Don't know if anyone has ever asked this before or not, but I am wondering what movie you all think has the best ending of all time?

I have to go with Usual Suspects myself.  That movie by far has the best ending to any movie I have ever seen and I highly doubt I will ever see one better in the future.  I have seen other movies use the shock method to end their movies but they can't come anywhere near the shock value that Usual Suspects hits you with at the end.  The reaction my friend got from it seems to be the best description of it, once the movie ended he sat on the couch for about 3 minutes not moving and the only thing he could say was "Holy Sh*t".

The Natural :)  The way that baseball was crushed and destroyed the lights as he ran around the bases in an electric shower of triumph...wow.

I remember freaking out at the end of "Seven"  :o

I can't quite remember why, but I recall it was very unexpected.

I also recall that the ending to "Wild Things" was rather unexpected.....

I know it isn't exactly a warm fuzzy ending, but I loved the ending of Terminator 3.  I sat and stared at the screen for a couple of minutes before I could move.

I really liked the ending to "The Passion of the Christ", probably because I know what happens next.  ;D

The best ending for a "feel good, cheesy" movie (even though it's one of my favorite movies) would have to be Grease.

"28 Days Later" was pretty good.

I like movies that have surprise endings, which it's hard to surprise me because I usually have them figured out half way through.

It took me a while to figure out Sixth Sense and Unbreakable...I loved the ending to the Sixth Sense but Unbreakable bugged me because I couldn't think of Samuel L. Jackson as ... well, you gotta see the movies, they're good :)

Signs was a "sign" that the director was trying a bit TOO hard though :P

I liked the Sixth Sense, but had it figured out.  I wasn't crazy about Unbreakable.  I totally agree about Signs.

The best ending was "Hoosiers", but only because I knew it was based on real life and it ended the same way.
For surprise endings, it would have to be the mind blowing ending to "The Fury". Just when you think the bad guys win... ;)

I thought the ending to The Usual Suspects was completely obvious, unnecessary, and tacked-on.

The best ending, I thought, was the end of Say Anything. ?Just that simple little sound, that concludes everything.

Are you kidding?  It turned into a JC Penney ad!

I love the ending to a lot of movies.

I love the end of Ghost, its so sad, yet so sweet, she gets to say goodbye!

I love the end of Pulp Fiction, I don't know if anyone would agree with me, but I like it.

I also love the end of Say Anything, Ferris Bueller, Sixteen Candles, The Wedding Singer, Ocean's Eleven, and so many more!!

Of course, I love the ending to all kinds of bad movies too, cuz it means I don't have to watch them anymore!!!! :D

I'd have to say the ending credits in "The Passion of Christ" was great.
I recall my face feelin stiff because I wore the same expression during the whole flick: :o

I love the ending of Jaws and ET.

And I am going to admit it here for the first time !!  Dont hit me please - I just barely TOLERATE much of Titanic - but I love the ending when we skim past photos of Rose showing that she did and achieved all the things she wanted to thru her life - that kills me every time.

I also love the ending to a little sorta unknown movie called Somewhere In Time with Chris Reeve and Jayne Seymour.

In Aussie films I think the greatest ending on film of all time is Gallipoli.  The vision is literally iconic.
The soldiers, including the gorgeous Mark Lee, are lined in the trenches awaiting the whistle that will tell them its time to go over the wall to attack the turks.
Cut to Mel Gibson running desperately thru the trenches with the message that the attack has been withdrawn.
Cut to the terrified commander shaking as he puts his whistle to his lips and blows.
Cut to Mel screaming and falling in agony against the trench wall knowing he hasnt got to them in time.
Cut to Mark (a runner prior to the war - muttering the mantra that made him run fast in races) , running out of the trench - side on to camera.  The camera freezes as he is cut to ribbons by riflefire in the pose of a runner breasting the race ribbon.

Credits roll - but I never see them thru the tears :(

You've got me wanting to see that movie now.  It sounds good!

Just last night I watched Kate and Leopold.  I thought the ending was very good, if you like romantic movies.

Its a brilliant movie all round Onaree - I am sure you will find it in a video store that stocks oldies.
And yes gotta agree with you - Kate & Leopolds little twists make it a great ending :)

Of course it helps that it starred Hugh Jackman!  Yummy!  Isn't he, as Leopold, just the kind of man every woman dreams of?  I'd go back in time for him.  ;D

Definitely, that ending was quite a revelation.

My favorite ending has to be the original Planet of the Apes.  This is where Charlton Heston finally realizes where he is.

I sobbed at the end of that movie.  The only sound you could hear in the theatre was people crying.

Life Is Beautiful also made me cry.

I thought the ending to ?Penn & Teller Get Killed? is great.
They both end up dead as a result of sick and mean practical jokes they play on one another going horribly wrong.
The ending scene is comically exaggerated as the camera pulls back from the scene of their deaths, one by one, as each person that comes to their apartment to find them, first the next door neighbor, then the delivery man, then a cop, etc. all arrive at the scene, distraught and unnerved by the carnage, they kill themselves too?
It?s punctuated by the playing of the Bee-Gee?s tune ?I Started a Joke? (perfect song choice) and Penn?s voice over...?That?s it folks, we?re dead, end of the movie, no dream sequences or trickery, that?s it, we?re dead?.?
Well, I thought it was funny anyway, I have a twisted sense of humor.  ;D

The best ending to a movie is The Texas Chainsaw Massacre.
Having the girl (whatever her name was) escape in the back of that pickup, while the camera had shots of her chilling screams, and Leatherface "dancing" with his chainsaw.

...if that makes any sense the way I explained it?

Gosh jaytee I wasnt even remembering Life is Beautiful and you just brought it all back to me.  I can safely say that never mind the supposed "surprise" endings of Crying Game, 6Th Sense and Thelma and Louise (none of which I found very surprising !!!) - the end to Life is Beautiful shocked the heck out of me.

"Sixth Sense", absolutely the best ever---I actually caught myself applauding the non-attending director Shmalyan (spelling wrong I know) for perfectly fudgeing with my mind for two hours.  I wish he was able to carry that forward with "Unbreakable"--unfortunately, THAT was a BIG, BIG letdown...the world's longest, protracted Twilight Zone episode.

Add:
Eyes Wide Shut ("We have to...") ;)

2001: A Space Odyssey (yeah, many people hate it because they don't get it...deal with it)

Wait Until Dark (the original "the bad guy isn't really dead yet" ploy, way back in the mid-60s--still gives me the heebie-jeebies)

Carrie (not a film I enjoy watching at all, but worthy of mention here, of course)

Star Wars (a triumphant, "job well done" kind of scene, simple, wordless, which the series has not been able to acheive since then)

Hi, I'm a bit late on this (was on holiday), but does the phrase "Gwyneth Paltrow's decapitated head delivered in a box" stir any memories?  :o

Identity and Twisted both have good endings.  I love movies where the plot keeps shifting.  Just when you think you have figured it out, they show you something that lets you know that can't be it.

Identity's ending sucked...such a huge build up and an even more huge let down.

* Thread from the dead *

My favourite endings to a film for different reasons is probably the Peter Sellers movie called 'Being There' which is about an incredibly simple gardener called Chance who, via circumstances beyond his control, becomes a friend to a wealthy businessman and a political media celebrity.

The other is probably The Woody Allen film 'Bananas'. What technically should be a happy ending for the protagonist is twisted into disappointment. A very funny ending to a very funny film.
