But, wouldn't you think that if they were introduced as something, that's what they would prefer to be called?  If he went by Dave, I'd (or he'd) introduce him as "Dave".  Like my neighbor, he introduced himself to me as "Art".  His real name is Arthur, but he prefers Art (not that I blame him ;D ;))

I usually either get called Rachel or Ruth. (At least I don't get called Ben, although apparently some lady told my mom that I look like Ben.  ??? I was like whatever! Ruth looks morel like Ben than I do!!) My mother told me that if I had been a boy my name would have been William Wallace (and actually not after Braveheart) because my dad's dad's name was William and my mom's dad's name was Wallace. :P Crazy, huh?
