Subject: Most Recent CD(s) You've Purchased?

Written By: lebeiw15 on 04/21/03 at 02:27 p.m.

I know I did a thread on this awhile back, but I wanted to ask again:  What are the most recent CDs you've received or purchased? (for yourself that is).  I just got back from Target, and bought "80s Pop Hits".  It was $9.99 for 3 CDs so I thought that was good.  Others I have gotten/burnt lately are:

The Police--Synchronicity
Billy Joel--Glass Houses
Dave Matthews Band--Under the Table and Dreaming

How about you?

Synchronicity. One brilliant album, that.

The most recent album I purchased was Keeping The Summer Alive / The Beach Boys, a twofer with the two Beach Boys albums from 1980 and 1985 respectively. The former is praised in their later career, the latter derided as the worst in their career. Personally, I love both of them. I can't remember how much they cost...

Yes it is.  I don't know why I didn't check it out sooner (I just burnt it on Sunday).  It would be a perfect album if not for the song "Mother."  Maybe I should've just left it off while I was burning it...

Last CD I bought was at my friends CD launch a couple of weeks ago.

Gina Williams, Into The Night

available now at www.78records.com.au

She writes her own jazz, a funky kinda mellow sound.  But she can also belt out some big sounds in covers like Crying In The Chapel.

I have known her for nearly 20 years so it was such a proud moment to see her debuting with such a great cd.

a lot of it is similar to what their last album was, it's mostly all slow.  the cover of "is she really going out with him?" was nice, but some of the other songs seem to drag on a little.  "in through the doggie door" is mildy amusing, and the guitar in it is awesome.  if you liked their last album, then i think you should get it (buy it used, i don't think it's worth the standard $15)...but definitely replace 14:59, it's better. :)

That's the thing, I didn't go to Best Buy...Target and Media Play were closer :).

I actually found AFI at Target for a good price, but decided not to buy it because I ended up finding CDs that were either a better deal or CDs I wanted more....I also almost, but didn't, buy White Stripes (both the self-titled and "Elephant"), "Sensational 70s", Finch "What It Is To Burn", Punk-O-Rama 7 and Punk-O-Rama 8 (both good prices, but when I found Vol. 7 it was too late, I had already used up all my money , and I figured I could get Punk-O-Rama 8 somewhere else, and for a cheaper price.

Wal-Mart has good CD prices, except sometimes the selection isn't that great (especially if you like CDs with explicit content).  Best Buy has very good selection but the prices are a little more expensive sometimes.  Target is pretty good too.

Used CD stores are good too, I have gotten CDs with very little or no scratches and were in very good condition.  It just depends on where you go and what you buy I guess.

I don't get CDs at Kmart or Barnes and Nobel--I get the same ones at Wal-Mart for five or six bucks cheaper.

I traded in Audioslave, Interpol, "Now 8", and another CD I bought that I didn't like, got $12.50 store credit for it (I was disappointed with the price especially after seeing the same Audioslave CD selling for $13.99 at Best Buy before we traded them in), but still I was satisfied with the price because most CDs only get a $1.00 or so, and I got a little over $3 for each.

BTW, recently, I've bought Glassjaw "Worship & Tribute" (which I've hunted for for awhile, finally found it at f.y.e, for $19!!!!!! ....and then a month later I found it at Best Buy for $14 but it was obviously too late...

and then I also found a good deal for System Of A Down "Toxicity" - $11.99, amongst CDs in a place priced $15-$20 for each CD.

While looking for Glassjaw "EYEWTKAS" (initials for the album title) or Motion City Soundtrack (both of which I couldn't find) at Target, I did find Ra "From One"....I had just discovered Ra's music (one song, but still, it was awesome so I expected the rest of the album to be)...

It's an okay CD, not the best, but I think I'll definitely enjoy it more than the 4 CDs I traded in the other day.

Last week on an impulse I bought "Lights Out" by Lisa Marie Presley, on the basis of the title track which I'd heard on the radio. The rest of the tracks sound competent but not great to me so far...maybe it'll grow on me.

Prior to that I bought "Derek and Clive Come Again", which I hadn't heard since I was about 16 on a borrowed vinyl copy. I thought it was hilarious at 16, now it just doesn't make me laugh.

And then before that it was "Elephant" by The White Stripes, which is great.

Yeah true - but the older ones are pretty good. I went to Cyprus on holiday and found 'Now 24' in the barigan bin for £6!! It's from Spring '93 - got some good stuff on it.

I own:

Now 24
Now 29 (by far the best 'Now' in my collection!)
Now 35
Now 38
Now 41
Now 46
and also 'Now 1993, 1994 and 1995' but they've stopped making the 'year' ones now :(

I'd love to own 'Now 1'. I think it's from 1987 or something!!

Anyways, the last CD's I bought I got in the HMV sale last week. I bought 'Louder than Bombs' and 'The Smiths' by The Smiths ;D and '100 Broken Windows' by Idlewild - all for £16, what a bargain!!

Oh, okay... you see, I don't think the ones in the US are by Virgin--Sony Music, if I'm correct (that's what my "Now! That's What I Call Christmas" album says anyway) and they started their series in '98 or '99 and are up to 10 now, I think.  Same concept, though. :)

You're right, a lot of the songs on there are awful. The first one I ever remember being released was 42... and then I thought they might stop or something once they got to 50. It's not so much nowadays that they're becoming worse, but what tends to be happening is that a lot of the tracks are either there through virtue of import, or are tracks being released soon.

I'll admit to listening to a couple of the most recent ones a lot... I've got most, if not all of them, on tape and copied CD somewhere, I'll try and dig them out sometime

As for how many of them I have bought, I think the answer is all.

55 had few tracks of real interest to me, though it's interesting now to see bands like OTV and Girls Aloud, post-split and post-anger respectively on the collection. Can't say it's the best compilation... but good for what it does. I did have quite a few of these tracks recorded on taped single anyway at any time...

I did much prefer Now 54: it contained a lot of the post-Fame Academy material, which, as anyone will agree with me, is probably 20 times better than Poo Idol. (Not a misspelling) Besides, there were a couple standout tracks that I really had to get for... again, many I owned on single beforehand. As others have said before me, CD2 wasn't the best...

53... Terrible, terrible, terrible songs, but then, that's what was in the charts at the time, and, though my techno doppelganger will admit to liking the opener of Heaven, the rest wasn't up to that same level.

I'm quite proud of having all of these, no doubt some of them, in about... lots of years time will be worth something...

I've been looking for the following CDs, unable to find them at stores like Media Play, Best Buy, Target (which sucks as a music store if you're not looking for a Top 40 CD), and other such places.

- Dolour "Suburbiac"
- 20 Minute Loop "20 Minute Loop"
- 20 Minute Loop "Decline Of Day"
- Ozma "Rock And Roll Part 3"
- Vic Thrill "CE-5"
and suprisingly,
- Weezer "Pinkerton"
- Weezer "Blue Album" (actually I did find this at Wal-Mart one time, but it was like 16 bucks...plus I've heard they'll be re-releasing this album with a bonus track or two...)

Do you like this CD?  I checked it out from my local library and was amazed at how much I liked it.  I kind of started hating MB20 over the past couple years but liked "Unwell" and "Bright Lights" so decided to check out the CD.  I'm glad I did because I've been listening to it constantly I like it so much!

Same here! I wasn't crazy about MB20 at first, but I decided "What the heck" and burnt it from my friend since she let me borrow her whole CD case and pick n choose which ones I wanted to burn. I was actually pretty satisfied with the album. I love "Bright Lights" and "You're So Real", as well as "Disease".

its a fairly good compilation of his work up to 1999 (so nothing off his last two albums...which stinks cause I wanted "45", but whatever), its a prtty good glance at his early 80s and late 70s work (but doesnt have "The only flame in town" for some reason)....but at $25+ , and two CDs, I guess its worth it for his middle and later stuff, but theres no excuse for not having his first two albums (My aim is true and This yeears model)..those two are amazing albums that every song on is great (and Armed forces, Truth, Get Happy and Imperial Bedroom arent bad either)...........

I was a little disinchanted with Smiley Smile, but that might be because of the number of times that Ive had SMiLE on replay over and over again....I just cant except any reworking....maybe I need a few more listens....

the others were beyond amazing...Sunflower was incredably spectatular....I was surprised about that....Wild Honey gets alot of criticism, but I say it was pretty dang good, and Surfs up was a great final effort before they got sucky......I need to listen to SMiley Smile again......

but the Bonus tracks make it all worth it

Having Smile on replay is a great thing. I haven't heard it for a long time, and there are some things that I forget about it (is the version of Wonderful on Smiley Smile the quick-stop version with Brian on the Harpsichord in D flat major, for example? That version is available on the Good Vibrations Box Set, and has some extra words (very Van Dyke Parks).

I hardly listen to it enough, but Wild Honey, for all the criticism, has some great tracks on it, Country Air (hear the squeaking of the instruments in the bridge). Others, too. I'd Love Just Once To See You, which is very much a statement of Brian's simple genius.

And, as for the final track, Surf's Up, at least four and a half years old at the time of its reworking. One of the most beautiful tracks in the collection.

I don't think it's a case of the albums becoming sucky after Surf's Up.

Being unaware of how much you've heard of it, I don't know how well you know the next two CD's, Carl And The Passions - So Tough and Holland, but, they do validate their own existence by their fabulous track-lists.

A few years ago, I joined Columbia House. Hey, 12 free CDs and you only have to buy 4-was a great deal. And you didn't have to send in those stupid cards every month (I really hated those). Then, my honey (before he was my hubby), said to sign him up-he would get 12 free CDs and I would get 5 free ones for signing him up. Good deal. Then, after we fullfilled the contract on his account, they called. Said that they would cancel out his account-open a new and give him 12 more free ones-good deal again. But they never did cancel out the old account. They kept doing that. At one time we had I don't know how many accounts. A lot of times they have deals-buy one/get 2-3 free-again good deal. Well, most of our accounts (we are down to three) have been fullfilled with the exception of one. So, I just spent I don't know how many hours looking at Columbia House's website trying to order two CDs to fullfill that obligation. But, they have a special, buy one-get 3 free. So I just purchased 8 CDs-total cost, just a bit over $60-including S/H. We still have a few freebees coming on all three accounts and then we are closing them. At this point, I think I got all the CDs that I wanted which Columbia House has. I find they are very limited in what they have. But, you get a lot of free CDs.

What I got was a couple of Foriegner, Buffalo Springfield, Rick Springfield, Blues Brothers, Emerson Lake and Palmer, some Latin music and some Bach. Quite a variety huh?

Most Recent CD-

Antbox (yay!!)
B-Side Babies- Adam and the Ants

Plus all the CDs Lanie did for me
and the Martin Gore CDs that I am currently waiting for thanks to Vile! But I didn't purchase those, friends are good to have!

Most Recent vinyl (if it counts):

Dirk Wears White Sox (1983 release)- Adam and the Ants
Genesis- Invisible Touch

I wouldn't have put the vinyl one down if I wasn't so excited about getting Dirk...! And dirt cheap too!
