Subject: Ever Feel Like Someone/A Presence Held You Down...

Written By: Hairspray on 08/15/03 at 09:20 p.m.

...In Bed, keeping you from moving? Do you believe in spirits and such?

I'll apologize in advance for such a long post.

Here's my story -

Once upon a time, when I was much younger, I was on vacation in the tropics and I stayed awake through the entire last weekend of it, literally. There I was, exhausted to the point of passing out and not being able to sleep because I had to make my way home: First a boat ride, then a car ride, then a plane, then car again. You get the picture.

Anyway, I finally got home, locked the door and passed right out in my awesome, comfortable bed. I knew I'd be unavailable to the world for a couple of days, for sure.

I slept... and slept... and slept some more. I wasn't sure of the time, but I felt myself becoming alert. I'd wondered how long I'd slept.

When I tried to get up, I couldn't! I couldn't move at all! :o
I felt my heart begin to beat double-time. I felt as if a malicious ghost or spirit was holding me down, preventing me from moving. I couldn't escape it. I couldn't speak, scream, nothing. I was scared. This was really happening!

My hands lay on my chest. I began to try desperately to move my fingers to try and do the sign of the cross, falling back on some older superstitions in my time of utter fear. Well, it also seemed to work in all them vampire flicks, right?! Actually, those were actual crosses. "Shoot, whatever works", I thought. I kept trying and trying.

Finally, in what seemed like an eternity, my fingers moved a little bit, enough to do a very small sign of the cross. I closed my eyes.

Shortly thereafter, I regained my movement and got up and out of the bed.

For some time, I didn't know what to think of that experience. A couple of years later, something similar happened again. I couldn't move in bed and felt as if I was being pushed against the bed against my will. For sure, my bedroom was haunted and a very physical spirit would manifest itself in such a way as to cause me distress. :-/

As an adult, I discovered the truth of what was happening to me. I was suffering from Hallucinatory Sleep Paralysis. At last! I didn't have to think and wonder anymore. There was a scientific explanation after all!!! :D :D :D Well, you can imagine how happy I was to know in all certainty my issue was not of the paranormal kind, but of the medical kind.

I have read of many people who had similar experiences and also believed them to be of the out-of-this-world realm. I was glad to know I wasn't the only one.

Have any one of you ever had a similar experience?

I found a page that explains it well:

http://nc.essortment.com/paralysissleep_rauu.htm

It is an interesting read!

I just felt like sharing. Thanks for tuning-in! :)

good story, HS.  I however dont think that there is an explanation for what happoned in my bedroom...

not trying to go off topic into paranormal activity, but here is what I mean:

ok, so my room looks like this, two beds, two bookcases, tv, enterence to the attic, three dressers, and there is an enterence to my grandma's part of the house(where she lives), and a spiril staircase going downstairs to my den, where my computers and desks all are.  Okay, so then this one time I remember like when my 4-year old cousin was like 2, we were in the den, and I brought him upstairs, and he requested to go down because he was scared, I said ok, and we went back down.  Then one time it was myself and my bro, and he was with us, and I needed to go upstairs for something, I asked if he wanted to come, he said no because of the "Scary Yellow thing."  I didnt know what he meant, and continued up.  So then recently, I was with a female friend watching a movie on my computer, and he was with us, and she asked if I could get something that I promised to give to her from upstairs, I said yes, and we both started up, but my cousin didnt wanna come, but I made him come.  So then we got up, and I asked my cousin about this scary yellow thing.  he siad its not there anymore.  I asked him where it was, and he pointed to an obsolete corner in the room.  he also said it was making a face, and he demonstarted an angry face.  I examined the stuff on the bookcase near it, and held up everything yellow and questioned if it was it, but he said no.  This got me thinking, did he see a ghost?  Its very much possible that a baby saw something not caught by two teenagers or a teen and a young adult, and what he described and where he pointed, you never know.  The dressers in teh room do date back some time in the "Florio" family, as belonging to my dad's mother previous to them being ours, and the enterence to the attic, at the first sighting, was wide open, and up there is a lot more of my dad's mother's stuff.  Could she be trying to comunicate with us as the "scary yellow thing?"  We may never know...

Your story centers around a perceived entity, whereas mine is based on a physical experience, which can easily be and often is perceived as paranormal, but is indeed scientifically and medically explainable. Put simply - A sleep disorder.

I liked your story too, by the way. :) Place a tape recorder there overnight at highest volume. Maybe you'll pick-up otherworldly sounds.

While we're at it -

Does anyone suffer form any other sleep disorders?

thanks

well to tell you the truth, every now and then, since I am right now in the den on my computer, I do have a rather good view of the upper room now, but I seem to have calculated the approximate time that I hear noises from up there.  I hear a loud click at about 12:20am, and another at about 5:30am.  I also remember back when contracting wasnt finished up there, and my bed was still in the bottom room, and there was a hole in the ceiling(where the spiril staircase would go), in the early morning at like 6, Id hear the same sound every day from upstairs, like something falling, and like a voice saying something in another language, on mornings that contractors were here, Id suspect them, but it used to happon on mornings when they werent here, and it eventually got scary.  But I havent heard it since...

Thanks for your insights, Hairspray. I had never heard of it before though I did have a wierd dream once. I dreamt that I was in bed reading this strange Japanese style writing that was suspended in mid-air. I was paralysed, I could not physically do or say anything. Then a sound errupted (very much like a life support machine indicating I was dead) and then I had a convulsive seizure - it was very scary. I have not experienced anything like it since.

As for sleeping disorders, I think I have a mild form of insomnia (one of the symptoms of Depression I can't shake off so easily). Before I lived with my girlfriend, I used to read until I fell asleep. It's not quite so easy to do that now. I go to bed later these days.

Thanks. And as far as your going to bed later these days, you can always count on someone being here in the forums, "night-owling" with you. ;D

I'm sorry to see you suffer from depression. Anything we can do/say to help?

I suffer from insomnia from time to time too. Whenever I do, I come here and hang out for a while. I not only become sleepy, but I go to bed happy. :)

Gawd Hairspray your tale had me on the edge of my seat !

I guess I suffer from a sleep disorder - tho I refer to as a awake disorder.  I would have to get some sleep for it to be a sleep disorder.  Basically I suffer chronic insomnia.  I average up to two hours sleep a night but have gone 5 days without a wink.
I have been hooked up to electrodes in uni's while they studied me for a week at a time - with no results.

I have opposite reations to calmatives like cammomile and lavender - they make my heart race 10 miles a minute. Sleeping pills do absolutley nothing to me at all.

Over the years (this started when I was under ten) I have tried everything - but mostly I just live with it.  I generally get pretty grumpy and nasty by the end of each week.

With regards to entities in the bedroom.  My cat Gypsy use to sleep on my bed when I was a kid - to turn over you had to bring one leg up to your chest and then down against the other leg.  Gypsy was like a lead weight and no way was he interupting his sleep to move for you.

Anyway - years after he died I would occassionally feel a big lump against my eg in bed and I would not be able to roll over.  I'd like to think Gypsy was just letting me know he was still around.

What you described Hairspray sounds like what happens in dreams - ie the chase where you cant run etc etc - only you wee actually awake by then.  That would totally freak me out.

I am controlling the main problem I had with depression (negative thoughts and feelings) and consider myself cured to some degree or other.

I don't think there is anything to say, Hairspray but thank you very much for your concern.  :)

Many years ago, I was working mids so I was sleeping in the day. I heard people in my apartment (people who were authorized to come in-the exterminator, plumber etc.) but I didn't know who and wanted to get up to tell them to get out so I could sleep. I couldn't get up. I couldn't open my eyes, I couldn't do anything. When I finally did open my eyes, I realized that I had dreamed the entire thing. There was no one in my apartment but me-and there hadn't been the entire time I was sleeping. It was just a bizarre dream-VERY REALISTIC. I have actually had a couple of dreams like that where I was very aware that I was sleeping.

Well, I haven't really been sleeping well in these last few months. For one my Cousin Chris "Monaco Chris" passed away. Then I find out that my Grandpa has Lung Cancer. Then I got my heart broken when my Girlfriend of the last 13 months broke up with me. I stay up all night dwelling on them, and then once I get to sleep I toss and turn and have nightmares about them. This is definately a rough time in my life, and I guess that its showing in my parodies, and my more seriously toned music as well. I just have a  hard time being the silly guy that I usually am lately. I mean the greatest parodies and music I ever wrote came during the happiest time of my life. Chris was around, and we were always out laughing and having a good time, My grandpa was healthy, and I was in love. So hopefully my life will get back to that point, and I will be able to get some sleep.

It will get better. Believe me, everyone goes through their share of rough times. I can relate. Hang in there and be patient.

Proven method *alert*:

If you can't sleep, get out of bed and out of the bedroom altogether.

Find something relaxing to do, get on the boards here or watch TV.

When you feel yourself drifting, go to bed and go to sleep.

If you end-up tossing and turning again, get back out of the bedroom.

Find something relaxing to do, get on the boards here or watch TV.

When you feel yourself drifting, go to bed and go to sleep.

If you end-up tossing and turning again, get back out of the bedroom.

Repeat this routine until the next time, when you do got to bed and actually stay asleep. :)

I used to do that all the time when I had to get up to go to school !! Dream I'd got up and then wake up properly and find I was still in bed.GRRRR

As to sleep disorders, my fiance sleepwalks and has night terrors.Of course he is asleep throughout where as on a bad night he might wake me up 4 or 5 times. As you can imagine it takes ages to get back to sleep again when you have been woken up by someone shouting, screaming and thrashing about,it can be pretty scarey.Sometimes by the 5th time it's  hard not to want to beat him with something !! Thankfully it's not all the time but after a week of disturbed nights I'm on my knees with exhaustion. When he was a child his parents had a lock on the outside of his bedroom door to keep him in as they were so scared he'd fall down the stairs or something. Most kids grow out of it trust me to pick one who didn't !

You sound like my son BMG!  You could have a mild allergy to a range of things that lumped together may keep you too hyped to sleep.  Paddy, my son, is sensitive to lots of things ranging from dust mites, grasses, pollens and the additives in processed food.

We've had an enormous amount of success in easing his insomnia by attacking the dust mite problem and sticking to as fresh and natural foods as possible.  Things like Coke and chocolate are guarenteed to keep him up all night.

Sorry for going off topic.  I just had that thought.  ;D

Don't be sorry, that's great advice! :D

Both Coke and chocolate have caffeine, which is a stimulant.

I had one instance where it was very difficult to rise from my bed.  I was working in Alaska on a ship and during one of the short sleeping periods available I couldn't raise myself up.  My head felt like it was going to burst with the pressure on it and I had to strain so hard at the waist level my legs rose up.  It felt like I had a 70lb blankent covering me.  When I did finally rise I was dizzy and disorientated.
I found out that the ship had filled some ballast tanks in the back of the ship and my bunk was now tilted with my feet above my head level and my blood had rushed to my head :-[.
Not the most pleasant way to be risen.
