Subject: The Most Overrated Band/Artist (of any era!!!)

Written By: woops on 01/30/05 at 2:18 am

Inspired from the  thread from the '80's forum  &  the Beatles thread on 'Before the '70's'...

Here's a couple bands I consider overrated:

I would also add Michael Jackson & Madonna, but I happen to like some of their material from the '80's. The same for the Jackson 5, which MJ was from in the '70's.

10. Oasis
IMO, they're just trying to emulate The Beatles
9. Jewel
Too bland and I can't stand her voice...
8. Miami Sound Machine
IMO, too annoying and they're considered the first Latin pop act to become mainstream though Lisa Lisa & The Cult Jam were around before them.
7. Mamas & The Papas
IMO, most of their songs were corny and I don't know why they were considered legends
6. Jefferson Airplane
No Comment...
5. Whitney Houston
I only like 1 song from hers ("I Wanna Dance With Somebody") and I actually can't stand her voice. Despite the despte the fact she's a great singer.
4. James Taylor
IMO, one of the most bland  '70's folk rockers I've ever heard.
3. Journey
Just don't get their music...
2. Sade
I just find her voice boring and so slow that I would think the radio is broken  ::)
1. Beach Boys
IMO, most of their songs sound a like and mostly about surfing and being at the beach. Not to mention corny.

Not listed: Norah Jones, Linkin Park, Korn, Maroon 5, Jay Z, John Mayer, Kanye West  etc.  (Most of today's artists & pop acts) :P

And country music since I can't stand the entire genre! :P

The most prominent one that jumps from my nut is...U2

They've done one or two fairly good numbers, but in the main they come across (to me at any rate) as pretentious 'stadium' dinosaurs...

I gave up on 'em about 1987-ish...

To be fair, they've made a shedload of cash out of it - Bono could probably wipe out a fair proportion of Third World debt (his favourite topic) by dipping in his own pocket...

And the second one that jumps from my nut...Prince (or whatever he's calling himself this week...)

Oh, and I agree with Whitney & Sade, btw...!

I agree with Whitney, Woops. She hasn't done anything decent since 1987.

I dissagree with Prince, Paul. I like a lot of his music (When doves cry, Little red Corvette, 1999 and Let's go crazy). Granted, some of it is pretentious (Alphabet Street and Paisley Park springs to mind).

Overated? Hmm! IMO . . .

Eminem
Busted
Sex Pistols
Bob Dylan

Here's my chance to raise some controversy: what about the Eagles??

Can someone please explain...? What is or has been their contribution to music in general?

I just think they're B O R I N G.

Off the top of my head...I've got

The Grateful Dead
Phish
Radiohead
Beck
The White Stripes
50 Cent
Manfred Mann's Earth Band

Note, I'm not saying that these bands are necessarily terrible...just not as good as conventional wisdom dictates.

I like Manfred Mann, Radiohead, Beck... I honestly think Radiohead isn't as good as people make it seem, but I like them. But Beck.. oy, he's over-promoting Guero, but I think he deserves some praise.

I like Radiohead alright also. I just don't buy that they are God's great gift to music, as many seem to believe. Beck is just too whiny for me.

Michael Jackson...nothing really decent since "Thriller"
Grateful Dead
Kid Rock...Scuzzy with no talent but being a slob
Oasis...better than the Beatles, whatever
Green Day.....Idiots
Rolling Stones...way past thier prime, though I admit they still can rock.
Pink Floyd...overplayed to DEATH! :P
Mariah Carey...my ears are STILL Bleeding from this banshee's voice
B-52's....sorry, never cared for them
Culture Club...a couple songs I like but just a couple.

Dishonorable Mention:

George Michael...though since his infamous restroom icident he's faded away.
MC Hammer...his career existed because he was able to say "Can't Touch This" over and  over and over and over :D ::)
Whitney Houston
Prince
Rush...yes Rush :P

Thank you for mentioning them, Mark (I agree with most of your list - though I do like pre-American Idiot Green Day)! ;)

For the record, they're not a BAD band at all, but I've never "gotten" their huge mass appeal. The only thing of theirs I'd ever choose to listen to is "Learning to Fly" - that was a cool 80's 'atmospheric hard rock' song.

I guess both them and Dave Matthews have alot of "stoner" fans, LOL!

Pink Floyd and The Rolling Stones are probably my pick for most overrated.  I can't stand either band.
