Plymouth, England - Bah! Rubbish city.  >:(  :)

Well, the Pilgrims (Plymouth Argyle FC) aren't looking too rubbish, Bobby...top of Division 2 and looking like promotion certainties...

I was originally from Peckham, part of the huge sprawling mess we all  know and love as 'the smoke' (London)...which became (almost) world famous as being the 'home' of The Trotters in 'Only Fools And Horses', and namechecked by Alexei Sayle in ''Ullo John Gotta New Motor?' ('Is there life in Peckham?'...not much, I'd say...!)

Continuing the football theme, Peckham's 'adopted' club is (unbelievably and somehow) in the Cup Final this year...Millwall...???!!!

Happily, I escaped several years ago to the more leafier surroundings of Bexleyheath...which gave the world Kate Bush (and that's about it!)

Sir Mick of Jagger and Keef 'walking corpse' Richards originated from the next town along from here...Dartford...

Just a question - who outnumbers who on these boards?  Are there more Queenslanders or New South Welshmen?  There's Fuss, me and Jaytee - where do all the other Aussies come from (I know BMG is from Perth). How many more Aussies are there?  Just wondering.

Oh - and mandamoo - you can HAVE Steve Irwin if you want him!!!

From NSW we had Moo, Mrgazpacho, Goreripper, and another young woman whose name I am afraid has escaped me.... :-Oh - and mandamoo - you can HAVE Steve Irwin if you want him!!!

Yeah I have to admit Paul - since moving to my apartment in August - I do enjoy the 8 minute stroll to work and its just a further 6 minutes into the city.

I work next to someone who drives 45 minutes to work and I think thats just inhuman.  When Dad lived in Sydney his commute was 2 hours each way.  I just dont want to ever spend that much time getting to and from work - those hours are mine !!!!

I live in Swindon, UK. The name is derived from Swinetown, which pretty accurately sums it up. It's most famous for The Magic Roundabout, a pentagon of five roundabouts all linked into one big one (gives you an indication of how s**t a place it is!). 'Famous' people from Swindon include Melinda Messenger, Billie Piper, Mark Lamarr, XTC. If I could work out how to post a picture, I would, but you're not missing much...it would need a flattering photo (like the earlier one posted of Bexleyheath) to make it seem even habitable, let alone desirable- if anyone wants me to tell them a sordid tale of life in Swindon, I can PM it to them, but it's not really suitable for a 'family' board!

It's time to reveal the truth - this is where I live: the unsurpassed "city"of Den Helder (approx. 43,000 inh), in the northwest of the Netherlands, a "city' famous for absolutely nothing, without any noteworthy history, where no man or woman of any fame or claim was ever born. The only things I can tell you is that it's always windy overhere, and that Den Helder is our national navy harbour.

Spanish Fort is another Civil War remembrance city in the South.  Some people have ditches, foxholes, etc. from the war in their yard, and they aren't allowed to get rid of them because they are landmarks.  You can see Civil War reenactments.  8)

I have to rephrase this a little bit. It turns out there were some people of any claim or fame born in Den Helder, most of them being only famous in the Netherlands however (tv presenters, a politician, a comedian etc.). There may be one man of some international fame however: Anton Pieck.

As to the pictures I posted: I'm really sorry, but there isn't anything worth posting to be found on the internet. Seems like I have to do some photographing myself. I know I was rather negative in my comments about Den Helder, but it has some nice places too. Just be patient, OK?

It's not bad weather permitting.  ;) ;D

The main problem is that it has no real retail outlet (blamed by the poor importing motorway routes Plymouth has). The City Centre has it's stores and a shopping complex is going to built but it's going to be nothing like the major cities in England, never mind anywhere else.  ::)

Did you mean Crikey, Alco ?  ;D  Well, I know what you mean.  Compared to Sydney for example, Brisbane is small and quite sedate.  Then again, that's the way we like it.  That said, it's population is 2 million, so small is a relative term I guess.

All I know is I can stand at a "Don't Walk" sign in Brisbane and not have someone beg me for money, or cigrettes, or try to sell me drugs.  I quickly worked out in 1998 when I had to work in Sydney for a while, why everyone crossed against the light!  If you stood still, you became an easy target  ;D ;D ;D
