by Death In June

"Oprofessionell" by Kent (this one I can only describe as what heroin would feel like if the sensation was translated into music).

"Life In Mono" by Mono

"See You" by Depeche Mode

"Only You" by Yazoo

"Ghosts" by Japan (if this song doesn't move you, you clearly are made of stone).

I can think of many more, but these are my main sleeping pills.

I was compiling a list of depressing songs and I started to notice that they were all "love songs" and that's a different topic in itself.  Therefore I thought about what songs were truly depressing.  I mean so bad that I can hardly listen to them without my eyes tearing up.  And this is a partial list of what I came up with.  In no particular order:

"Me & Little Andy" - Dolly Parton
"Everybody Hurts" - REM
"Tears In Heaven" - Eric Clapton
"Angel" - Sarah McLauchlan
"Adrian" - Jewel
"Brick" - Ben Folds Five
"Blasphemous Rumours" - Depeche Mode
"Eleanor Rigby" - The Beatles
"Cats In The Cradle" - Harry Chapin
"The Dance" - Garth Brooks
"Round Here" - Counting Crows
"In The Ghetto" - Elvis Presley
"Bridge Over Troubled Water" - Simon & Garfunkle

If you ever want to wallow in your own self pity for a day, google & read the lyrics to every one of these songs.  But you better have plenty of tissue, you'll need it.  :'( :'(

I probably shouldn't list here right now, but I'm feeling good today, so here goes:

"Against All Odds" - Phil Collins
"One More Time" - The Cure
"Broken Wings" - Mr. Mister
"Making Love out of Nothing at All" - Air Supply
"Tears In Heaven" - Eric Clapton

...that's one of very few songs that brings tears to my eyes, though only since I've had children of my own.  And it's one of the reasons I've got pretty much no hobbies left, as I give pretty much all my free time to my children.

Depressing whole albums:
The Wall/The Final Cut - Pink Floyd
Script For a Jester's Tear- Marillion (brilliant, but depressing)

Phil

My list of depressing songs can go on forever, but I think I can limit it to five. ;D

1. The Morning After -Linkin Park
2. In the End -Linkin Park
3. Bother -Stone Sour
4. Crazy -Kidneythieves
5. Piece of My Heart -Janis Joplin (Big Brother & the Holding Company)

Like you couldn't guess that I'd put songs by Linkin Park. :D

My list could probably go on forever as well, Jessica, but this one is definitely way up there on my list. The first time I listened to this song I cried; there was a lot happening at that time in my life and this song allowed me to release my grief.....for those who haven't heard this song, here are the lyrics:

"Wish I was too dead to cry
My self-affliction fades
Stones to throw at my creator
Masochists to which I cater
You don't need to bother;
I don't need to be
I'll keep slipping farther
But once I hold on,
I won't let go 'til it bleeds

Wish I was too dead to care
If indeed I cared at all
Never had a voice to protest
So you fed me sh*t to digest
I wish I had a reason;
my flaws are open season
For this, I gave up trying
One good turn deserves my dying

You don't need to bother;
I don't need to be
I'll keep slipping farther
But once I hold on,
I won't let go 'til it bleeds

Wish I'd died instead of lived
A zombie hides my face
Shell forgotten
with its memories
Diaries left
with cryptic entries

And you don't need to bother;
I don't need to be
I'll keep slipping farther
But once I hold on,
I won't let go 'til it bleeds

You don't need to bother;
I don't need to be
I'll keep slipping farther
But once I hold on:
I'll never live down my deceit"

"waste" - smash mouth
"dirty magic" - the offspring (dunno, it's just sad to me)
"self esteem" - the offspring
"adam's song" - blink-182 (of course, this also reminds me of a not-so-fun time, so that's a huge factor...)
"say it ain't so" - weezer

Adam's Song--Blink182
Emotionless--Good Charlotte
Stole--Kelly Rowland...(it's sad but overplayed...)

Yeah, that's pretty much it!!!

My votes for depressing songs:

I Will Never Marry by Morrissey "I will live my life as I will undoubtedly die---alone."  :(

Revelation (Mother Earth) by Ozzy Osbourne

Saint Judy by Marc Almond  "And if I die before I wake up, I pray the Lord, don't smudge my makeup."

The Story of Beauty by Destiny's Child  It tells about a girl who was molested as a child, and the horror her life is.  :'(

The music video for that song is beautiful. It conveys the same feeling that Simply Red's video for "Holding Back The Years" does. It's kind of melancholy and, of course, I'm in love with the young lady/protagonist. She has these beautiful blue eyes, soft-looking fair skin, and short brown hair. Really good song too ;)

3. Goodbye's (The Saddest Word)- Celine Dion
4. Travelin' Soldier- The Dixie Chicks
5. Don't Take The Girl- Tim McGraw
And if we can have more than 5, Please Remember Me by Tim McGraw is also very sad. Someone from my school died in a car accident last year, and they played that song at graduation for him. It always made me sad anyway, but wow....  :'(

The songs that are poignant to me . . .

'Sacrifice' - Elton John
'Hold on' - Wilson Phillips
'Senza una Donna' - Paul Young and Zucherro
'Turn back the clock' - Johnny Hates Jazz

And the songs that are just depressing . . .

'Seasons in the sun' - Terry Jacks
'Run to him' - Bobby Vee
'Life's what you make it' - Talk Talk
'Dear God' - XTC
'It's my party' - Eurythmics
'Words' - F.R David

There is also something vaguely depressing about the song 'Eloise' by The Damned.
