Subject: Songs That Are Outdated Today

Written By: Indy Gent on 11/12/03 at 01:46 p.m.

How many songs can you think of that would confuse the heck out of the latest generation because they are outdated? For example, "Only Women Bleed" by Alice Cooper, "At The Hop" by Danny and the Jrs.. Well you know the game. ;D

Anything with the word "jive" in it.
And Blazin' Squad's latest single. Yes, I know it's only just been released... but what in the name of @rse do "blinging", "selecta" and "grind" mean?
Bear in mind that I am a fourteen-year-old, state-school girl who is expected to know these things. Hehe- so what if I read Asimov instead of Smash Hits?

"Blinging"- The shameless showing off and/or bragging of one's jewelry OR posessing a sickening amount of "iced-out" items. you'll get a perfection defintion of this term by listening to "Bling, Bling" by Lil Wayne (formerly of the HotBoyz)

"Selecta"- I think this one has to do with the DJ of a party. Most Reggae artists like to shout "Come DOOOOWN selecta!" just before they start their song.

Grind-it's a reference to "Hustlin'" or doing your thang to make cash, especially selling drugs. (bad, bad, bad)

These are my definitions to the best of my knowledge, I hope i was of some assistance.

Oh, and to answer the topic of this board, I think that song "I've been working on the railroad" is a little out of place.

"Johnny Get Angry," by Hal David and Sherman Edwards.  Not because it's a topical song, like "Fixin' to Die Rag," or because it has over loaded with slang.  It just seems the sentiment is out of date, and won't be back again for a while.  Joanie Sommers had a hit with it in 1962.  Here are the lyrics:

Johnny, I said we were through
Just to see what you would do
You stood there and hung your head
Made me wish that I were dead

CHORUS
Oh, Johnny get angry, Johnny get mad
Give me the biggest lecture I ever had
I want a brave man, I want a cave man
Johnny, show me that you care, really care for me

Every time you danced with me
You let Freddy cut in constantly
When he'd ask, you'd never speak
Must you always be so meek?

CHORUS

Every girl wants someone who
She can always look up to
You know I love you, of course
Let me know that you're the boss

CHORUS

Johnny, get angry, Johnny
Johnny, Johnny, Johnny, Johnny

FADE

She loves him, but she needs him to lose his temper to prove his love for her. I don't think that sentiment washes anymore.
If you really love me, Johnny, lose your temper AND give me a black eye...

I'm not sure of the exact name of your song, but I'm guessing it's called "If You Want to Be Happy For the Rest of Your Life" and I can't remember the artist.

"If you want to be happy for the rest of your life,
Don't make a pretty woman your wife.
Go for my personal point of view;
Get an ugly girl to marry you......

....Say man, I saw your woman the other day!
She's ugly, but she can cook, yeah"

So yeah the song is pretty much about choosing a wife who's ugly because she's more likely to be domestic and cooks well.
Uh-huh. Not for today!

"Only Women Bleed"?  I'm pretty sure abused housewives still exist, if they're not as prevalent.  And I'm also pretty sure "If You Wanna Be Happy" was always meant as a joke.

My vote goes for the infamous "He Hit Me (And It Felt Like a Kiss)."  Of course, it was also pretty outdated when it was originally released.

Awww I love this song!  It's called "If You Wanna Be Happy" by Jimmy Soul.  It's on the My Best Friend's Wedding Soundtrack.

Ya got me ?  Women are still bleeding all over the world.  I think any generation that heard this song would know exactly wha its about.

I was thinking about men "bleeding" too. So it's no longer exclusively women.

"I dig rock-n-roll music" by Peter, Paul, and Mary
"Dancing Fool" by Frank Zappa
"I can't stand losing you" by the Police (they talk about LP records-yes, I still have many of those)
"Leningrad" by Billy Joel (The city went back to the name St. Petersburg)

I'm sure there are more but those are the only ones I can think of right now.

And you can add "Still In Saigon" by Charlie Daniels, since it is now Ho Chi Minh City.

"We Didn't Start The Fire".  Sure, it has some wonderful history, but it only goes up to '89.  At least two more verses could be added on. :)

Here are a few outdated songs . . .

Oliver's Army - Elvis Costello (as much as it is a great song, I have difficulty understanding the lyrics).

Enola Gay - Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark (not so much for the 'gay' in the title but that it is referring to nuclear war).
