Subject: Age Range 2

Written By: T on 07/15/04 at 12:41 am

About two year ago I started a topic on this very website about the ages of people who come to this site. Now that I'm a member of this website agiain, I would like to know about the different age ranges of people who come here, now that we have some new members now. Starting with me I'm in my early 20s and I'm happy to be back.

I was born in 1975.  I just turned 29 recently.

A friend of mine and I were talking about getting older a couple of days ago, and neither of us can believe that we are now the full fledged grown ups and adults of the world.  When we were growing up in the 80s and 90s, we thought were going to be young and like kids forever.  When I hear about a 30 year old, I still think "dang that's really old".  Then I'm like, "oh wait, I guess I'm basically that age now."  A lot of the people I grew up with in school  are now in their early 30s.    ???

I remember when my parents where in their 30s....ughhh      :-[

Ah. In '92 they moved 6th grade to junior high and coined the term "middle school"; some high schools already had a 9th grade by then.

Down here in Georgia, you go to elementary school and then to middle school.  After that, it's high school.

Makes sense...but what grades does each school level consist of? In California, middle school/junior high was grades 6-8, and high school was grades 9-12. (Prior to June 1992, they were 7-9 and 10-12, respectively.)

I don't know if different is the right word.  I went to one school from age 5 to age 14.  I went to another school from age 14 to age 18.  It's just the way they do things up there.

So it might be considered different in a sense.

Tomayto, tomotto.

At any rate, I went to a number of different elementary schools, finishing elementary school in 6th grade in June 1992. From '92 to '94 I was in middle school (although we still said junior high, using the terms interchangeably), and from '94 to '98 I was in high school
And for the past eight years, I've been in college! I never thought I'd still be going to school at age 26. Which reminds me...I will be that old in five weeks!

My parents and I all went to school in the L.A. Unified School District, so it probably differs from other districts in the state.

They added 9th grade to high school the year after I entered high school...

I was the same way.  I went to Jr. High for grades 7 - 9    Then the following year they moved 9th grade up to the High School

Makes sense...but what grades does each school level consist of? In California, middle school/junior high was grades 6-8, and high school was grades 9-12. (Prior to June 1992, they were 7-9 and 10-12, respectively.)

Well, I live in California - northern - and prior to '82 the schools were K-6, 7-9 and 10-12.  Then they changed to K-8, 6-8 and 9-12.  HOWEVER. . . .  the part of the state I teach in - Central Valley - the schools are K-8 then HIgh School 9-12.  Confusing - but different districts do things different ways.

When I started Junior high in 1994, we still went to school with the 9th graders. I don't think that changed until about 2-3 years later for us (Antioch School District)

Mmm..okay. If you say so.

My parents and I all went to school in the L.A. Unified School District, so it probably differs from other districts in the state.

Yeah, I'd say so.  District to district.  The problem with JSUSD was that the area was growing so fast the schools were having a hard time keeping up with the load.  The decision was made to reorganize the district and farm students out to the outlying schools (all still within the district).  This, I still remember, was controvercial, with angry parents and the District Superintendent being recalled over the flap.  Like I said, this didn't affect me since I was in the 6th grade at the time and the school I was attending was the former "Grade School" picked to be the "Middle School".  A Middle School it remains to this day...

So if I'd been living in your neck of the woods back then, I'd have been in Junior High for three years!

OTOH, if you'd been living in my neck of the woods twelve years ago, you would've started junior high a year earlier, in '93!

Amazing. :o

Yeah, it's weird, isn't it? I guess not even within the same state do things stay the same. Every district has it's own way of doing things.  :)

Like when they start and end school. Lotsa schools are starting at the end of August, when it's still frickin' hot! What ever happened to going back to school in September...after Labor Day?

My elem. school would start in mid- September as I remember we'd be on vacation during that time and return shortly before school began. That was the point of Labor Day weekend for a lot of school kids, it was the last "hoo-rah" before school started. Welp, seems they've ignored that tradition  ;D

Some schools, like the one I work at, are year round.  I work 3 months then have a month off.  My months off are: July, Nov & March.  So I get to work during the hot months - thank goodness for air-conditioning. :)

Schools are also starting earlier, at least in California, because of all the new laws, like NCLB and the required "minutes" of teacher-student contact.  I guess they figure the more days we teach the smarter the kids.  ::)

Oh yes, I remember the "year round" schedule, which happened in the Los Angeles Unified School District in the early 90's. We started school in mid-August, got the whole month of January off, and restarted in mid-February, right after Presidents Day. And the entire school year ran until June 30th. It only lasted for two years for "every" school, thank god. Each year, I went to winter intercession, because otherwise my winter break would be longer than the summer break!

The year round schedule started when I was 12. I was SO bummed that I had to start school the day after the 4th of July. I think a good portion of schools have returned to traditional now.

Grade school, high school and college all started in the 2nd week of August and ended in the last week of May for me.

Let's see...when you were 12, I was 14. By then they had already gotten rid of it in LAUSD. However, there were some overcrowded schools in the Los Angeles area at the time, so only those got the year-round schedule beginning in the mid-90's. If you had been living in L.A. when you were 9, then you would've experienced going to school for most of the summer. Cuz' they used the year-round system for ALL the L.A. Unified schools for the 1991-92 and 1992-93 fiscal years. I hated that. >:(

Yeah, I think L.A. may have been a model in the decision for us to go into year round schooling. I know the idea had been floating around for a year or two, but I think it took some convincing before they decided to take that plunge. I hear ya, going to school during the summer was NOT fun. I mean, I adjusted, but not having the AC work in some of the rooms was NOT fun. This was an older school (probably built in 1960), too, and the hallways got really stuffy because it was hot out and because so many kids were traveling through them at once.

The District I work for is SO weird. . .  most of the schools are traditional, but 7 of them are year-round.  It is so stupid, but if you so many of your schools on a year round schedule you get more money from the state and as we all know by now.. . . . .  schools are not about education but about money.  :(

It seems like the High schools in our district stayed on traditional, but the elementary schools and junior highs went on the year round, but some of them I've heard have turned back to traditional. I find that odd, too, but yes, money seems to always play a part in this stuff.

I was born in January of 1988, so my childhood was in the 90s.  My adolescence has been in the 00s, I turned 13 in 2001. Right now im kinda in a transition state from being an adolescent to being a young adult(I graduated high school a year ago).

Yeah - our high schools are traditional.  Our district does not have junior highs.  Our schools are K-8 and then high school - 9-12.  Only some of the K-8 schools are year round - the rest traditional.  I am year-round and am stuck here with a group of students who want to be on vacation for 10 more very long days!  :P

Different strokes for different folks.

I have stated that most schools (esp. the public ones) have junior highs. However...many of the private schools in my area treat the junior high grades as elementary, going from K to 8. I went to one such school through the 2nd grade, so I sorta knew what it was like. In the 3rd grade, I also attended a private school, but they only went through 6th. I began going to public schools in 4th grade.

I went to a private school which was preschool through grade 12, talk about a wide range. I was even friends with the highschoolers - it was like one big family.  ;D

Born 1971

Schools around here are normal I guess you could say.
Elementary is K-5
Middle 6-8
High 9-12

Not year round though. They start school here in the 2nd week of August and go till the 2nd last week of May.
Longer days too. I believe it to be because of money and haveing to run the AC. 100-110F in June is pretty sick and those kids would eb roasting or the electric bills would be sky high!!

I went to private school as well for K-12, although they were two separate schools.
