Subject: Ideas for kids needed

Written By: boris66au on 08/21/03 at 06:10 p.m.

In two weeks we're taking our three year old son on an 18 hour car drive (with lots of breaks!).
I need ideas for keeping him amused and us sane.

How big is the car you're going to be driving?  I hope all of your stuff (or most of it anyway) is in a big moving van and the only stuff you have in your car are snacks and the people :)

For a three-year-old...hmmm...

He's definitely going to hate being cooped up and unable to move for so long...so I'd suggest taking a break every couple hours (you'd have to anyway to go to the restroom and get gasoline) to let the lad walk around.

Of course, you gotta keep moving, so while he's in the car, I think it's good to keep him occupied with maybe singing games or something visual, like "look at that wallaby!" or something like that.  If you interact with him (I know it'll get tiring, but who said parenting was easy?) he'll be less likely to cry and scream and stuff...but the laughing can get loud ;)

I'm not sure what games are appropriate for 3-year-olds, but I'm sure you can find that out pretty easily :)  Good luck, and when you get to Queensland, do tell how it went :)

I've got the removal guys coming two weeks today so we'll only have what we need for a week or so in the car...plus my mother!
At least my son's into my type of music, like he has a choice, so I can sing to my hearts content.
We'll be taking regular breaks for a cigarette to calm my nerves (I hate seeing people smoke in the car when kids are in there) so there's no problem there.
I suppose I can give him some marker pens and let him loose on my mother....

I have an almost-3-year-old son, too, and know just how hard it can be to keep a little one occupied.  I would suggest you buy him a new car or truck and don't let him see it until your trip!  My son is fascinated with any types of toy vehicles...trucks, dump trucks, garbage trucks, etc. and I know something like that would keep his interest for a while.

Good luck with your trip, boris!  :D

Thanks CF! My son's fascinated with cars too, he's got hundreds of them!
I can just imagine it hitting hubby on the back of the head though when he's had enough of it.

Also another problem I have is how I can stop him calling himself Bob! it's not his name.

Well, you can always change his name legally :)  What's his birth name?  Maybe that can be his nickname...

I wonder what would happen if you gave him a Rubik's Cube?  :D

His name's nothing like Bob but I got him two bob the builder speaking toys when he was younger so now he's either Bob or Twobob!
Lol I can see lots of little bricks hitting the back of hubbys head if I got him a Rubiks Cube

Hi Boris

Hey your headed my way.  Hope you like your summers hot!!!
I don't envy you having to make such a trip with a 3 year old and your mother.  Maybe you could buy your little boy an inexpensive Walkman to play tapes.   My kids always loved the tapes that came with the book and they can look at the pictures whilst listening to the story.  You can get Disney, Sesame Street and even Bob the Builder - maybe not - might just reinforce the Bob thing!

My cousin was christened "Gary" but always called himself Mickey because he loved Mickey Mouse.  Mickey passed away in 1999 aged 44 and there were friends and acquaintances at his funeral that never knew that his name was actually Gary.

Cheers  :)

Thanks for that jaytee i'll give the tape idea a go  :)

I really don't know why my mum wants to come with us, i've said we'll fly her out for a holiday when we get there but I don't think she believed me  :P

With a bit of luck immigration won't extend her visa  :o

No can do on the vodka :( We're sharing the driving, at least that's what hubby thinks, I plan to be eating and sleeping the whole way.

We took him to England last November and he wasn't too bad on the plane, although then he had lots of buttons to press and stewardess's talking to him every two minutes when they came to see why his light was on (yet again).
I stupidly told them to ignore our lights which meant hubby and I didn't get any service either....well I got some service cos I made hubby get up and fetch stuff  ;D

buy some coloring books (or even plain-papered notebooks) and some crayons for him.  that kept my brother and me occupied for awhile on long car trips...good luck, boris. :)

Hiya Boris,

You could also fly your Mum and 'Bob' up, and meet them at the other end?.....

Look forward to hearing from you when you get up here!  :D

I once drove cross country with my 3 year old daughter and a pregnant wife - yes, lots of stops.  Becky was into forms, the little beureaucrat, so my sister, who was with us, brought losts of them, a clip board, and a pen.  Becky sat for hours happily "filling them out".  ;D

You gotta do what ya gatta do.

thankfully he doesn't get itchy ears.

Thanks to everyone for their suggestions, even the strait jacket (which I might use for my mother)

I'll let you know how we get on, or if we even get there.

We're off tomorrow!

I'll blame everyone who offered advice if it doesn't work, if your ears burn in the next few days you'll know the suggestions failed  :P

See you in a few weeks  :)
