I am relatively ignorant of "hair" but here goes ::)

1.  Pour Some Sugar On Me -- Def Leppard
2.  Welcome To The Jungle -- Guns n' Roses

:P

1.  Youth Gone Wild - Skid Row
2.  Dr. Feelgood - Motley Crue
3.  Livin' on a Prayer - Bon Jovi
4.  Here I Go Again - Whitesnake
5.  Looks That Kill - Motley Crue
6.  We're Not Gonna Take It - Twisted Sister
7.  Sister Christian - Night Ranger
8.  I Remember You - Skid Row
9.  Wanted Dead or Alive - Bon Jovi
10.  You Think You're Tough - Ratt
11.  Every Rose Has Its Thorn - Poison
12.  More Than Words - Extreme

And that's all the hair metal I can stand.

I'm not sure if Guns n' Roses or Def Leppard count as hair metal (Gn'R were a little too harsh, Leppard not quite hairy enough).  If they do count, put "Sweet Child o' Mine" and "Photograph" right at the the numbers one and two spot on that list and bump everything else down a couple notches.

'hair' bands such as 'Aliceband in Chains'???"

Sorry, I agree with Goreripper. No way were Metallica a hair metal band even though they had long hair !It was a different genre of rock music completely if you were meaning bands like them and Anthrax,Megadeth,Iron Maiden,Judas Preist,AC/DC etc you would have to make this 80's metal bands as well.As a fan of the music it really is a COMPLETELY different kettle of fish.Just because a band had long hair it didn't make them a 'hair' metal band there's a definate difference between the styles.

On another note could someone post the list of the top 50 from the show when it happens as I for one won't be able to listen but I would be interested to see the results.

OK, I can clearly see that the Metallica reference has ruffled some feathers, so then would somebody please let me know  the exact definition of what a "Hair Metal" band is.  All I know, is that in High School (in the 80's) everyone listening to Metallica had "long hair", Metallica had "long hair", when they were  performing they would flip-flop their "long hair" all over the stage.  I am not trying to debate the issue, just looking for some clarification please.  And if it has anything to do with the fact that they didn't use "hairspray", you cannot tell me that those boys never used hair products.   ;)  And as far as make-up, Kurt wore eyeliner so  :P

How did I know that this "argument", "disagreement", what ever you want to call it, was going to happen. Its just another example of why I hate to catagorize or put labels on bands and different styles of music. :-/ That said.......
1. Welcome To The Jungle - Guns-n-Roses
2. Pour Some Sugar on Me - Def Leppard
3. Kiss Me Deadly - Lita Ford
4. Fuel - Metallica
5. Sister Christian - Night Ranger
See, if I hadn't read this thread, I wouldn't have considered any of these "Hair Metal" so, shows you how much I know. ::)

Any performer or any band that was featured in any of the metal mags of the 80's fall into the category.

We could break it down into sub-categories 'till "the cows come home", but if the editors of these mags thought to clump them together in their mags, who are we to argue.  ;)

Examples of these mags, including but not limited to:

Metal Edge
Circus
Hit Parader
Metal Madness

Hair metal = pretty boys in tons of make-up and GIGANTIC hair playing in big dumb bands that play big, dumb, fun party music and/or sincere, really-funny-after-the-fact power ballads.

Metallica do not fit this description at all.
Guns n' Roses did not play big dumb party music.
Def Leppard, Quiet Riot, Night Ranger and a few others didn't have enough hair or makeup but the spirit is still largely the same.

Hair Metal is the b@$t@rd child of 70s Glam Rock. Even Motley Crue and Poison agree on that one.

I prefer Glam Rock myself (I consider it a pioneering musical movement), but the influence is definitely there in Hair Wrock.

Subject: Re: Renegade Retro Hair Bands

Written By: resinchaser on 03/16/03 at 04:47 p.m.

We (my friends and I) always thought "Glam Rock" was groups like Queen, or Bowie. We always referred to groups like Poison and Motley Crue as "Co*k Rock", because most of their music was about sex.

Subject: Re: Renegade Retro Hair Bands

Written By: Goreripper on 03/16/03 at 05:04 p.m.

I think the generally accepted definition of a "hair" band was a glam/pop- metal acts with a look characterised by huge hairstyles, usually teased, spandex, varying degrees of make-up and images based on or bas*ardised variations of those popularised by Alice Cooper, David Bowie and Kiss in the 70s. Musically too, they tended to play fairly simple rock and roll, albeit often with a melodic bent.
The more aggressive metal bands typically had long hair too, but their look and musical approach was significantly different. That's why I would argue that Metallica was not a "hair" band. Having hair alone didn't make a band a hair band. There was an entire look, musical approach and affected attitude that went with the phenomonon -- not just hair itself.  ;D

BTW -- Guns N' Roses was definitely a "hair" band, at least in the beginning. If you need proof, just check out the shots of them from their 'Live Like a Suicide' days on the "Lies" album.  ;D

But it's true.  They fit the "hair band" label.  Big hair, long hair, t-shirts and jeans, or leather, or spandex.  They had the look to some degree, and the same "this is all one big party" attitude.  The music was the difference between them all, which varied from band to band.  Metallica played what we referred to as "thrash metal" or "speed metal".  Krokus, Motorhead, et al played "heavy metal".  Def Leppard in the early 80's played heavy metal, but by late 80's were simply "metal".  Poison and Warrant, for example, were labeled as "hair metal".

No one's saying Metallica played hair metal.  But they did fit the bill as hair bands.

I do agree with Goreripper, but it is Thundervamp's show, so if Metalica is in, there is nothing we can do about it. There are so many reasons metalica should be disqualified it is not even funny.  The only way the request show is possible is P2P, and Metalic has taken a strong stand against that.  Since they cut their Hair, and were more popular with short hair, should they count?

OK, you guys might be able to slide Metallica and Megadeth into this group on a technicality, but please for the love of God don't lump Motorhead in with the likes of Stryper and Winger.

I used to listen to my fair share of Cock Rock, and i'm not knocking any of the bands mentioned above, but no one on this earth can convince me that Motorhead deserves to be on this list.

Hey I'm all for early Metallica songs polluting the airwaves. I was just being pedantic.  :)  But in answer to Screwball, Metallica is more like a hair band now they don't have long hair than it was when they did.  ;)

LOL.  Changing with the times disqualification?  Does this mean Def Leppard is also no longer eligible, as they also cut their hair?

For me, I wouldn't put Metallica as a choice.  Or Anthrax, or any of the "speed metal" bands.  Reason?  "Speed metal" never charted.  Never went Top 40, and to me, THAT is what qualifies a band for this type of list.  Mainstream popularity.  But others have their own opinions and their own preferences, and they're more than welcome to submit those choices to this list.  They just can't be surprised if they don't garner enough share to finish high on the list.  Metallica had 1 Top 40 hit until thier Black Album.  Yeah, I'd definitely add that to my list, as "One" was phenomenal.  Excellent song.  But Metallica overall?  No, not for me.  Your choices are yours, however.

The only way the Request show is possible is through violating the DMCA.  Add to that P2P so I can get the songs people request that I don't already have.  Yeah, I'm a dirty nasty pirate.  Arr!

Fine. I dare any of you to visit a hard rock/metal board and make the claim that Metallica was a hair band.  ;)

Funnily enough I was going to say exactly the same in the bit I wrote earlier !!.With hindsight I'm actually quite amused by how strongly I feel about this, as much as I did in the 80's when the 'trendies' used to lump all 'metal' together.Saying that because bands featured in a rock mag together means they are all the same style of music is a bit like saying a horror and a comedy film are the same because they appeared together in the same issue of a film magazine !!To keep the peace I really feel if you are talking about rock or metal bands that had hits in the 80's then drop the whole 'Hair' tag and just ask people to vote for their favorite 80's rock songs.Quite frankly I have enough s**t going on in my life at the moment without having to raise my blood pressure any higher by getting frustrated with this ! ;D

Hey, take it up with TVamp and Hairspray... they are the ones who opened the door to such a wide range of bands.  ;)

Actually, if this was strictly a hair metal list, I wouldn't include Motorhead, KISS, Iron Maiden, Metallica and several others that have been listed.
