Subject: what makes a good singer?

Written By: Billy_Florio on 06/26/03 at 00:16 a.m.

is a good singer only ones voice?

Heres my question...are people who have horrible voices like Bob Dylan, Neil Young and Dave mAtthews considered good singers, or just good musicians/songwriters.....

what about people that dont have pleasent voices like Mick Jagger, Elvis Costello, Rod Stewart, and Joe Walsh...are they bad singers, or good singers?

should this affect music.....I dont think so......Mick Jagger is still one of the greatest frontmen in my opinion, and Dylan is still a great musician.....

so, what do you guys think?  Are good singers only people who can sing like the backstreet boys?

"Good" is much too relative a term. To some "good" would mean vocal range, intonation, enunciation, etc. What impresses me, personally, is how much "feeling" the singer puts into the song. For example, I play the sax. There are sax players that would get a job in a symphonic orchestra before me, but if a rock or blues band is looking for someone to blow.......I'd put my talents up against anyone. No brag just fact. Catch my drift? One could argue that Pavarotti is "good", and they would be correct, but I'd much rather hear Van Morrison or Bob Seger belt one out!

A good voice is the basic request, but it's not enough.Sometimes you can even forgive the singer a weird-sounding or low-ranging voice. The singer should have feeling in his voice, and he should know how to deliver the songs.
Good examples of such:
David Bowie
Leonard Cohen
Nick Cave
Freddie Mercury
Bono
Elton John
George Michael
Steven Tyler
Sting
Janis Joplin

Get my point?

I'll appreciate anyone who doesn't scream or "over-riff" on their songs. Also the song has to have some kind of point to it. I hate songs that a redundant.

as long as the singer's not whining or have a really squeaky voice, i'm not too particular.  as for lyrics...again, i'm not too particular.

I like all kinds of different singers for different reasons. I couldn't possibly pick one out and say he/she is the best because they are all good in their own particular way.

Bill Withers
Smokey Robinson
Louis Armstrong
Ella Fitzgerald
Layne Staley
David Lee Roth
Glen Danzig
Peter Steele
Johnny Cash

I think a good vocal range and able to sing in harmony/key with the accompanying music are what separates a good singer/vocalist.

Some great vocalists (just my opinion, of course)

Anastacia
Daryl Hall
Sarah Washington
Freddie Mercury
Annie Lennox
Lisa Stansfield
Tracey Thorn (from EBTG)
Martha Wash
