Subject: If You Had Your Own Radio Station

If you had your own radio station, what would be on you playlist? That is considering there is no format other than music, no limit to a genre of music, no commercials, and you can repeat a song until you're tire of it. Get your lists ready. ;)

I would play soft rock mostly (like U2, Savage Garden, Blondie etc- especially U2!) and the odd hard rock thing. I wouldn't have ANY "manufactured", "plastic" acts (like S Club, Britney etc) whatsoever.

I'd play only stuff from the late 60's through the early 80's!  Lots of folk-rock, soft rock, classic rock, pop, R&B and disco!  :D

On my station, I would have songs that MAKE SENSE.

-None of those weird rocks songs that have people screaming something over and over again.

-No booty music disguising themsleves as Hip-Hop or Rap. I would have Rap music that has something relevant to say besides how much money you have or who you're going to bust a cap in.

-NO POP!!!

-"Seven Nation Army" has to be played at least three times a day

Haven't got round to owning my own station yet(!), but I did work on Hospital Radio for a time...does that count?

Anyway, my output would (and did!) lean heavily on 50's-early 80's mainstream (you can't beat a bit o' mainstream!), indulgently played for my pleasure as well as anyone daft enough to tune in...mind you, the patients seemed to like it...after listening to me for a couple of hours, their recovery rate would suddenly improve and they'd be making a hurried rush for the door marked 'exit'...!

Whether that was a good or bad thing, I couldn't say...!

Indie pop and indie rock, a mix of different subgenres of rock, and some experimental stuff. A handful of hip-hop too, but not like the hip-hop on the radio today. I don't like that stuff.

Subject: Re: If You Had Your Own Radio Station

Written By: Billy_Florio on 11/10/03 at 03:34 p.m.

Id have a truely free-form radio show, where there would be a mixture of many different genres of music, mostly rock, and the only thing that wouldnt be there would be stuff out of the dreaded four: Nu metal, bubblegum pop, pop-punk (ie Blink, GC) and Emo (and its subgenre scremo...ill make an exception for Weezer and maybe Jimmy Eat world).....because of this miixture, and the reason that I wouldnt listen to the stations managers pleas to play certain songs, is the reason why I refused to do a radio show at my college (that plus they wouldnt pay me lol).....

Id first off base my show on classic rock.  I would play the big ones (ie beatles, stones, zep. floyd etc) but I wouldnt play them so much that you get tired of hearing them (hear that Q104.3?) also, I wouldnt play the same popular songs from them all the times (ie Satisfaction, Stairway, Another brick, baba O, Light my fire etc)..Id mix their popular stuff with not so popular songs, and songs by them that I think are better than some of their others...for example, Id play songs like the Stone sversion of Can i get a witness, and I just want to make love to you, and so of their unreleased stuff....or Id play early Floyd (which is something that is NEVER played)...Syd Barrett era....Id also play B sides and unrealesed stuff...Bruce Springsteen and Nirvana have albums of unreleased stuff, some better than their released stuff....

Id mix in with the big bands, a bunch of classic rock bands that dont get as much recognition....for example, Pat Travers, or RIck Derrrenger, or Donnie Iris, or J Geils, or Dave Mason, or Hooters, or Bob Seger System or The Easybeats or Blues Magoos or a handful of other bands....Id mix bands that didnt even get a hit....

Also, the constraints of "Classic rock" on non existant...Nirvana is classic rock, as is Elvis Presley, as is The Standells as is Iggy Pop as is Bread.....Id have a mixture of Garage rock, blues rock, roots rock (ie CCR) AOR, Metal, Early rock, Bristish Invasion, Punk, Grunge, Trash, etc etc etc

Metal would be played...this includes Metallica and Van Halen, and Judas Priest, and Iron Maiden and Megadeth, etc

Indie Rock and Indie Pop would be heavily played....Id work bands like Elliot SMith, Pavement, Black Keys, Soundtrack of our lives, Junior Senior, Freddy and the foregone conclusions etc in there somewhere

pop will not be forgotten...I mean good pop...Early Michael Jackson will have a home here....as will the Jackson 5 and the Jacksons....60s pop acts like the Flying Machine and the cowsills will be around....as will much 80s pop....
(and, just so you know..I have no problem with playing Kylie Minogues "Love at first sight"..but ONLY Love at first sight...)

80s Synth Pop and New ROmantic isnt forgotten either....TFF, Dran Duran, Gary Newman, Human League..etc, will all be played

Kraftwork will most likely be the Only Techno touched with a 10 foot poll....unless Fatboy SLim is considered techno...and I mean good Fatboy slim....

the singer songwriters would not be forgotten......everyone from Woody Guthrie to Ryan Adams have a home here....

New releases are not to be ignored...

Newer rock bands (ie Matchbox 20, Goo Goo dolls. 3 doors down, 311 etc) are not to be ignored.....

R&B and Soul as well as Motown and Doo-wop will NOT be ignored...that means everything from Ike Turner to The Temptations to Marvin Gaye, to Stevie Wonder to Ray Charles to the 5 Satins, to Dion to Little Anthony to Brian McKnight to Boyz II men will be played......

Jazz and blues and country will not be ignored....Robert Johnson and Son House and BB King and Charlie Parker and Herbie Hancock and Miles Davis and Hank Williams and Charlie RIch will be played....same goes for Funk and Reggae and ska

disco is a tricky territory....most disco sucks so much its painfull.....some is alright..Bee Gees is ok, KC and the SUnshine band is alright...stuff like HEart of Glass and Play that funky music are good...but dont get your hopes up...crap like Ring my bell and more more more will not even get airplay ......but Donna Summers Bad Girls will

Surf instrumentals and really long songs will not be strayed away from...so that means that when I play Karn Evil #9, you can bet its gonna be the 30 minute version

Rap and Hip Hop..hmmm....ok, alot of the crap out today will come no where near my studio.....Beasty Boys are always welcome, at least until i get tired of them...and its probably only gonna b their first two albums.....most old school can come abord...Sugar hill gang, Run DMC, LL Cool J, Fat Boys, Grandmaster Flash, NWA, Public Enemy etc....if a Puff daddy or 50 cent album comes close to my studio is will be shot at.....

um.. I think those are the majority of rules...and I do make exceptions..if the song is good.....plus, dont think that everything by the bands I mentioned here is golden...I will probably never play the ROlling Stones Shattered....or 85% of their stuff after 1974....I will also never play early Beatles like I want to hold your hand.....also, no soup for some of Chicagos ballads....

any questions?

When I was a youngster, I used to record myself talking into my old Stereo. First I would tape music from the radio, and then put it onto my tape.

I was the only 5 year old DJ in Canada to play Harold Melvin and The Bluenotes.  ;D

Oldies!!!!

Actually I would probably just play The Beach Boys all day long... and when one of their songs that I particualarly like comes on, I would repeat it for several days before moving on.  But,  I would play others, like The Monkees, some old David Bowie stuff, Mark Dinning, the Clovers, The Heartbeats,  The Regents, The Five Satins, Chuck Berry, Otis Redding, The Drifters, The Surfaries, Buddy Holly, Frankie Lymon and The Teenagers, Bill Haley, Zappacosta, and well, I could be here for a long time.  Anyway, if it's called an Oldie, then I'd play it...

But, most of the time would be dedicated to the Beach Boys.

Oh yeah, I love the Beach Boys  ;D

If I had my own radio station, I would not allow talking all over the music! You know how when a song is playing, the dj will be talking during the instrumental intro, sometimes even after the vocal starts. That's really annoying. (Sometimes they'll talk during the last 20 seconds of a song too, before it's done playing.)  >:( I wouldn't allow them to take the song off the air before it's done playing either. (If the record conks out or something, that's another matter.)

I could so live with that, so long as you didn't just stick to the 30 hits and played stuff off a lot of the 70s stuff too.

I assume you don't play any current stuff (or stuff from the past 3 years), right? Cuz' you said 70s, 80s, 90s, which obviously excludes stuff from before 1970 and after 1999.

I was just wondering.  :)

I'd go along with that policy.  My local station regularly cuts songs off part way through because its time for the news or a traffic report or a jingle.  I don't just mean the last 20 seconds or so, I've known them miss out a whole verse + chorus and fade.

I totally agree with you, ellipsis. I don't like it at all when the people talk all over the beginning -- or any portion -- of a song; I like to enjoy the whole song from start to finish. And if I had my own station, there would be no talking over the songs. Also, my station would have a playlist so extensive that you could never hear the same song twice in one day; i.o.w, variety.

I'd also play "correct" (normal) versions of songs. Sometimes a station will play a remixed "dance" version of a slow song, I hate that!!  >:( because in most cases I believe that the slow version symbolizes the true meaning of the lyrics. (Some of you out there might disagree with me, but that's my opinion.)

I've also noticed that stations sometimes edit out part of a song, and no I don't mean dirty words, I mean sometimes a whole line or verse or instrumental break or whatever; that annoys me too.

My mother worked in radio before (and 6 months after) I was born, so I do have some sort of influence (even though I was too small to remember).

Ditto. I don't like it either. Two years ago this one station in Los Angeles was playing nothing but Christmas music from Thanksgiving Day all the way through Christmas. I think that if a station insists on doing that, they're gonna lose listeners that way. Okay, maybe some holiday music sprinkled in with the regular music is okay, but to do it 24/7 is silly, imho.

Oh well, I think I've ranted enough now.  :) If I could add this to my above post, I would.

I agree 100% about DJ's not talking while a song
is playing!!  And even WORSE--some of them sing
along!!  Lordy, what are they THINKING?

My favorites would include...TELL ME SOMETHING
GOOD (my all time favorite 70's song), by Chaka
Khan and Rufus...plus A Whiter Shade of Pale
by Procol Harem (sorry if my spelling is wrong)...
although that's from the 60's...Honky Tonk Women
by the Stones....HOT LEGS by Rod Stewart....
Beast of Burden, Keep Your Hands to Yourself,
You Sexy Thing, Kiss You all Over by Exile--
on and on and on and on....
