I say Both. The western parts of the Dakotas have rich western history but the eastern parts are a lot like Minnesota.

I would classify them as north central, with the emphasis on north...
...can you say lots of snow...? ;)

To the guy who voted Midwestern, would you include eastern and northern Montana as Midwestern too. Some parts of Montana are a lot like North Dakota.

Neither. They are Northern states. It's basic geography! ;D

Western, in fact I consider states west of Illinois to be Western.

I've always thought of them as midwestern. I don't know why, though.
