Subject: 8.5 years.. and counting.. 10 isn't far away

Written By: ChuckyG on 11/07/03 at 07:21 p.m.

It kind of dawned on me the other day that it's been close to ten years now since I started the first website (the 80s site).  This month marks the 8 and a half year mark (roughly, I'm not sure if it was May or June when I started the site).  I haven't been making a big "to-do" on the anniversaries as they go whipping past, but maybe I should start thinking about something big for the "double digits".  I started amiright at the 5 year mark of inthe80s, so that site will hit it's 5 year at that point too.

So what should I do to mark the big 10? Party? Drink some Moxie in quite solitude? If I'm going to do something big, I would imagine I'd need a decent head start on it, since it may take a while to put together. The people who hang out on amiright want to do a convention, maybe I can use this as an excuse to put something together.

I'm up for it, if it is soon. If not pretend I am here and drink the night away.

Congrats Chucky.  In what is still a relatively new industry - 8.5 years is pretty darn cool.

And yes I think the ten year anniversary should be celebrated in a big way.

Maybe all us aussies coud get together on the day and do a live broadcast over to all you guys celebrating somewhere !!

Sheesh, I'll bet it feels like eight decades sometimes.  Congratulations Chuck.  Hmmm, a year and a half to go.  You ought to be able to get us all together in hyper space somewhere by then.  How far back do the archives stretch?  It might be interesting to see some ancient posts.

I believe they stretch back to around 1998.. although a quick peak at the archives and it looks like I'm missing the real early stuff..

Cabo is in Mexico, resort/party type town. The second lead singer of Van Halen, Sammy Hagar has a bar there.

I wouldn't mind some serious ideas for what I could plan, Cabo isn't really likely, though it's certainly fun to dream about. I guess I wouldn't mind traveling somewhere in the US if it was some place touristy that other people could plan their vacations around going.  Otherwise, maybe rent out a bar or something in New England (doesn't have to be in Boston or near me in Worcester, I could always go south into Rhode Island or Conneticut if that makes it easier for people to meet). The more complex a get-together would be, the closer it needs to be to me (or whoever wants to plan it). I'd probably prefer East Coast type destinations, since there's less travel for me.

What about a state close to New England (where you are in Massachusetts) and also close to the Canada border for our Canadian friends?

I think the states of Vermont and New Hampshire would be ideal. Our friends in Indiana and other places away from New England would have to travel more of a distance, but I think with a 2 year jumpstart on travel plans it should work out. Then again, I'd personally have no problem with a Massachusetts affair. I'd have plenty of planning time, that's for sure! 8)

I'm trying to remember when I joined in on the 80's madness here.   ???  But, I don't see my name in the archives - I think I was here though.

Is BoyofCorn still around??

Edited to add that I found a post I made from 9/99...wonder if it was my first post?? http://www.inthe00s.com/archive/inthe80s/bbs3/webBBS_3608.shtml

Maybe the Brits could do a similar thing.  (Unless EasyJet start cheap flights to the US East Coast I don't think too many of us could get there)

Not too sure where everyone lives but I know some of us don't live too far apart.

boy of corn is long gone to my knowledge.  I think I'm missing the original messageboard in those archives, so your fist post could be older (if you remember a wwwboard type board). I thought I had converted them as well as the other packages, but maybe I could never get it working.

yup, I actually put an old archive of it online:

http://www.inthe80s.com/july1995/1980.html

so glad I got rid of that awful background image early on. Most websites really looked that bad in 1995 to (not just mine).  The table tag hadn't become widely supported when I started the site, so it was pretty simple.

So if it was July 1995 when you started, it would officially be eight and a half in January 2004.  :)

Actually, that was just the oldest snapshot of the site I still had. The site was up for at least a month or two by that point. One of the original backgrounds (which I wish I could find) was done with jellybeans, and really hideous to look at.
