Subject: I Feel Numb...

Written By: 80sTrivia on 04/07/03 at 08:04 p.m.

So, I went to the doctor today. For the past several months, I've been experiencing a tingling sensation in both of my hands, accompanied by pain and stiffness. I've also been waking up several times during the night because my hands have been swelling and falling to sleep. Well, the doctor diagnosed me with the dreaded Carpal Tunnel Syndrome in both of my wrists!  Apparently, I've been spending too much time typing away here! Not to mention writing my books, gossip column, articles and book reviews for the newspaper. So now I have to wear splints on both wrists, 24/7 for the next month or so. Also have to ice both wrists twice daily and get a cortisone shot once a week. I've been instructed not to spend so much time typing on the computer! Hopefully, the treatment will work and I will not require surgery!  At any rate, I might not be typing as many messages as normal around here, but I think this place will be okay!  Anyone else have experience with Carpal Tunnel?

OH No!!!  Sorry to hear it, 80's trivia.  Carpal Tunnell is no fun at all.

My sister-in-law has it very bad.  She cannot type at all.  She has a voice program on her computer...she talks, and what she says is printed on the screen.

A fella I used to work with had a mild case of it in one arm.  He had to wear a brace, but it didn't take large chunks out of his workday.

I'm keeping you in my thoughts and prayers, and I hope the treatment your doctor has given you will work.  Surgery is no fun. :-/

So sorry you have to go through all that. I do hope you recover quickly. You'll be missed and thought of everyday.

We'll throw you a virtual party upon your return. That's a promise.  :)

I know what you're going through, though I only have it in 1 wrist.  I was doing data entry at the time, though and it was a pain in the butt.  My thoughts are with you. :-*

I get a bit of numbness in my left hand occasionally, which is wierd, since I mouse with my right. So far I've been fortunate. I did however, permanently screw up some soft tissue or something in my neck/shoulder a few years ago while doing last minute taxes on my calculator for three days straight. Uh oh! It's almost April 15th again, isn't it? Oooops! :(

Bummer about the carpal tunnel, but I must admit I thought it was something worse when you wrote about a tingling sensation and numbness. I wish you good health. From now on, stick to short, one-word replies to let us know you're doing well :)

BTW, if you've never had a cortisone shot, they hurt worse in the wrist than anywhere else!!  Ask for a smaller needle, if possible.  That's what my ortho did when I almost passed out at the first one.

my mom has CTS...i guess she doesn't have it really bad or anything, because she says she's still able to type after her fingers go numb...although she can't decorate cakes anymore because of it, which is kind of sad, because she really enjoys doing it. :(  now that i'm all off track, good luck with your treatment!  hope you feel better soon. :)

Thanks for all the advice and kind words, guys. I'll definitely ask for the smaller needle, Cheerleader! Today was the first day in months that I haven't experienced any pain or tingling in my hands, so maybe the therapy is working. The doctor also gave me this large ball of silly putty-like material to play around with to strenghten my wrists. And I am definitely going to look into that voice activated software for my computer! My doctor has also sugested electro-magnetic therapy as an alternate treatment, so I might try that as well. Again, thank you guys for being the supportive group of friends!

It worked for me! They place these small patches with little electrodes and literally send repetitive shocks to your needed areas. It feels weird at first, but you get used to it. You'll have these little red bumps leftover from the day's session, but they go away almost immediately.

It costs a bundle, so make sure your insurance covers it well.  ;) :)

Edited to add that I preferred this treatment over the cortisone shot for obvious reasons, but also because the 1st (and only) shot caused a small pea-sized inflammation (like a small cyst) on the site of the injection and it discolored my skin on the same spot. :-/ The doc stated it was one of the possible side effects. It took about a year before the cyst went away and the skin returned to it's proper color.

Best of recovery to you 80s Trivia.  Carpal Tunnel is common in the seafood industry, I've seen a lot of it and it can be treated and healed well.
Just remeber, avoid the "Hand Jive", which is a pretty silly dance anyway.

I'm sorry to hear that, 80sTrivia!  :(  Try to take it easy so those wrists will recover faster.  And please come back just as soon as you can!

I'm glad that the electro-magnetic therapy worked for you, Hairspray. It sounds so much more pleasant that receiving a nasty shot, which I have to have tomorrow!  :o Again, thanks for the thoughts and well-wishes, everyone! :)
