Subject: Songs that Tell Sad Stories

Written By: Criz on 06/26/03 at 09:38 a.m.

This idea just popped into my head as I was listening to 'Two Beds and a Coffe Machine' by Savage Garden. There must be so many songs that seem to tell stories, most of which are sad and emotional. I'm thinkin of making a CD with such songs on. Here are some of my starts:

Savage Garden - Two Beds and a Coffee Machine
Randy Crawford/Charlene - I've Never Been To Me
Plumb - Damaged
Smiths - Hand That Rocks The Cradle

It's the *only* song that brings tears to my eyes... but only since I had children of my own.

Last Kiss - the original
Teen Angel
Tell Laura I Love Her

A rather haunting one, this...you may not have heard the song but I think the lyrics stand up OK on their own...

http://www.yardbirds.org/lyrics/mrzero.html

The song is "Mr Zero" written by the horrifically under-rated Bob Lind...marvellous stuff...

"nervous in the alley" by smash mouth, although you really have to just read the lyrics because the songs much too fast to feel sad...

Not many people would know this...

"Indian Princess" by Monsoon featuring Sheila Chandra

It's the story of a woman who was widowed at a very young age....and pines away for her dead love.  At the end she dies too...but the song doesn't make clear how.

Two of Eminem's songs tell sad stories; Stan and Cleaning Out My Closet. Stan is about an Eminem fan with that name who does not get a reply until he dies. COMC is about Em's childhood and how hard it was. His father left home and his mother was horrible to him.

'Where the wild roses grow' by Kylie Minogue/Nick Cave about a man that kills a woman.

'Honey' by Bobby Goldsboro - Awful as well.

'Tell Laura I love her' by Ray Peterson -  About a man that dies in a racing accident.

I always felt there was something sinister lurking around in the song 'Chirpy Chirpy Cheep Cheep' by Middle of the road. It might be my imagination though.

I read the lyrics to 'Chirpy cheep cheep' and it's just about some bird waiting for it's parents to show up - Instead of 'Little baby bird' (which is in lyrics websites apparently) it sounds very much like 'Little baby Don'. To me that gave it a human edge not a bird edge!

I was listening to that song today. It's actually quite freaky...

Lightning Express, for all of its 4:51, is quite a sad song, as Marian said. It's all about a boy whose mother is dying.

my suggestins:

going to your funeral (pt 1) - Eels
Child Killers - The Delgados
Leave this city - the Sundays
Walk on By - Saint Low (not the more famous 60's song btw)
Rilkean Heart - Cocteau Twins (as that has lyrics, but they have sadder ones without having a comprehensible lyric)

"Barbra Allen". I know Jonni Mitchell (right?) has a version, and so does Andreas Scholl. Originally a Middle-Ages ballad.
