The practice is to total the numerical value of a name or word. For example, the name "John Smith".
JOHN = 1 + 6 + 8 + 5 = 20, SMITH = 1 + 4 + 9 + 2 + 8 = 24, 20 + 24 = 44, 44 = 4 + 4 = 8
Explanation:
Determine letter numerical values from chart:
J = 1, O = 6, H = 8, N = 5; S = 1, M = 4, I = 9, T = 2, H = 8
Sum the numerical values of names:
JOHN = 20 and SMITH = 24
Change the values to single digits:
20 = 2 + 0 = 2, 24 = 2 + 4 = 6
The sum of the single digits:
2 + 6 = 8
Interpretation:
The name of "John Smith" has a numerological value of 8. From the Chart of Characteristics of Numbers 8 has the characteristics of material, success, justice.

Wait, I don't understand the 11/33 part. Using my maiden name, I'm a 5, but using my married name, adding up the letters in my last name is 33, but if you add those together and add them to my first name, it comes out 11. So what does that mean?

So my first name would be 2+9+5=16;
my last name would be 3+5+3+5+7=23;
If I do it the one way, 16+23=39 --> 3+9=12
If I do it the other way, 7+5=12
So I guess it works either way...so now what? Am I 1, 2, or 3?
The qualities denoted by 1, 2 and 3 seem to fit me though :)

The sum of the single digits 8+9=17

All I remember about 11, 22, and 33 is that they are "magic" numbers that should not be reduced any further.
