Subject: Events That Changed Your Life

Written By: Indy Gent on 01/29/04 at 08:36 p.m.

I would like to know what event or events that happened to you would you consider life-changing. How did it change your life? Was it for better or for worse? Was it an event in history or a personal happening? Mine would be when my sister gave me her cat for Christmas in 1988. I have spent lots of money on toys and food for my cat, sometimes at the expense of getting a social life. But I would do the same because Clarence has been so special to me and the lives he has touched.

Over my life I have had what I call "Fork in the road moments".

When you look back to a particular date and realise the choice you made that day altered your life.

Xmas Eve 1988 is my biggest fork in the road. (weird Indy - your event was Xmas 88 too !!!).

I was working in a pub in London.  I had phoned a paper and asked to be set up with an Austrian millionaire they had done an article on.  He was seeking a travel companion to join him on his new huge expensive catamaran - sailing around the UK and down to the mediteranean etc etc.

He was to come to the pub that night to meet me.

During the day - before he arrived - I was serving two brothers and we got talking about our time in the US as they had just returned from there and I had just left there.

There was a connection with one of the brothers and when I said I had a blind date later that night he tried to talk me out of it.

Anyway I went on the blind date and really enjoyed the company of the Austrian.

But something made me turn down his offer of sailing to the med with him.  I decided I wanted to get to know the younger of the brothers better.

Long story short - I married the younger brother and he turned out to be a drunken gambling addicted violent creep.

So - if I went back to my fork in the road day and made the other decision - to sail off with a millionaire who had climbed Everest and Mont Blanc and lived an exciting life - how would my life had turned out ?

I have no doubt my choice that day changed my life.  It was completely against character for me and for the year I was with the creep I became a person so unlike me (tolerating violence etc).  Its made me somewhat cynical and untrusting about relationships etc.  It made me hate guys who drink - even the ones that can actually handle their drink.

Spring 2002:  Tiffany Reck tells me that I really should ask this girl Chrissy to prom.  I take her advice.  My life is never the same again.

When I got my dog Clancy when I was 9, it wont be easy when the day he passes away comes around.  When my last grandparent passed away because that ment I no longer had any grandparents left and at the time I was only 16.  Working at Wal-Mart made me realize how poorly run that company is, it amazes me how it has lasted this long and still continues to grow.  Going to college, which I am still in the process of doing, though it has little effect now it definitly will later in life.

That is very sweet. As an animal lover and someone that works with animals on a daily basis I can appreciate that story. Clarence is a very lucky cat. :)

Thanks, SmithsGirl. Considering that he didn't get a life threatening illness until last year, I guess he is very lucky. I'll miss him when he's gone. :'(

The biggest "fork in the road" for me started in 1988-89. I was kind of stagnate until 92 when I decided to go back to school. Best decision I ever made in my life. I met my husband-not to mention getting my degree-B.A. (even though I still have to finish up my M.A.) Now, my life is WONDERFUL! I have had smaller "forks in the road" before and since but that was the big one.

When I found out I was pregnant.  It motivated me to kick my lump of an ex out of my house.  I figured I was obligated to support the baby, the grown up needed to make his own way in the world.  I figured out my expenses so I wouldn't have to work two jobs anymore, and brought me back to church.  I don't know what it would have been like had I not gotten pregnant.
