Subject: Lines in songs that you love...

Written By: Criz on 12/08/03 at 01:57 p.m.

...for one reason or another.

Hey everyone, I'm back for Christmas from uni (where I don't have the net in my halls :() and thought I'd start, (oh yes -you've guessed it) another thread on the topic of music :D

Simple really, there are some great lyrics out there. They may have touched you, made you laugh, or made you think that you can relate to what the singer's saying. Or they could just be plain clever, and you don't think many people have sussed out what's REALLY being said.

For example, lyrics in Sheryl Crows 'My Favourite Mistake', Billie Ray Martin's, 'Your Loving Arms' and Third Eye Blind's 'Never Let You Go' all get to me beacuse they remind me of my first love - now that's sometimes a bad thing, yet I love all 3 songs!

Now I only recently 'really' listened to the lyrics in 'Laid' by James. ''The neighbours complain about the noises above, but she only comes when she's on top'' - clever ;D On a similar note - to those who know what 'She Bop' (Cyndi Lauper), 'Turning Japanese' (The Vapours) and 'Teenage Kicks' (Undertones) are all about - well, I still wonder how some people haven't figuired it all out!

And it's over to you guys...

I'm sure there are one hundred others but the first lyrics that come to mind are:  "Welcome to your life.  There's no turning back" from Everybody Wants To Rule The World by Tears For Fears.  I just think those are pretty great opening lines.

Saw you last night
Dance by the light, of the moon
Stars in your eyes
Free from the life, that you knew
--Ben Folds Five, Magic

The clock's running down
The team's losing ground
To the opposing defense
The young quarterback
Waits for the snap
When suddenly it all starts to make sense
He's got all kinds of time, he's got all kinds of time
All kinds of time
He's got all kinds of time
All kinds of time...
--Fountains of Wayne, "All Kinds of Time"
(I guess these lyrics really lose something when you can't hear the execution)

Gawd! Too many to mention, depending on mood...

But I will reserve a special place for the final lines of The Beatles' 'The End'...

'...And in the end
The love you take
Is equal to the love you make...'

Deeply profound, although the song in its entirety is somewhat lame...

What's wrong with you

I've got so many......

"It seems like yesterday but it was long ago" ('Against the Wind' Bob Seger)

"Does it bother you now all the mess I made. Does it bother you now the clothes you told me not to wear. Does it bother you now all the angry games we played." ('Don't Think of Me' Dido)

"No one knows the lonely one whose head's in the clouds." ('Dreamboat Annie' Heart)

"...the big bad world doesn't owe you a thing." ('Get Over It' The Eagles)

"Go on now go walk out the door. Just turn around now
'cause you're not welcome anymore." ('I Will Survive' Gloria Gaynor)

"Cuz you weren't there when I was scared I was so alone" ('Losing Grip' Avril Lavigne---might seem lame, but I can totally relate to those lyrics)

"Jesus loves you more than you will know" ('Mrs.Robinson' Simon and Garfunkel)

"It's all right to make mistakes you're only human. Inside everybody's hiding something" ('Slide' Dido)

BTW, good topic!

Possibly the best rhyming couplet in song history courtesy of Brian Wilson:

"If Mars had life on it / I might find my wife on it"

Not only does that sum up his attitude at the time, but his writing style, and his very personal attitude to his songs.

That's the best I can think of right now.

Best line of all, IMO:

When you know that your time is close at hand
Maybe then you'll begin to understand
Life down here is just a strange illusion
"Hallowed be thy Name", Iron Maiden

Isobel makes love upon national monuments
With style, and enthusiasm and anyone at all
Isobel's done Stonehenge and the Houses of Parliament
But so far little Isobel's never played the Albert Hall
Jake Thackray

I can't play squash or go out jogging
For fear my heart is going to burst
I think that beds were made for sleeping
And that's a whole lot bloody worse
"Jesus Christ, I'm nearly forty", Billy Connolly

And oh, so many more...

I've got a few more:

"'Cause it makes me that much stronger. Makes me work a little bit harder. It makes me that much wiser. So thanks for making me a fighter. Made me learn a little bit faster. Made my skin a little bit thicker. Makes me that much smarter. So thanks for making me a fighter." (Fighter---Christina Aguilera) Well those lines do give me inspiration.

"And i have made mistakes in my life that i just can't hide." (Searching My Soul---Vonda Shepard)

(rather obscure, but...)

Now my whole world opens up
In different lines and tunes
With the highways
Making up the verse
And then suddenly
I see the light of something called the moon
And though my path is planned
It's not rehearsed
So I move along
To the next thing on the list
Knowing full well
That some of them just don't exist
But I am finally alone
And where my foot steps down
Is where it's home

Sheryl Crow - My Favourite Mistake
"Did you know,
could you tell that you were the only one
that I ever loved.
Now everything’s so wrong.
Did you see me walking by?
Did it ever make you cry?
You're my favourite mistake..."

Bille Ray Martin - Your Loving Arms
"Time after time I have needed a reason,
just to get inside your world.
Love seems the only conclusion that I'm guilty of...

Sometimes the way that you act makes me wonder,
what I am to you,
and sometimes I can’t stand the way that I’m acting,
to be part of the things you do’’

Third Eye Blind - Never Let You Go
"You said that I changed,
well maybe I did.
Even if I changed,
what's wrong with it?
I never let you go..."

Go Go's - Forget That Day
"Now you’re fine,
I’m not ok, and I can only stay away,
I can only kneel and pray,
try and try to forget that day"

Jam – Bitterest Pill
"The love I gave hangs in sad coloured mocking shadows"

Idlewild – Let Me Sleep Next To The Mirror
"For every word that you write, they don’t mean much as barricades"

Bangles - I'll Set You Free
"I remember words that fell like coins into a wishing well"

and sometimes we would spend the night
just rolling around on the floor
and I remember even though it felt soft at the time
I always used to wake up sore..
(THE CURE - CATCH)

In starlit nights I saw you
So cruelly you kissed me
Your lips a magic world
Your sky all hung with jewels
(ECHO & THE BUNNYMEN - KILLING MOON)

Since we broke up
I'm using lipstick again
I'll suck my tongue
As a remembrance of you
(BJORK - POSSIBLY MAYBE)

If I should die this very moment
I wouldn't fear
For I've never known completeness
Like being here
Wrapped in the warmth of you
Loving every breath of you
Still in my heart this moment
Or it might burst
Could we stay right here
Until the end of time until the earth stops turning
Want to love you until the seas run dry
I've found the one I've waited for
(LAMB - GORECKI A very beautiful song and definitely one of my favourites)

Forgot to include these 2:
I was scared, I was scared
Tired and underprepared
But I wait for it
And if you go, if you go
And leave me down here on my own--Coldplay~"In My Place"it's times like these you learn to live again
it's times like these you give and give again
it's times like these you learn to love again
it's times like these time and time again--Foo Fighters~"Times Like These"

my heart's in overdrive
and you're behind the steering wheel
the darkness, "i believe in a thing called love"

you said you loved me more than toast
but less than a staple gun

'cause i know i'll just say something stupid

and you don't want to talk to me
'cause you know what i'll turn out to be
i said i was cool, but i can't lie to you

Quoting:
Some sarcasm in the song 'Eve of Destruction': "Hate your next-door neighbor, but don't forget to say grace."
End Quote

That entire song is basically nothing but great lines.

From Dream Theater's "Pull Me Under"

This world is spinning around me
This world is spinning without me
Every day brings future to past
Every breath brings me one less to my last
