Subject: What would you classify yourself as?

Written By: jamminoldies on 03/23/03 at 04:11 p.m.

-low class  :-[
-middle class :)
-high class ;D

Well,Let me tell you about my classification.I would consider myself"middle class".I'm far from"low class"and not quite"high class"yet. But,I'm a very snazzy dresser.I wear a nice button-down shirt with blue jeans and black shoes during the week. The jewelry I wear would be considered"middle class".I have rings from when My Brother was alive.some fashion rings & a ring that I bought for $22.The watches I wear wouldn't be considered expensive, but they sure look like it.My Father gave me a Seiko watch $90 retail for Hannukah. He works at Tourneau.Plus, the stuff that I wear outside mostly reflects who I am.Nowadays,I walk down the streets and I see the styles that people wear like Triple Fat Goose,Fubu,Polo,Rocawear,Leather Jackets,etc....I may not have a job yet but I do have a good sized bank account that will keep me happy.I may not be independent but I have a Mother and Father that will help me with the stuff that I purchase.Like for today,I went to Burlington Coat Factory and bought a Leather Jacket for $140,with my own money, which is good. And,that concludes my classification for today.  ;D

I'm very middle class, because I am..and I don't know why    ???

Guess the same reasons you mentioned, like not being too low class. And sometimes I like to dress as if I were poor, seriously, there are days when I wear bedroom slippers and jeans to the supermarket, and I actually like it!  :D

But then other times I like to be alot more high classy.

Somewhere between middle and high class.  I'm not extremely wealthy, but I like nice things.  8)

In some sense, I don't fit into any class; I'm too educated for lower class, too different for middle and nowhere near (and glad of it) high class.  I grew up in a life that fell way below the poverty belt, but my income now places me firmly in middle class land (a strange land indeed).

Clothing?  I could care less about labels.  I actually avoid them; I refuse to be a walking advertisement for some designer.  I don't like shopping for clothes and shoes and such (I know blasphemy for this to come from a woman), but I'm happily spending $210 to go skydiving in June.  I don't buy things just to impress other people, I buy what I like.

I think I'm middle class, but that's probably because I live at home with my mama ::)  Now, if I were on my own, considering what I make, I'd probably still be middle class...

LOL Zella!

I came from I guess you could say two opposing families. Ghetto on my mom side and middle/upper on my dads. So, my life is and has always been in halves, so to speak.

Now I would consider myself middle of the road, but nowhere near high class/rich. I work for my money, it doesn't work for me, sad to say.  :(

My Father, on the other hand, had just enough money and influence to feel uncomfortable in this farming community, lol. Probably why he worked as a grease monkey the last few years of his life and never wore anything fancier than blue jeans.  ;D He had class, I think because of this. :)

I may not own a cell phone myself but My Mother pays my bill for me while I use it.(It's a Motorola)

I may not have a palm pilot,MP3 player or boombox but I'm pretty happy of what I own right now.

I have a good bank account, money in my envelopes, inexpensive jewelry to wear(but not too expensive).I sometimes wear my $140 London Fog Leather Jacket that My Mother and Father helped me buy.You could act like a high class person if you have things around the house to wear.  ;D

I was just being goofy when I said that.  Personally, I think this thread is pretty insulting.  I don't think it is anyone business here how we live or what we classify ourselves to be.  Therefore I was looking at it as more of a joke.  You know I got MUCHO repect for you Dag! ;) :-*

I never really thought of it.  Growing up, we had what we needed, but not much else.  Now, I don't have to watch my pennies, but still won't buy something unless it's on sale.  I guess I would classify myself (and my family) as "comfortable."  But, then again, my husband is a college-educated white man. ;)

Dig it!! Thats one BIG problem with this country (this world for that matter) Putting people in "classes" depending on the size of their wallet, what clothes they wear, or how many things they have, has always been a sore subject with me. I know this is supposed to be a lighthearted thread, but this is a dead serious subject.

Yeah, but the intent wasn't for this to be taken too seriously here. It's a very superficial question.

I'll answer by saying I "classify" myself as "high class", whether or not I have the money and property to back it up. Why? Because I hold myself in high regard.  ;) :)

By local standards I'm probably 'Middle class'
This country doesn't have lower class any more (although there are people who can't afford x,y,& z)
I can't be upper class, that is only available by birth.

Personally, I don't give a f**k, I judge people by what they are, not how they were born!

LOL!  MissInformation, you make it sound as if we were "separated at birth".

I too, am too highly educated to be lower-class, but too poor to be middle class.

And like Hairspray, I am proud to say I have the good manners, and high regard for my background to say I have "high class".

My mom has always described our economic standing as "working poor".  That is, we work hard for our living, usually in blue-collar occupations, and have all the necessities of life, but few of the luxuries (like several-hundred-dollar video game systems, or a "new" car.  All the cars owned by family members were 'pre-owned' and 'pre-loved' ).

I'm the first one of the family to attend college, and I'm trying hard to be the first one to graduate.  Everyone else is self-educated.

I am also laxed in buying new clothes. So What if I see people wearing new shoes, pants or shirt. It doesn't bother me.In my workshop, people sometimes dress like the homeless. You can almost sense that by the way they have no belt for their pants and shows their butt crack, some of them even have shirts that stick out. :P I'm far from that.I dress conservatively.I don't wear any FUBU,BOSS or ROCAWEAR items.I wouldn't be caught dead wearing that.I like the way I dress.very professional.

Thanks again for the advice. ;D

I just can't see myself wearing these while walking down the street to my workshop in the city.I feel I would get picked on which is not good.I'm a professional person which means buttoned-down shirt, black or blue pants, argyle socks & black shoes.Jewelry:fashion ring and a gold Seiko that I got for Hannukah in 1996 from My Father.I also have 6 other watches on my desk.some of them need repairing.  ;D

"an out of work teacher - no class" ;D

This has been very entertaining, but a really serious subject.  So to introduce a bit  of sobriety into this wonderful levity, imo it is unfortunate that we in the US have such a poor understanding of class.  The  original post posses three classes, higher, middle, low.  What about the working class?  James Loewen, in Lies My Teacher Told Me talks about an experiment he and some students did.  One team driving around in an old, beat up car, the other in a nice new one.  Both waited as lights changes  from red to green, timing how long it took for those behind to blow their horns.  The beat up cars got beeped FOUR times faster than the nice cars - A reflection of class?  I don't want to throw cold water on the fun, but class is a serious issue.
Now to answer the origianal question, I consider my self a working class intellectual (whatever the hell that is).  I worked my way through college in a factory (we made gasoline hose).  My mother was Rosie the Riviter - literally, and my dad was in the Coast Guard, and at the invasion of Normandy.  And after the war, a working stiff - literally.  I remember him coming home from work in so much pain that the poor guy could'nt even eat dinner.  Man, that still hurts.  Don't get me wrong.  I appreciate the wit on this thread, but it is bitter sweet.

I would have to say that I am very middle class.  I am far too casual of a person to be considered upper class.  I make too much and we don't have any kids to make us lower class.  I don't mean that badly, I am just saying that we have a lot more disposable income than those with children.  Also, I've never really been one for labels.  Although, I do like Kate Spade hand bags.  But in my defense, I don't own one...

Hi Don,

An MP3 player is a device where you can download music from a CD burner and play it on a small item called an MP3 where you can store 200 or more songs with over 20 hours of music.I'm thinking of getting this but I might wait on it.I've got to learn how to burn music. :-/

I would say I'm working class sitting between Low and Middle classes. Except for the fact that like pig-pen in Peanuts comics, everytime I get dressed up, five minutes later I am in need for a shower and re-dress. This brings me down towards the lower class level.
