Subject: Clothes That Should Or Shouldn't Make A Comeback!

Written By: Lesley on 11/21/03 at 04:21 a.m.

Wandering around the shops I couldn't help but notice that about 70% of the clothes for sale are Eighties throwbacks - I can't understand why anyone would want to unleash them on the public again as most of them were bloody awful the first time round!

They did make me laugh though, as they reminded me of the clothes I wore to my first Secondary School disco. I was dressed up in my best stuff - a pale grey horizontal striped bat-winged jumper, grey baggies with elasticated bottoms and some huge horrendous Pat Butcher style earrings! Think that was bad - the boys were wearing drainpipe trousers, white toweling socks, slip on shoes and an article of clothing that for the life in me I can't understand why they thought they looked cool... A pencil thin tie with piano keys running down (think Mickey Pearce from Only Fools And Horses). Of course we all had the essential Eighties 'Mullet' hairstyle!

I'd borrowed my brothers' most prized possession to liven up proceedings for the evening - Nellie The Elephant by The Toy Dolls. This went down a storm with the boys as they lined themselves up and started headbanging with their air guitars in classic Status Quo style. Sadly, I couldn't have impressed them that much, as when they played Careless Whisper for the compulsory slow dance at the end I stood on my own watching. Mmmm, I really can't understand why!!!!

Apart from the above, top of my list for clothes that should never have made it back into the shops are definitely:-

The Toe Socks (a bit like gloves for feet) - I remember them when Fame came out, as they were kind of the offspring of legwarmers. My sister had a pair and she has really long toes, which believe me made them look very creepy!

See for yourself how freaky they are !!

We should bring back shoulder-pads and fake leather jackets. And blokes with long hair, you never see enough of them these days for some reason.

Ooh, but two things we shouldn't bring back- midi skirts and leggings. They could make the most 'perfect' legs on the planet look awful.

Anything NEON!!  I mean, no one has the complexion to pull off chartreuse.  That's just criminal.

Leotards with a belt  ??? - a la Jane Fonda.

I love slogan T-shirts, but there are hardly any funny ones around these days. One of mine reads "All Your Base Are Belong to Us", which nobody seems to understand any more, sadly.
We really should have the two you mentioned.

OOO yeah, I got the best slogan t-shirts!  Here are what some say:

"Stop reading my shirt"
"how do you keep a moron occupied all day? (see back of shirt)" and on back reads, "see front of shirt"
"Off duty cop working on a case"(shows a case of beer)
"My theopist says its not my fault"

Ive got more, but I dont remember them off the top of my head...

clothes that should NOT make a comeback (even though they were popular only a year ago) are those shirts that say "HOTTIE" and other things like that.  especially for elementary school kids.  there is nothing more disturbing that seeing a fourth grade girl wearing a shirt that says "follow me, i'll make your dreams come true." :-X  (she also had a mullet, but that's another story...)

I once saw a seven-year-old with a T-shirt that read "*PORN STAR*".

...Can't the cameraman get arrested for that?

Urgh, I know what you mean. I've seen several 12 year olds wearing the French Connection Uk T-Shirts with slogans like : -

SUPERFCU*
FCU* LIKE A BUNNY
SEXY AS FCU*
HOT FCU*

It's just not right !

Acid or Stonewashed jeans most definitely. We also need to get rid of those dirty-on-purpose lookin jeans or the ones that have strategically placed bleach spots. YUCK

oh yeah and ruffled shirts(think Prince) should never again see the light of day.

Nothing wrong with thongs, but if people have them showing above their trousers... urgh. It must give them a mega wedgie too, pulling them up that high! Ouch!

I have some stonewashed jeans. ;D
And you're right, those dirty-on-purpose jeans just look, well, dirty. I could buy a pair of ordinary jeans for half the price and roll in a puddle, and everyone would think I was cool.

This thread is just hilarious....

Shellsuits--I don't know what they are!

I hate it when middle-aged women wear clothing
obviously meant for teens....

Does anyone remember high-heeled sneakers??
They were truly atrocious, and I LOVE heels...

They're like tracksuits, but they're made of a sort of slippery, synthetic stuff.

Last winter, my English teacher commented on the strategically placed bleach spotted jeans and I found it quite funny because it could be true.  This is what she said:

"I don't like those types of jeans. It looks like they dragged you on the road behind a salt truck on your way to school!"

Hehehe.

hehe - 6 months ago, I would have agreed with you. Recently, i purchased black footless hoisery, and wore my tights witha denim mini-skirt. I gotta say - I felt so 80s!

I love the 80s fashion comeback - we needed some variety. I've gotten so sick of wearing the same old 'plain' clothes. LONG LIVE THE 80S REVIVAL. Just, pease let there no be more 80s covers of classic songs.

Clothes that shouldn't come back:
- Shell suits (especially with white stilettos - so Essex Girl!)
- Body suits - adult baby-grow? No thanks.
- Leggings - make your bum look awful. Skin tight ones with a skirt look good though.
- Animal print - tacky or what?
- Drainpipes - so unflattering. Keep with the boot cut!
- White Net Vests - Can you say fat hairy old man? erghhh

Clothes That I'm glad have come back -

- Off-the-shoulder tops - I love these tops
- Strippy clothing - but lets not over do it, you gotta wear something plain with a strippy item
- Mini-skirts - flattering on the right people
- Turn ups on jeans - fantastic when you find that pair of jeans that are too long!
- Suit jackets worn with jeans and t-shirt - stylish and simple :)
