Subject: Does anyone else like Derren Brown?

Written By: @ssKicker on 10/03/03 at 02:23 p.m.

All my friends are watching this stupid, utterly boring Blavid Daine stunt. But Derren Brown's the only one for me. He doesn't claim to be psychic, but relies on psychology, skill and good old-fashioned luck. (And in my opinion a good bit of sex appeal  ;))
I hope he doesn't die on Sunday. He's going to go up to a line of people with guns and stand in front of one of them. One of them is loaded, and obviously he has to try and pick one that isn't! I expect he's got some trick up his sleeve to fix it. At least, I HOPE he does.

That's a pretty risky stunt to pull.  I agree with you that he probably has a trick up his sleeve.

Judging by what I have read about the stunt. Derren Brown is basically relying on the way the person behind him is counting to six (the amount of cartridges in the gun) and nothing else. Until he reaches his top secret location he won't know who his five participants will be.

My personal opinion is that he must have a certain amount of confidence or else he wouldn't set himself up for a live suicide. Remember Penn and Teller doing that impressive 'Catching the bullet between their teeth' illusion? I thought that was amazing.

Unfortunately, as cynical as I am, I believe the whole thing is a mad publicity stunt (I have never heard of him until now).

Just to update, Derren Brown didn't blow his head off.

Yay. Although he got it wrong the first time, didn't he? He was probably just doing that to build suspense, but I was scared!

Actually, when you figure out the odds of him killing himself:

*Odds of getting the live bullet on the first shot he fires= 16%
*Odds of firing it at himself when he has the choice of firing it away=50%
*He claims his psychological skill works 9 times out of 10, so odds of him being wrong=10%

Which means he has a 0.8% chance of killing himself on the first shot.
On the second shot he has a 1% chance of killing himself.
On the third shot he has a 1.25% chance of killing himself.
On the fourth shot he has a 1.67% chance of killing himself.
On the fifth shot he has a 2.5% chance of killing himself.
And he fires the sixth shot away.

Not exactly the most dangerous stunt, then.

Oh- and I was thinking of having a go at the bullet-catching stunt:

**SPOILERS**

You get a fake gun (or a real one if you're allowed in your country) and put powder in it but no bullet. In the meantime you get a bullet that has already been shot and put it in your mouth. You get your friend to stand very far away from you so the powder doesn't do any damage, and fire the gun. As soon as you see them do that, open your mouth to show the bullet between your teeth.

Why does he remind me of George C Scott (the man that played Scrooge in 'A Christmas Carol'?

It has now been confirmed on the news that the stunt was a hoax (using blanks instead of real bullets).

I believe Derren has now lost his credibility. It confirms he had no faith in his own abilities to risk blasting his head off.

Even if he did use blanks I think they could do some damage if you fire them straight at your temple.

Didn't someone die on a film set doing this?  (sneaks off to check Snopes before anyone else does)

Earlier in the show, a firearms expert shot a blank at a plastic bottle. The bottle flew several yards away, and when they retrieved it, it was BLACK and had a hole in each side of it.
