Subject: If you could crueling name a child.....

Written By: Mrs._Race on 04/01/03 at 05:20 p.m.

I have the first name of Autumn, and as a child I heard all the season jokes as well as anything with a month.  To top it all off I occasional get called Amber, April, Dawn and Heather.
Now as an adult, I like my name.

What makes me think of this topic is that my husband, Mr. Race Bannon, is always coming up with new ways to mess the minds of our future children.  But in a lot of ways a name could really make or break the psyche of a person.

My personal favourites are:
1) Velvetta
2)  Bunny
3)  Guy (I mean really, what's the point)
4)  Trixi

What would you name them?

- Babydoll: I worked with a person named like that :P

- Boya and Boyb: This has to be an urban legend, but the mother of these twins named them after the labels on their maternity-ward cribs: "Boy A" and "Boy B" because she thought the hospital picked the childrens' names :P

- James Bond: I thought he was joking until he showed ID :P

- Kimberly Clark: She was my lab partner in bio lab. She was very pretty and very friendly and had a weird name that made me chuckle :P

- Dam Bich: Those crazy crazy Vietnamese. I ran to the other side of the building to show the other kids that there was a person named "Dam Bich" :P

- Misty Spray: She also goes by the name "Starla" and it was all official :P Is she related in any way to... Hair... Spray ??? :P

- I've seen a couple of Madonnas and Michael Jacksons too :P :P

- Ima Bugg: This one also has to be an urban legend since I didn't see the Nordic woman that carried this name, but the other kids called her "June" :P

- April May: Yes, she exists - and she lives in Irvine :P

- Simion: I think that's the way they spelt it. Good god, who would name their kid THAT?! He is left open for soooo many pot-shots :P

- Pansy: On a guy... :P :P :P :P :P :P :P

- Espin: Guess what the father was watching when this one was conceived ::) :P

- Cledus and Zed: Yup, people still get named like that :P :P

- Aloha Red: True. I'm not lying. This girl's name sounds like a crayon colour :P

- Rocklin Cave: And we called this guy "Rocky" :P Cool guy too...

- I've seen some funked-out Malaysian, Indonesian, and Thai names that are at least 25 letters long :P

This doesn't surprise me. My grandmother met a woman who named her daughter Female~pronounced Fa-Ma-Lee. Same reason. The hospital had already named her. ::)

Reminds me of an old joke.  There was this country where children had to be named shortly after birth.  A woman had just given birth to twins and the father was unconscious, so his brother, a practical joker, named the two, a boy and a girl.  The girl was named Denise.  The boy?  Denephew!

In my town, there was a family with the children named after cars. There was Cadillac, Buick, Mercury, Lincoln, and another one, can't remember that one. They were all tougher than nails (still are) so you wouldn't dare make fun of their names.

A gal I worked with at one time had decided to name her daughter Chlamydia. I asked her why and she said it sounded pretty, she had heard it on tv or something.I told her what it meant and she changed her mind. ;D

Well, my brother, who is 36 but still living in the 70's, wants to name his first son Evel.(He has already named their cats Mopar and Hemi)  Friends of theirs call their son "Quattro" (his legal name is blah blah IV).  My cousin married a girl named Sandy Beach.  And, while I was working for an insurance co, we used to find all kinds of interesting names.  Example is the Sweet family.  The daughters were named Really, Very, Truly, and Always.  And, we also got a claim for a Mr. Dick Head.  We used to keep them in a file, until the manager found out and told us we could get in serious trouble.  I could go on forever with this one.  Oh, and my favorite is a girl my dad used to date.  Her bday was Dec 25 & her name was Candy Kane ;D

I wanted to name one of our sons Clark, but his best friend's last name is Clark and his first name is our last name so they would have been opposites. ;)

This isn't two funny names for one person but it still kinda fits. When I was a kid my married neighbors' names were Freddy Pancake and Sandy Butter-Pancake.  :) I heard on the news a few nights ago about a local (KY) woman having a baby while her husband was in Iraq. She's in her early 20's and her name was Anita Hearty-Dick. :o She used the hyphenated maiden and married name. Why? ??? Why would you do that?? My favorites are the Tom Thompson’s and the Andy Anderson names. Are people loco? Are there so few names that the kid has to have a double name? People are crazy!

I think Frank Zappa takes the cake on naming his kids. Dweezel and Moon Unit. Like, come on. Those poor kids. But I guess if you are the son/daughter of Frank Zappa, you can deal with it.

Where I used to work, we used to go through all the "famous" people who worked there. We had a George Burns, James Stewart (actually I think two of them), John Glenn, Janet Jackson (poor girl was always called "Nasty") Dale Evans (a male no less). I think there were more but that is all I can remember.

I went to school with a James Brown and a Chris Evans (For non-Brits he's a Radio/TV presenter and married to Billie Piper)

At my college there's aPsych teacher called Jo King. And her sister is called Fay King. How harsh were their parents!

Also, generally in Greek families (probably in many other cultures too) the first son is usually named after the Garndfather. That means, in my dads family side in Cyprus there's about 20 lads called 'Mark', and a few 'Markellas'! Bet you can imagine what family get-togethers are like when we go to Cyprus!

Let's see. I have a cousin named Sebastian Igor, who named his son Sebastian Wolfgang. I also have a cousin named Thyme (born to hippy parents in the early 70s). My best friend had an aunt named Nelvalene Avenel Tilly. I also know some people who named their daughters Ocean and Dakota. I went to school with a girl named Schawanna, who had a younger sister Fegina.

My grandfather had a cousin named Henry Plantagenet Eppley.

A real laugh can be had going census records in the 1800s. One West Virginia family I found named their children Florida, Nevada, Montana, Louisiana, Missouri and Idaho.

And in the mid-1800s in Cornwall you will find a lot of boys named Abednego, Melchesidec and Mahalshalalhashbaz.

i would say that the worst name for a girl is christine.  no offence to any other christines/christinas here, i'm just not a fan of that name.  (could be the fact that i'm stuck with it...)

i know a kid named edward ward too.  and yes, when he gets paged to the office, they do say, "ed ward to the office." ;D

in my biology class, there's a guy from a super italian family whose name is gaetano (or something like that).  we call him gino, but he often gets called "gina"... :D  he takes it well, though.

This is funny, although a bit off the thread - mea culpa

In Brazil, race is defined as a continuum, with like 40 different classifications - you can be a "black coffee, or a coffee with milk" unlike here with our bi-polar definition.  A Brazilian sociologist explained this by asserting that in Brazil they did in fact create a very mixed population - the Catholic Portugese were accepting of black women "out of marriage", while the up tight Calvanists of British America were not.  He goes on in that same vien.  One student asked me what I thought of this theory.  I said "I call this the pen!s theory of history, and I think it is all wet."  The class roared, I turned as red as a beet, folded my notes, and said "that's it for today!"   :-[  One of my most embarrasing moments ever.  ;D

Fun to look back though.

Never, ever, ever, name your kids:

Hubert

Buford

Bocephus

Adolph

*or

Attilla

...no matter what your last name is.

Never name your son Clark Kent.  Or Sue.  (a boy named Sue?  Yeah, I know it was a song, but it doesn't work in the real world.)

Can't think of much bad for girl's names, but I'm sure with a little thought, I'll come up with something.

My hubby went to school with a boy named Michael Jackson.

There's a Richard Head in our phone book...poor guy.

My sister wanted to name her son Justin Case, but after she got married and had kids, we convinced her that they'd get beat up enough over the last name "Kitchen".  I kid you not!

My brother is engaged to a girl who named one son from her first marriage Chase.  Or was it Chance?  I keep confusing it, but either way, WHY?!

We talked my niece out of letting my sister name her baby...Cherokee Cheyenne.  I told her to pick a tribe or risk being hated in 10 years.  They went with Cherokee Rose.  I call her Kiki, 'cuz it can't sound any worse.  Her son's name?  Damien.  WTF?!

Quoting:And they had a big plant in the office that kept saying "FEED ME SEYMOUR" ::)End Quote

The way you state this, with that particular smiley on the end, indicates that you do not believe the comment, with the smiley indicating " ::) Yeah, right."

Perhaps a better choice would have been "Let me guess, they had a big plant in the office that kept saying 'FEED ME SEYMOUR'  ;D"  Stated similar to this, I would have taken it in a far less serious vein than reading a comment that comes across with an attitude of "liar," which yours seemed to.

I'm not "looking to be insulted" thank you very much.

And John H?  Grow up.  Take your liberal Vs. Conservative BS and go back to your 2000's forum where you can feel free to ask all the questions you want and ignore the answers.

OK I just remembered this one.My phsics tutor at college came from the same village as the actress Diana Dors and apparently she arrived one day to open a village fete. The vicar was meant to announce her by her real name but was bad at remembering names so he decide the way he would recall it was by the fact it was a rude word with an 'L' in it.Basically he announced her as the girl local people would recall as 'Diane Clunt'.Diana Dors then took the stage and thanked him graciously but said her name was actually 'Diana Fluck'.

I heard of this guy (didn't know him) with the first name of Thomas. His middle name was Thomas. And yes, you can guess what his last name was. So, his full name was Thomas Thomas Thomas. Talk about lack of imagination on his parents' part.

Well, there use to be a boy in my 7th and 8th grade class whose name was Miguela, but who pronounced it Migail. He was offended every time he was called his name as spelled.
I also knew a woman I worked with whose name was Tasha, but her mother spelled it Tarshua.
And some guy at college got a laugh from the name "Erin Hole" when he read it from the freshman directory.

Since everyone is talking about people that they know with unfortunate names....I dated a guy named Peter Peterson and his dad had the same name.  I thought that was just redundant.  He told me one time that his dad's friends called him "Re-Pete".

I went to school with identical twins named Peter and Paul.  They had a younger sister.

Her name was Michelle.

All everyone ever heard was "Why didn't your parents name her Mary?".

I think the parents deliberately avoided the name of Mary.  :P
