I say Real Estate, by a mile.  Although Penny Stocks are also very good.

I say real estate too.. no matter how bad the economy is, people still need a place to live.

Ahem! Assuming they can actually afford to buy the thing in the first place...

Being of British origin, I can certainly relate...

Well, if you buy a home and rent it out, you get the equity and your tenant makes the mortgage payment for you...they basically end up buying you a house.  it's a good deal.. i have 2 of them

Exactly. The price of property over here is ridiculous - and in London, it's even worse!  :o

I do agree that real estate, if you have enough money to get involved in it, is a good idea.

Actually, if you're really smart about it, you can get in for zippo I believe.

Sometimes you can buy a single family house for 0% down if you have excellent credit - it has to be intended as your primary residence...  so you buy a house with 0% down, plan to move in to the house but change your mind and rent it instead...

That doesn't work too well for duplexes & other multi-family units though.

Here's what you do.  You buy a house in a market that is just beginning to boom.  Within ten years you have a bunch of equity.  I have a house in Phoenix that I bought in 2000, it is now worth $45,000 more that what I paid for it.  Back in 2000 the housing in Phoenix was fairly cheap it's really starting to climb up there now.
