I'm fine thank you very much, Meli. I hope you didn't get withdrawal symptoms from the absence of the board - I did . . . A little.

I did google searching really. I was looking up websites for The Toy Dolls and 'Machoman' Randy Savage. Eclectic or what?

You mention in another thread that you're involved with the post office's annual non-perishables drive.  Are there any types of items that are always badly needed, but which most people don't think of when they're donating to this particular drive and which you'd encourage us to include in our donations?

I was asked that same question on that local talk show I did yesterday. Besides non-parishables (and NOT out-dated stuff) food items, toiletries are always needed-i.e. toilet paper, toothpaste, shampoo, soap and such. Another that was recomended is not including home-made foods (which are usually yummy but really can't be used), but also items that in glass. Postal Workers will probably have a lot of food that can be heavy. If there are glass jars and such, it can easily be broken. What you can do is call your local food shelf and see exactly what they are short of. If people called here at this time, I would tell them peanut butter. Your food shelf may need something else. But thank you so much for asking. That is a wonderful question.

Wrong tense Howard !  ;)  Being on the other side of the world, in the other hemisphere, our winter is your summer.

So traditionally a Christmas Day in Queensland is spent sweltering in 100 degree heat and high humidity, a far cry from the snowy american and european christmas scenes we see on television  :(

So to answer you question best I can, yes, we HAD a very hot summer just gone, and it is FINALLY cooling down, and it's almost the end of April..... :-\

First, thanks for including me in the conversation. Yes, M>L>B>are my full initials. I am hopeless when it comes to screen names, so I went with what is real & honestly my name without actually saying what it is.
Anyone wanna play guess my name??
And as for what I did once i realized C.G. went thru with the web upgrades....well, I tended to my college classwork, and looked at 5 different websites for coloring pages. I need them to keep the kids in sunday school occupied.  And I wrote everyone in my adddress book in email.
I don't think I was half as bothered by the change because I don't have the  computer availability to  surf at home.So i save up all my  surfin' for when I'm on campus or visiting the local library.  Sad but true.

Fuss, you ever get heavy snow in Queensland?

Howard

Hi Howard

Queensland is virtually all 'sub tropical'....

There is a place near the New South Wales/Queensland border called Stanthorpe.  Lots of of grapes and apples are grown there.  It gets snow about once a year maybe, but not heavy.

My father emigrated to Brisbane from England when he was 4.  He's now 84.  He tells me that in that 80 years, it has snowed in Brisbane 4 times.  Technically.  What he means is that a few flakes have fallen from the sky but the moment they hit the ground they had already melted.... :(

So I won't be investing in snow tires any time soon, ya know  ;)

To give you a better perspective of the weather extremes we have here, a few months ago I couldn't catch the train home because during the day a train had derailed at my station, because the heat had buckled the tracks.... :o  Therein lies the sort of reason why you find me from time to time on this board whinging about the heat where I live  ;D

Good guess, but not exactly, Howard.

When I first bought my computer many moons ago, they asked me to come up with an email addy. Well, under such pressure all I could think of was my last name (Gamble) and my old high school nickname (fish) and thus was born "gamblefish".

Thanks for asking, Howard (You're so funkee!!)...

Just to spend the afternoon? No...I think if I ever was to go anywhere where I'd be spending a few hours on a plane, I'd want to be there at least a few days. (Though when I went to Hamilton, Ontario via Toronto, I was only there for a day and a half or so.) Do I want to go to New York at all? I don't know. There are other places I want to visit more. How hot of summers do you get down under?

Subject: Re: Something you want to ask/tell another member

Written By: BrianMannixGirl on 05/08/04 at 12:33 pm

How hot of summers do you get down under?

Depend on which state.  Over here in the west our summer started with a 42c (108f) week in the first week of November and basically continued along those lines till mid April.  And summer is lasting an abnormal length of time this year - last week we had 30c (86f) days - thats just bizarre for May (specially since its snowing on the east coast in Victoria and Tasmania).

My mums town - 2 hours north of Perth in the wheatbelt recorded an average temp of 47c thru summer - and I cant convert that as my chart only goes up to 43 !  So no idea how hot it was in Farenheit.

Today it cooled down to 23c (74f) and yesterday we got officially our first drop of rain for the year.

Who was saying it doesnt snow in Aus ?  I missed it !  The only states that have never recorded snowfall are Northern Territory and South Australia.

Western Australia gets snow between July and October - heaviest falls in the Stirling Ranges.  Perth recorded a fall in late October 1991 during a freak week. I have photos of it on my lawn.

Tasmania - Mt Wellington in Hobart is currently covered in white after a nice fall last weekend and has recorded snow during summer.

Blue Mountains 2 hours out of Sydney has regular snowfall during winter.

Snowy Mountain Range (named so because of snow funnily enuff) are covered from April to October (sometimes as late as November).  The ski fields top up with artificial snow when needed but have also had to close regulrly due to blizzards.

Melbournes outmost suburbs have recorded falls in past years.

Canberra - regular snowfalls thru winter - play dad use to play rugby on an ice covered field during snow blizzards - he has the frostbitten deformed toe to prove it !!  ick !

Delegate - teeny village on the NSW/VIC border where I spent the millennium NYE party - snowed on New Years Day - while the rest of the country was sweltering.  My dad grew up there and use to ski to school.

These are all the places I have personally lived in or visited during winter and experienced decent snowfall.

So we aint exactly ALL desert !!  Plenty of high country areas, rainforrests, tall timber forrests, etc.

edited - thought of another one - I went to my Grandfather funeral a couple of years ago in a little town called Wellington - bout 400 km northwest of Sydney.  It was June so I expected it to be cold - but I definately wasnt prepared for snow - I nearly froze at the outdoor service.

My question is toward Fuss and BMG.

But is it a dry heat? Because they say that here in Montreal we have the most extreme climate in North America. Because our winters will drop well below -25c, and our summers will climb as high as +30c. But our humidity is intense during the summer, most likely due to the fact that we are an island. Anyone can take the heat, it's the humidity that's a killer.

I'm probably qualified to answer this too. ;)

It's extremely humid, particularly in Queensland.  In Sydney, during the height of summer, we endure many days of it being well over the 90% mark. We're an island too, albeit a very large one, so the further inland you travel, the dryer the heat. Agreed, the humidity is a killer alright ! :(

I think the hottest it's ever been over here is 40c, but that's too hot! Because with that heat you get thousands upon thousands of forest fires. Vancouver winters are usually fairly mild (5-10c or so), but I'm not technically in Vancouver, so it can get to -15c.

Mandamoo already answered this perfectly, but i just wanna add my support to her answer.

No, in Queensland, where I live, it's never a dry heat.  When it is hot, it is invariably humid as hell to go with it.

Before we had our children, my wife and I were lucky enough to visit Australia. We did a 5 week tour, which was great but really not enough time to do it justice. Our first stop was Perth in about the second week of December and the temperature hit 42.8 degrees Celsius.

We went to a beach (Cottesloe?) and while I went for a dip my wife went for an ice cream. She didn't return for over an hour.
I was beginning to think she'd been abducted when she finally showed up. Apparently she'd collapsed from the heat while queuing for the ice cream and had been taken into the lifeguards' recovery room, where she was subjected to many lectures on the idiocy of Poms getting straight off the plane and hitting the beach without due care and attention...which was fair enough as that's pretty much what we'd done!

Whereabouts in Western Australia are you BMG? I have many happy memories of Safety Bay (south of Perth) where we stayed with my wife's relatives.

Sometimes they use snow-making machines to amplify the snow cover in the NSW ski fields, particularly toward the end of the season in September and at the beginning in early April, but I can assure you that most of the snow in the Snowy Mountains is real, fall from the sky, snow. I live in the Blue Mts near Sydney and I can assure you it definitely snows here. We had gentle snowflakes fall during our wedding. They melted almost instantly they reached the ground, but it was definitely real snow.

I agree air conditioning is certainly is a must, Mandamoo. Though while I was in Spain, I got a sore throat as a result. It lasted for about 4 days!  :(

Unfortunately Bobby, like Fussy said our sun is a killer, literally !  I was put off years ago in the quest for a tan, after seeing family and friends...including my parents...having to visit skin specialists on a regular basis to get cancerous lesions removed. :(

Also, baking yourself to a crisp.......over time your skin tends to resemble an old leather handbag. :P Not for me thanks ! ;D

You most likely got your sore throat from the air being too dry I think, Bobby  ;)

Dangerous, Bobby...go easy...

Worshipping the sun is the one thing you'll never find me doing...if anyone's prone to burning, it's me...!

I don't go out in search of a tan but if I'm out I slap the sun cream on.

The English never seem to make good sun worshippers - we never seem to get used to hot weather for a start.  ;D

I live in Colorado Springs...our elevation has a lot to do with the stregnth of the suns rays and the dryness. We're at 6,500 feet here and so being closer to the sun makes it more dangerous. Albeit, we don't get as hot as most places, in fact it's not often that we break 100 degrees, but it's very dry here...humidity most of the time hovers around 5-20%.  I used to live in Mesa Arizona and that was hot...everyday over 100 with lows in the 80s-90s!  The ONLY thing bearable was the humidity being very low there as well.  :)

I think the fact that we're pretty close to the Equator, and the Tropic of Capricorn runs right through the country, explains the heat and strength of the sun here. Also, that big hole in the ozone layer isn't too far away.....explaining the large amount of UV rays that filter through ! :(

I actually met Mister Rogers way back when.  He went to the same doctor as my Dad and he was in the waiting room at the time.  I was like 13 back then, so of course I "played it cool"  8)  and didn't make a fuss.

Well both are mentioned in this Australian song called 'Waltzing Matilda' and here is a website of the song:

http://www.anu.edu.au/people/Roger.Clarke/WM/WMText.html

More importantly, there are key words that are high-lighted so that you can click on them to find out what they mean. The 'billy can' is mentioned as 'billy'.

I am falling behind reading this board as I wasnt able to get in the past two weekends.  So sorry for the delay in replying here.

Our first two months of summer in Perth are generally a bone dry heat.  Then after christmas cyclone season hits up north and the direction of the cyclones winds pushes severe humidity down to us while at the same time blowing easterly nasty hot temps in - so in Feb this year we recorded 42c with 85% humidity - which was a killer - especially since the power commission couldnt cope with demand and announced a $10,000 fine to anyone who turned an air con on.

Whereabouts in Western Australia are you BMG? I have many happy memories of Safety Bay (south of Perth) where we stayed with my wife's relatives.

Hi Maddog - I live in Perth, but have also lived way up in the north west in Iron Ore country and my mum lives north east of Perth in the wheatbelt.  If you get the chance to ever visit again - try September.  Its spring and is gorgeous, the entire state is covered in a mutli colour spectacular of wildflowers and the weather is generally perfect and mild.

Getting a tan isn't worth dying for, it's highly overrated IMNSHO

I second that FussB - I had my first skin cancers removed from my neck when I was still a teen - after 18 years of sunbaking and have more that I really should have checked as they are showing all the signs of being the nasty kind.

Artificial - Okay, maybe Tasmania is real because they're so close to Antartica, but Snowy Mountains are fake. I've seen it, I've been told.

Meli girl ya gotta get out more and actually see the country you live in !  I have lived in over 150 places in Australia in my 35 years (and visited even more) and have seen, played in, built snowmen in, photographed, watched fall from the sky, got stuck in, froze in, driven thru blizzards in - geniune real snow in most states (other than NT,SA & QLD).

A couple of the ski resorts put a layer of manmade snow over the top of the nights fall if it has gone too hard to ski on - so they cover it with softer stuff - and during a lean season a few years ago they relied on the man made - but thats just the ski resorts themselves - they make up about 10% land mass of the mountain range.  The actual Snowy Mountain range is massive and many peaks that are unaccessible to man are covered with a snow cap all year round.  I have flown over them in mid summer in a chopper to see the coverage and its incredible.

I cant find the other post I was going to reply to :(  Someone was mentioning altitude and weather.  I have to say - when I lived in Lake Tahoe Cal/Nev we were at 8500ft and I had never lived at such high altitude and what I never expected was how dry the atmosphere was up there.  My skin - which has never needed a moisturisor in my whole life - dried up over night and I took to slathering myself 5 times a day.  I was a new experience for me.

Well I went to a little seaside town called Looe (yes pronounced 'Loo' lol) and it was quite nice. I had a big traditional cornish pasty and some rum and raisin ice cream so all in all I made a pig of myself. I was going to have a barbecue but the cold weather put me off - It was all done inside instead.

Sunday I didn't do a lot, I formatted the computer so it works better now. I watched 'Honey I shrunk the Kids' on DVD.

Well...

The Smiths stayed consistantly fabulous during their time together, whereas Morrissey's solo career started to go downhill (in my opinion) after 1994's Vauxhall And I album. That's when he started writing crappy songs like "Roy's Keen." :) However, I hear his new album is excellent (I still have yet to buy it), so he may be just as witty as ever!

In short...I prefer The Smiths...but Morrissey does have some great songs post-Smiths. :)

bobby and vile what did u guys to this weekend?

Nothing special. Rush and I bought a couple of LP's yesterday: Ha! Ha! Ha! by Ultravox! (John Foxx-era) and a Canadian compilation LP of John Foxx singles, self-titled. :)

Today: I went out for coffee with my mum. (Don't ask how it went.) Listened to all our Ultravox LP's and watched the season finale of The Simpsons.

We have such a fulfilling life! :D

Hi Fuss!  Thanks for asking.  :)

I'm doing fine.  I finally have access to a nice swimming pool so I am making it a point to go there at least once or twice a week.  I figure my kids should learn how to swim in no time now.

My love for pottery was something I picked up on my own while I was in college.  Believe it or not I didn't like it much at first because I had the worst time trying to center clay on the wheel.  But a little perseverence made it well worth my while.  My mother also does ceramics, but not as much as I do.

I haven't done as much travelling within the country as I'd like, but plan to eventually. :)

It's Powerslave who lives in the Blue Mountains, as does my parents. What part did your dad live in BMGirl ?

Git on out there Manda - we have an awesome land surrounding us :)  So much to see - so little time and funds !!

Where do your folks live ?  Dad and his wife lived on Roberts Pde in Hawkesbury Heights for a decade (well it was her house and I think she built it at least a decade before she met dad so she was a real local !!).  Its just near the suicide leap lookout with the great view.  They had a rough time with the 94 fires - lost everything except the house.  They moved up to Coffs Harbour about 3 or 4 years ago.

Yep, that's Daniel Striped Tiger of MisteRogers Neighborhood fame.

I actually met Mister Rogers way back when.  He went to the same doctor as my Dad and he was in the waiting room at the time.  I was like 13 back then, so of course I "played it cool"  8)  and didn't make a fuss.

In the mid80's i met Bob Keeshan"Capn. Kangaroo"  and he signed a copy of his latest (then) children's book for my little sister. A very sweet guy.  He stayed at that little book store for hours taking questions and pictures and meeting the parents and the kids. A True gentleman.

That's odd.  I've always been able to see your picture in the avatar.

I have noticed that if I don't "shut down" my computer completely (and instead just put it into "sleep mode" when I am not using it) I start getting the "Red X" at various web sites.  Then I reboot and all works again.

Let me see... I think I heard a version of it, or something, which may or may not have been The Quo...

But it was so long ago now, that I can't remember whether or not it was that I heard, or, for that matter, whether it was in fact the Poco version.

Funny what listening to music at 3 in the morning'll do to ya..

Bobo, are you still in search of 'The Quo's' version of 'The Price Of Love'? (Try thinking back...it has been a long time...!)

Only I've managed to get a copy, should you want it...

Subject: Re: Something you want to ask/tell another member

Bobo was the name of Mr. Burns' teddy bear on The Simpsons, back in an episode shown 1993 or so, starring The Ramones.

But I seem to vividly remember it being a nickname from when I was young, like, five or six. I don't know why this has stuck with me, I used to be able to remember, but I can't.

I hope this works good enough as a response!

That whole area is so stunning isnt it.  Every house has a wonderful view.  I remember being so scared watching the live coverage of the 94 fires as the camera crew kept focusing on the wagon wheels dad had on either side of his driveway.  I knew he had been evacuated down the Richmond but that didnt help cos Channel 7 just kept showing me pics of flames lapping at dads property.  Apparently it was the toughness of their windows that saved their house - if one had cracked the whole house would have gone up.  They lost all their wooden balconys and outdoor staircases, as well as their water tanks (not connected to town water up there), their sheds (containing loads of stuff), all the fencing dad had only built about 2 months earlier - lots of other stuff.  But like so any others in their street - they could have lost even more.

You saw the Rockies take on the Dodgers? Wow, I guess we were on opposing sides then, although that was over a decade ago. ;D I haven't been to a baseball game since 1996. Also, I have not been there yet (to Dodger Stadium, that is) to see the Rockies, Marlins, D'Backs, Brewers, or any American League team. I've seen all the NL teams that were in existence prior to 1993. ;)

Me and my bros and a friend went to a game at Coors Field back in 2000. The previous year we went to Wrigley for a Cubs game. And to be honest, we had a better time in Denver than in Chicago.(Apologies, Dagwood.) If you haven't been to Coors Field yet you really ought to get there sometime. IMHO, it's a masterpiece of architecture, with a neat mix of new and old styles.
