My nephews are the same - they absolutely love him and call him Steve like their best mates.  All the kids seem to love him (especially boys).

Having said that, I think most Aussie's (grown ups anyway) think he's a bit of a .......... how can I say it - um, a bit of a wally (that's putting it nicely).  He is very energetic and enthusiastic for what he does, but he is so over the top.  Please believe me when I say that most Aussies don't use the word "crikey" in every sentence ::)

By the way Fuss - I like the photo!

I actually don't mind him. People get annoyed however when they travel to Australia Zoo (Steve and Terri Irwin run it) and for some reason they're not there. I can't see the difference between him and Dame Edna Everage.

Hi there AJ - long time no see on board !

What I was meaning to say is that I don't mind HIM per se, it's what he represents, and to me that is the Paul Hogan image of the 70's Aussie Ocker....it was alright for Paul Hogan, he was in the 70's.

But to me, Steve Irwin portrays the image to the world, and that's the bit I can do without....it takes us back about 25 years... :'(

The difference to me between Irwin and Everidge is that Dame Edna clearly takes the mickey out of herself in everything she does, yet when I see Steve Irwin I see him wanting us to believe him.

Call it cultural cringe, but it's obvious that many see him that way.  That's the bit I dislike.... :(

I must be abnormal - as an australian I DESPISE Paul Hogan.  I think he is a WWWWWW (yes the other W word).

But Steve - well I respect the fact that he was raised in a family of Australia's foremost reptile experts.
I respect that he has grown his fathers reptile park into an enormous sanctuary that helps rehabilitate and rehouse reptiles, and educates tourists at the same time.
I respect the fact that he worked out that by becoming a TV character host - he would make heap of money that he could then pour into the Zoo and to his rehab/rehouse programs.  He just spent a fortune travelling to a Pacific island to catch a rogue croc that was killing villagers.

My dad has been up to the zoo several times in the past few years (its only a few hours north for him) and Steve has been there each and every time - dad was even filmed for a tv ep.

To the person who felt that people get disapointed when the travel to the Zoo to find Steve not there (AJ ?) - Steve owns and runs the zoo - yes - but he also travels the world lecturing on ecology and landcare and reptile care, as well as filming his show and other docos around the world.  So nobody expects him to be there at the zoo 365 days a year.  You go to a zoo to see the animals - not the owner.

What I hate most sometimes about being an Aussie - is the incessant Tall Poppy Syndrome that is so prolific here.  For those that dont know the term - it's where we (or more - the press) love an actor, singer, fashion designer, whatever - until they hit the big time overseas or commit a slight indiscretion and then we rip them to shreds in the press.  Its happened to everyone over the years.  Then a little further down the track it becomes "cool" to like them again. Think Kylie, Jason, Elle, Mel, Russell, etc etc etc.  So what the press here does to Steve is just the same as it has done to everyone else over the years.  Its like its a sin to go off and get a successful career.

Big deal - he is a bigger than life, exhuberant, over excited, larrikin - but he he doing a job and he is doing it well.  And he is far more exciting to watch than the old Harry Butlers of the 70's. (and no I dont have anything against Harry himself - dad use to travel with him - but he wasnt very exciting as a tv presenter).

Just so as I am not totally misunderstood, BMG....I was thinking about some of these things today....

I DO have the utmost respect for the things he does in the field in which he works - he is clearly not just out to make a fast buck by being a 'self-appointed expert' as many do.

And yes, I also agree with your comments about tall poppy syndrome, and this country just loves it.

Nonetheless, I stand by my earlier comments....I do not like his obvious over-ockerism, sorry !

What you mean you don't all wrestle crocodiles before you go to work  ??? ???

Seriously the old Tall Poppy Syndorme is alive and well in the U.K too.We only seem to love someone when they are down, the minute someone gets successful the claws come out.

So would I!  In fact, I might even pay money to see that!   ;)

I respect the work Steve Irwin does, working to save endangered reptiles and other animals, and raise awareness....I just can't deal with his over-the-top TV personality.

I wonder sometimes if he is like that off-camera.

Other times I just want to shoot him with a tranquilizer dart full of Ritalin. ;)

Totally agree !!!  I have only seen the commercials and they are bad enough to make me never ever see the movie.

Xenakat - sorry I havent yet worked out how to put multiple quotes in my posts !!!  I hate to tell you this - but that isnt a "TV" personality - that IS his personality !!  Nothing he does is fake or put on for TV !!!!  Scarey I know !!  He is really just an overexcited lad !!

Banasy - I would PAY to see that fight - as long as Steve got to anialate Hoges !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Fussb - you certainly dont have to apologise to me for who you like and who you dont like !!!!  Unfortunately - growing up in so many outback towns I encountered so many larger than life characters that Steve seems really quite laid bak and tame compared to some of them !!!!  Having said that I did say to a friend at work the other day that I am physically attracted to Steve's burly blonde beefiness - as long as he shut his mouth !!!!!!!!!!

I must say the guy is a bit over the top, but hey, in the end it all boils down to entertainment (I guess).  I saw him tonight terrorising Eddie Maguire with a snake on the Logies, beautiful work!  But really, anyone who thinks Aussies are really like that do not have their heads screwed on straight, so I don't really worry 'bout it....

However, with that said, there is one guy that really p*sses me off, and that would be Russell Coight.  I know it's all a bit of a send-up, but that guy really gets under my skin!  Anyone agree?

darnit Holy - I always thought I was first in the queue - d'ya mean half of the QLD females are in front of me ??????  How the heck can I compete with that !!!!

Spike - I love Russell Coight solely because he is taking the mickey out of the shows I grew up on in the 70's - Harry Butler, Malcolm Douglas, The Leyland Brothers etc etc.  Oooh and the Logies snake unfortunately missed Eddie (shame) but it did bite whatshisface from Channel 10 Sports - he recieved a bite in the unmentionables.

Gecko - hehehehe - my 80's taste in men scares me these days - I mean  they used more hairspray and wore more make up than I did !!!  But the boys I find attractive these days are the big blonde bulky ones - examples - Steve himself, the guy in McLeods Daughters Alex Ryan (Aaron Jeffery) - specially when he has no shirt on, Patrick Thompson from Groundforce sigh, Scott Cummings who was the full forward for West Coast Eagles - not sure where he moved to.
