Subject: In case you missed it on amIright.. I'm outta work

Written By: ChuckyG on 03/10/03 at 09:56 a.m.

yup.. laid off.. the economy isn't doing real good right now, and the upcoming war is certainly not going to help my job hunt.. but I'm going to brush off the old resume and try nosing about for a job. If you know of any open Java developer positions, let me know.

Dude, that sucks :(

Took me forever to find a job too...and I have credentials up the wazoo.  I'm sure with your experience you'll have no troubles finding a new job.  Have you looked at working for schools, like UMass, for example?

well.. I don't have a masters, so I can't teach.. and I don't really do network support, so that's probably not going to help..

I'm sure I'll find something, I just never wanted to do it under these types of circumstances..

Sorry to hear it Chucky.  I know how it is, I've been out of work since July. :-/

I'm hoping something will open up for me soon, this time of year businesses are looking to get their taxes squared away (my field is accounting, but I don't have an advanced degree).

Do you qualify for the extra 13 weeks of unemployment from the feds?  I hope you wouldn't need it, but it can certainly ease your mind, knowing one way or the other.

no idea yet.. I know it takes around 2 weeks to start getting anything from Massachusetts.. and even then, it maxes out at signficantly less than I was making..

I'm going to try and give chuckyg.com a face lift, and use it in my job hunt.. it's easy to remember, and should be useful for listing out all my skills..

Yeah, my unemployment check is just under half of what I was making when I was working.  Just enough to keep you alive, (as long as you don't plan on eating  ::) ) but not enough to make you so comfortable that you will stay on it.

Massachusetts normally gives 30 weeks.  The federal extention gives you another 12 or 13 weeks, but only for people who applied for benefits during a certain time frame.  For some reason "March" stood out in my mind, which is why I asked.

I'm betting you'll have an easier time finding a new job than I'm having, with your abilities.  :)

I don't think the federal extension is still offered.. but then again, I never paid attention to unemployment before, because I've been on the go since I left college..

I wouldn't take that bet right now.. there's a lot of software engineers out of work, and unless you have a skill someone needs, it's near impossible to find work.. I did work in two different areas (embedded systems and web development), but those things aren't usually found together, so I have to apply for one or the other at most places..

Seriously, I hope all goes well on your job search. You've got... natural ability, so I know you'll be back in the workforce soon enough. Still, it's a bummer to hear about that. It's like the Ides Of March... we have to be more aware of those...

I do want to thank everyone for the kind words.. I'm still trying to adjust to being out of work..

I still haven't finished updating my resume.. I really wish I had been given more opportunity at my job before they pushed me out the door.. goes to show you, that loyalty to a company is not valued in a rough economy..

Ain't that the bitter truth! They expect employee loyalty but they don't give it back ! Fingers crossed you find something soon.Maybe you could try something completely different? My other half is a graphic designer but he couldn't find a design job so to keep the wolf from the door is now driving forklift trucks in a warehouse and loves it !
