Subject: For Some Of The New Members. Profanity Is Rampant.

Written By: Hairspray on 05/27/03 at 00:31 a.m.

There are two or three of the newer members who cannot seem to post without a profane word. Folks, have some consideration. I will start out-right deleting posts instead of modifying them. I don't have time to waste with needless disregard for the rules. Profane words masked with * are also no longer tolerated.

Forum Rules

ChuckyG provides these forums as a service to discuss our favorite decades.

These rules have been posted in order to allow all participants to interact in a friendly environment.

The following posting guidelines are in effect for all forums:

Transmit any unlawful, harmful, threatening, abusive, harassing, defamatory, vulgar, obscene, hateful, racially, ethnically or otherwise objectionable content.

*Harassment

Harassment occurs when a user targets another individual to cause distress, embarrassment, unwanted attention, or other personal discomfort. We do not condone harassment in any form. While you may disagree with someone's point of view, personal attacks, or attacks based on a person's race, national origin, ethnicity, religion, gender, sexual orientation, disablement or other such affiliation, are prohibited. If you have a disagreement with someone's point of view, address the subject, not the person.

You may not post or transmit sexually explicit images or other content that is deemed to be offensive.

You may not post or transmit chain letters, pyramid, or money schemes.

*Chain Letters, Pyramid, or Money Schemes

Transmission of chain letters and pyramid schemes of any kind is not allowed in the forums. These materials are considered a nuisance by many users and certain chain letters and pyramid schemes may be illegal.

“Deletable” and/or "Banable" offenses include, but are not limited to the aforementioned list of activities.

We reserve the right to delete your posts and/or ban you from this site without prior warning.

Any and all decisions regarding any violations of these guidelines are final.

Users that are banned will be permanently banned from posting. There is no appeal process once banned.

Umm HS, would it be ok, if a link we post might have language, (i.e. a shockwave or macromedia short like the bomb Bin ladin song)and we state a warning? I wouldnt post things like porn or disgusting sites but as much as I hate to say it profanity is in everything these days. Its very hard to find anything without the grey area matter words like arse, pregnant dog slap in them

I know it's crazy, but the fact of the matter is this site is intended for people of all ages, including kids. We have members which fall into this category.

There should be no material that, when simply clicked by a kid or anyone else, demonstrates any of the situations of which we disapprove in the Forum Guidelines.

There are no loopholes here.

Besides all that, this site would become banned by many programs that track adult content and would significantly lower the site's traffic and exposure.

In short, the answer on your question of links with profanity is no.

Folks, It really isn't too difficult to replace profanity with words that are acceptable, yet equally effective. I know! I do it sometimes.  ;)

No ship!  Well, I'll be flipped by a naffing melonfarmer...

...or something like that ;-)

PS Just to add my pen'rth to what Hairspray's said: what I teach my children is that swearing is the last (or more usually the first) refuge of the verbally incompetent - i.e. to swear merely proves an inadequate vocabulary and is a sign of weakness or stupidity rather than something strong or clever; also if you hardly ever swear, then on the very rare occasion when you do it has much more impact.  So far the lesson seems to have taken...

???I hope this isn't a silly wquestion,but doesn't this site already have a 'swear-check',which makes it impossible for swear words to appear???For example,the word 'butt'is substituted for the a-word,for exampla,and so forth.I just didn't know this was a problem.Just wondering.Cheers!

When I first started coming here a little over a year ago, "naughty" words covered with asterisks ( * ) were allowed because they were rare.

As Philbo said, they made much more of an impact when they were used sparingly.

Now I seem to see them everywhere.

It doesn't bother me that they are no longer allowed.  I've always liked to make up new words and expressions...and if I'm having a tired, lazy, day and can't think of anything to post but swear words...I don't belong here on that day.

I think a lot of people forget there are persons under the age of 18 here.  Most of our younger members are very mature and articulate for their stated ages.  I was suprised more than once when I found out some people's ages.

I know and agree HS.  As you have seen I dont curse much, and when I do its usually quoting someone else. The reason why I ask, is that several times people have posted links that have language or disturbing content.  Those sites I understand. However most sites do not have offensive language yet our favorite groups that we love and hold so dear have it rampant in thier lyrics. I know we can controll our content but its hard when you are trying to quote verbatim to see who sang what song (which this board is famous for) and refer people to other areas or websites where they should go for the information that they seek yet we cannot control the content which is on those sites. Is there somewhere we can meet in the middle, maybe typing in the URL yet not making it an active link?

i got two questions about this Hairspray....one may be a stupid question though...

the stupid one first....what are we considering too far....excuse my use of it, but is "darn" too far?  or "hell"  (im not trying to be a smart as- er, aleck, ::) Im serrious about this question)

the second one, what if we are making reference to a specific song name or something....certain names of songs have swears in them, for instence a certain song by Progedy, or by the MC5, or a bunch of others....(including a cartain parody that I wrote that I make reference too quite a bit)..in the past I have always used astericks to censor the word...is this going to far now?

I just would like to know if I cant discuss certain songs here or stuff....
thank you

If someone wants to know the lyrics for one of Eminem's songs, for example, that person may be referred to a lyrics site or given the lyrics by private message. That way, there would be no open forum issues with profanity.

As far as "what is too far?", my answer is -

If in doubt, leave it out.

I do understand your question about song names and lyrics.

You can make your own creative solution to this problem. Either leave that particular word blank, as in ___________ or make-up a word to put in it's place and make a note of it in your post that the word was edited in order to conform to the Forum Guidelines.

HS

How far are you taking this censorship?  I mean, where is the line drawn?

And there is still the everlasting freedom to Pm, is there a limit to abuse on that?  Can a pm attacker/abuser be reported to someone?

It's not that hard to understand, Mike_Florio. Follow the rules. The Forum Guidelines have always been there and are written as clear as day.

Private messages are not as strictly bound by the Forum Guidelines because we will not monitor private conversations through private messages. That is why they are called private.

However, if someone receives unwanted and/or offensive private messages, they have the option to let us know as soon as possible so we may remedy the problem.

We cannot worry about whether individual posters are going to object, have a problem with or like the rules. Either follow them or:

go to non-moderated forums. There are plenty of them out there. - Forum Guidelines

Hairspray,

Just me here asking a question which links back to what you said before (which I should probably know the answer to anyway). Private Messages: I've never been sure or not whethey they go through some kind of vetting system, or some big server of Instant Messages to (Inbox) and from (Outbox) all users?

I'm guessing the answer is no: you claimed before that they were private messages?

I'm not planning to swear anyone down in private, I'm just wondering the level of control on which you have, given that we don't have a modify button after we've sent it?

Thanks for your time.

Just as an FYI, the PM's will also do the auto-censor thing.  I was trying to send a link to something that had a body part in it, and couldn't figure out why the person I was sending it to couldn't get the link to work.  Turns out, the "offensive" word was changed to "thingy" ;D

some Messageboards you're allowed to curse but some others they don't allow that. Why do they have that rule?  ???

Howard, it is because some messageboards have a lot of children visiting.

I know kids know all the swearwords...and probably use them more than we do.  But they generally don't do it where their parents can hear them.

Parents can and do block their kids from visiting websites that they think are offensive and inappropriate for kids...and that goes for messageboards too.

Moderated boards are places most parents consider a safe place for their kids to go to.

The boards that do allow swearing are mostly adults, and they don't even want kids there for the most part.

I like it here.  There are people of all ages, from all over the world, and the language is clean enough that I can let my 7 year old daughter visit if she wants to.
