Subject: Super Mario 17?

Written By: MasterSplinter on 06/09/04 at 10:34 am

If we were to count all the Major "Super Mario" video games from all the Nintendo Systems

What "Super Mario" number would we be up to?

Super Mario 3(8-bit NES)
Super Mario 4(Super Mario World) 16-bit Super NES, in 1991 and so on

Only for Nintendo?

For the Atari 2600 and 5400 there was the first mario game called "Mario Brothers" in which Mario and Luigi jumped around a sewer....in Mario 3, if youre playing two players and click on the other player, you can play it

Donky Kong for the Arcade (and Nintendo and Atari) had Mario as the "Carpenter" who needed to save the Princess from Donky Kong...does this count?

Two player Tetris uses Mario and Luigi as each player

For the original NES:

Super Mario Brothers (1985)
Super Mario Brothers 2 (1988)
Super Mario Brothers 3 (1990)
Dr Mario

Game Boy:
Dr Mario
Tetris
Yoshi
Yoshi's Island
Super mario Land
Super mario land 2

Super NES:
Super Mario World (1991)
Super Mario World 2
Super Mario world 3

Nintendo 64:
Mario 64
Bash Brothers
Mario Party

and of course Atari:
Mario Brothers
Donky Kong

Mario Brothers and Donkey Kong don't count because they're not "Super" Mario.  ;)

There was even a Mario Brothers for the 8 bit machines (Spectrum, Amstrad, Commodore 64 etc). It was done in single screen format and it involved killing crabs in sewers. It was nothing like what Mario became but it was a legitimate Mario game.

Yeah, they included that one on the GameBoy Advance version of Super Mario Brothers 2.

There's Donkey Kong 64 for Nintendo 64, and a new one possibly to be called "Donkey Konga"(a music-type game).
And there were sequels to the original Donkey Kong, they were Donkey Kong Jr and Donkey Kong 3(which wasn't that big a hit).

Anyway, let's look:

mario party, mario kart, mario rpg and smash bros. don't count as true mario games.  But we could call mario 64 a true mario game, as well as mario sunshine, so if you include mario world, that might be 6 games.  Then there's Yoshi's Island which was called Super Mario World 2, even though it takes place before the entire Mario series, so that's a prequel.

In fact, I saw some pictures of a new Mario Bros. type game(side scrolling) for Nintendo's new portable DS system coming out, so who knows what that would be?

As for the original Mario Bros., let's call that another prequel ;)
