Subject: Computer/Techie Question

Written By: Junior on 10/15/03 at 06:21 p.m.

I'm about 95% sure of the answer, just need a confirmation from someone who's smart about computers...

In order to save on computer space, I've been clearing my history/cookies/temp. internet files on a regular basis, as insisted by my aunt. Anyways, I came across another group of folders in Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files ... the folder is usually named by a random group of numbres and letters. I noticed that they were internet files (html, gif, jpg, etc.) that I supposedly deleted before...so I have sent them to the Recycle Bin but I have yet to empty it. Everything seems to be working fine with the files in the Bin, and I just want to make sure before I delete the files from the Bin that it won't harm my computer in any way...just a little info needed to confirm that no harm will be done....

thanks in advance!

Sorry, I don't know Junior... but where is it you go to clear your cookies again? ::)  It wouldn't hurt our computer at all to get rid of extra junk.

Don't clear the "temporary internet file" directories by deleting the files, as that doesn't reset IE's indexing: instead, go to the Tools menu "Internet Options" item and click the "Delete all offline content" button.  Alternatively, just tell it to use less space for its cache.

Cookies take up no space in real terms... you're talking 00s of cookies for the size of a single MP3 file (let alone mpgs...)

I followed this but don't get the "delete all offline contents button"  is it the version of IE that I'm using?

Sorry, memory was skipping a step: there should be a "Delete Files..." button, which gives another dialog with a "Delete all off-line content" checkbox... that's in IE5 and 6.

Pardon me for seeming extremely computer-illiterate, but exactly how do you do that?

Same place as before: in IE, from the Tools menu, select "Internet Options" - on that dialog in the "Temporary Internet Files" section half way down, there's a button "Settings..." - click that and you can see a slider that says "Amount of disk space to use"
