For all of us on here who celebrate Lent, I have a little known piece of "trivia" for you...
Did you know that you can have whatever you gave up for Lent on Sundays? I've been Catholic for 32 years, and even went to Catholic schools and I didn't know this. Here's why...
There are 40 days in Lent. If you count the number of days between Ash Wednesday & Easter Sunday, but skip Sundays, you get 40 days.

I am avoiding chocolate as a personal expression of my faith, even tho' I'm not Catholic. I can't say it's only choclolate Candy i'm avoiding tho' because there is also ice cream, and milk shakes and granola bars w/choc' chips...oh, and baked cookies :-[ So, I will have to switch all these things to strawberry for a time...except the baked cookies, oh but there are strawberry Newtons, eh?
And the 40 days sounds right, but if you are doing something because you are faithful, then shouldn't you continue to "give up" that item on a Sunday too?
I understand that you can also do more good deeds or do more faith studying than you normally might instead of giving something up.
My friend also told me you give it up forever if you decide to give something up for Lent. I think he is crazy, but he's older than I am and it's not worth an argument. He's not Catholic either, so he can't understand my Protestant decision of observing Lent this way.

I'm Protestant myself, but I'm still giving up something- being lazy. I've tried to do a few extra chores each day, but this morning I had dreadful labyrinthitis and couldn't manage to get my own breakfast or anything, so I'll have to try harder tomorrow!

OMG, I forgot ash Wednesday :o. I need to go to church more :-/.
To think of what to give up is going to be a hard one.

I just found out that my mom knew about this. Of course, she never told us so all those years we gave up chocolate, we could've been eating it on Sundays ::) :P

So let me get this straight....if I give up something, say, candy, I can eat some on Sundays (if I wanted to)? Wow, I always thought that if you gave up something for Lent, that applied to the whole season of Lent. Thanks for the info. 8) ;)

You got it. Heck, I went to a Catholic school and I never learned this. Oh, and last night, I found out my best friend's mom knew it too, but she said "it was just easier to not let you have it at all" ::) ;D :P

Ah yes, I remember observing Lent during my Catholic years. One time, I had to give up sweets and sodas for 40 days. And complaining whenever I saw a Catholic eat meat on Fridays. I slipped a couple of times, when I ate the ham sandwich Friday that I made that Wednesday, totally oblivious that we were still in the Lenten season. I had to fess up to Mom after that. :-[

I have a similar story: five years ago I accidentally ate a sliced-ham sandwich on a Lenten Friday, forgetting that it was Lent. I really felt I had to make up for it, so three weeks later, I went without meat on a Saturday.

I grew up Catholic as well. When I started reading the Bible, I could no longer stay in the Catholic church.
What do you guys make of this passage of scripture?
1 Timothy 4:1-5
1 Now the Spirit expressly says that in latter times some will depart from the faith, giving heed to deceiving spirits and doctrines of demons, 2 speaking lies in hypocrisy, having their own conscience seared with a hot iron, 3 forbidding to marry, and commanding to abstain from foods which God created to be received with thanksgiving by those who believe and know the truth. 4 For every creature of God is good, and nothing is to be refused if it is received with thanksgiving; 5 for it is sanctified by the word of God and prayer.
