Subject: TV Advertisements trying to be funny?

Written By: Child_of_the_80s on 09/12/03 at 01:02 a.m.

I saw this M&M s commercial with this dude playing with male doll and the green M&M FEMALE doll it was so disturbing I dont know what they were trying to accomplish. These major companies need to get back to the basics in advertising.Advertising is cut and dry and being basic is the way to success. For me all they have to show is the M&Ms pouring out of the bag with a glass of milk in the background and Im sold. Its cheap and it makes its point. Most of the times these products dont need celebrity spokespeople like Pepsi with Britney Spears and the Osbournes because who actually buys the product just because their favorite celebrites do.Catherine Zeta Jones is one my favorite babes but I dont go all out to get a T-Mobile phone. They think we are stupid!Advertisement campaigns last too long and get bored easily like that "Can you hear me now?" joker.I wonder how much he makes just for saying that?Im sure he gets chicks from it too. ???

I like your rant Child of the 80s. I've often thought that companies had the wrong idea of selling a product to people. The fad at the moment seems to be, the more obsure they make their adverts the better.

One example is the X-Box advert. This was the one where a child shoots from a woman giving birth to him, his life flashes before our eyes and inevitably he crash-lands into a coffin. Dynamic yes but it would have been a more suitable advert for life insurance. I would be more happy to see screenshots of the latest games.

I loved that ad. I think Microsoft were doing it specifically so that it would get banned and lead teens like myself into thinking it was "cool" because of it.
Ads these days do not really look like the company is trying to sell the product at first- instead they try to appeal to the intended target audience through a comedy sketch or series of images or something, and THEN market the product, usually just with a quick slogan or picture of the product itself. Some would say this is what makes them stick in one's mind.
For example I remember a really stupid advert for Lelli Kelli shoes- there was some weird kid wearing pink dancing around with technicolour ponies or something, drawing on her trainers. Now I sure as hell won't go and buy the things, but I remembered the advert, didn't I? So are most parents of young children who may be thinking of buying presents for their birthdays or something, and that will pop into their minds in the middle of the shopping mall.
Which proves the commercial works because it's stupid.

What about the commercial for Bounty paper towels (or whatever it is) where the kid shakes the orange soda and sprays it at his mom? Now,you would think that the mom would punish the kid, but Instead the mom says "Billy, What is wrong with you?!" and then says "This works much better!" and she uses the thing to spray the dishes! Now why the HECK would any mom do that!

I think any commerical for paper towel/carpet cleaner/etc. is stupid.  The kid spills a big bowl of spaghetti or a huge jar of fruit punch and the mom just shakes her head and smiles as she simply grabs the roll of paper towels and hugs and kisses the kid. :P

Why does every woman in a hair product advert have to shake their hair about? They wouldn't need hair products if they didn't.

Why do we finally get rid of that dumb Hardee's Star, and only a short time later get stuck with the almost-as-bad Arby's Oven Mitt?
