Subject: Is your best friend the same gender as you?

Written By: ADH13 on 03/18/05 at 8:11 pm

I have two best friends, and they are both men.  They both give me excellent advice, and help me to understand the sometimes quirky things my husband does.

I've had bad experiences with good friends in the past that were female.  I have lots of good friends who are women, but I've found that if I ever trusted them too much, they always burned me.  And they usually don't understand me as much as men do.

I'm also the kid of person who tends to speak my mind, good or bad, and while some women tend to be more sensitive, men seem to respect that about me.

I was just curious which gender you guys relate to better.

I tend to relate to older people (due to my tastes in music and the like) or people that can appreciate the past. I like to get on with people of both sexes but seem to lean slightly towards having women friends.  :)

First of all, it's great you have an extended family living with you. Family is an important aspect of life. However, life is a 50-50 chance. You will either hook up with good or bad friends. Your parents ought to be letting you make your mind up about what the world is like.

Through independence, you will be able to make better choices for the future.  :)

That's okay. I only asked your age because it determines what perspective I should take on your situation.  ;)

You're 13 (the teens can be tricky) and you're parents/grandparents may realise this. Some teens are vulnerable to the old drink, drugs and sex thing and a lot aren't. You are young but you should be allowed to make certain choices of your own (especially who you hang out with) because socialising is a handy skill to have. If you make great friends, you have gained more than having no friends and if you make bad friends, you have to rely on experience not to make the same mistakes again.  :)

Letting go of their children can be one of the big problems a parent faces. Do you talk to your parents about this?

I understand that, it's just I wish they would trust me. I've never done anything bad yet they think I have demons in me and think I'm a bad person :( I don't want to be a hermit for the rest of my life and yes I have talked to them once about this and all it did was make them mad at me. They are very hard to talk to.  :-\\

Really? I haven't seen any evidence of that. I am sorry your parents feel they can't trust you. I know it can be a dangerous world out there but sometimes you've got to take the bull by the horns. My girlfriend's son is about your age and we give him as much rope as we can, sometimes he has made bad decisions and sometimes he has made good. That is life. We have to let him deal with his crisis's as they arise - and so should your parents.

I don't want to be a hermit for the rest of my life and yes I have talked to them once about this and all it did was make them mad at me. They are very hard to talk to.  :-\\

You shouldn't be a hermit. I am sorry to hear that previous talks have ended badly. Can I ask you two more questions?

1. How do they feel about you being on and talking to people on the internet?

2. Are your grandparents/parents deeply religious?

They don't really know about my friends on here but once my grandpa saw that I had an instant messanger and got really mad. He also said once "Why do you need friends? The only people you need is your family!" that got me ticked. I think they are afraid that I'll spend more time/love somebody more than them?  :-\\

And yes they are VERY religious.

So your grandpa knew what instant messenger was about? Okay. His line about not needing friends is obviously false. You need your family, there is no doubt about it, but friendship is an important part of life as well. Without friends, there is no way to escape your family.  ;D

It could be a lot of reasons as to why they don't want you to make friends, it could be because of loosing your love and it could also be an issue of control.

And yes they are VERY religious.

That figures. I used to be religious, I'm not anymore but am not truly atheist. IMO religion is a way of controlling a massive amount of people. I can see that religion plants an idea of a negative world in the minds of it's followers.

What religion are your parents/grandparents?

Oh right! I was christened a methodist and then got involved in another religion later on. I believe Methodists are well known for their strict principles so their stance doesn't surprise me. They don't know about most of the music I listen to.....   :-\\ But yeah they think rock music is evil and stuff and they don't want me listening to it, I can't even listen to christian rock and my brother got in big trouble for his Creed cd. You sound just like me.  Most of my good friends are guys and I just can't relate to women that well.  I am very straight forward and not very emotional.  I've never been burned by any females and maybe that is because I've never gotten that close.

By the way, my best friend is my sister.

I just wondered if they got their ideas about you based on the music you listen to. I read on another thread that your mother is dating a prisoner. How do your grand parents view this? I mean, your mother doesn't seem to be a good example in making the right choices for relationships now, is she?  ;)  ;D

Well she isn't dating him but he sends her love letters and I would imagine she sends him love letters also. She is also thinking about marrying him which really scares me. My grandparents are furious about it and from what I know they ripped up some letters from the guy she writes to soooo...Yeah.  :-\\ My mom thinks that by writing to a prisoner it's going to teach me about giving people second chances.....

Yes I am and since I've been married I stopped talking to a lot of my male friends.  My husband isn't jealous, I just wasn't able to go out with them as much and we eventually became distant.  I doesn't help that I was in the AF and now my husband is, so we move around a bit and lose touch with friends.  Do you ever go on to Tickle.com?  I took a test on there that was supposed to rate how feminine or masculine your personality is and it rated me as 81% masculine. ::)

I was going to go out and get some news ones today.. but alas, it will have to wait.

It just dawned on me, that because i am leaving i wont be able to take any of my video games with me 'cus they won't work there.

I am going to trade them all in and get 4-5 new ones that i will play on until i leave.

Because i'm under 18 i get a nice one.

I have calculated it should be about £350.

Of course knowing the Inland Revenue i won't get it before i leave. Meh fair enough.

With any luck it will go in to my account before i come back for christmas.

No More Mr. Nice Guy by Alice Cooper

I used to be such a sweet, sweet thing
'Til they got a hold of me.
I opened doors for little old ladies,
I helped the blind to see.
I got no friends 'cause they read the papers.
They can't be seen with me and I'm gettin' real shot down
And I'm feeling mean.

No more Mister Nice Guy,
No more Mister Clean,
No more Mister Nice Guy,
They say he's sick, he's obscene.

I got no friends 'cause they read the papers.
They can't be seen with me and I'm gettin' real shot down
And I'm feeling mean.

No more Mister Nice Guy,
No more Mister Clean,
No more Mister Nice Guy,
They say he's sick, he's obscene.

My dog bit me on the leg today.
My cat clawed my eyes.
Ma's been thrown out of the social circle,
And dad has to hide.
I went to church incognito.
When everybody rose, the Reverend Smith,
He recognized me,
And punched me in the nose.
No more Mister Nice Guy,
No more Mister Clean,
No more Mister Nice Guy,
They say he's sick, he's obscene.

To those of you who said your spouse is your best friend, you are very lucky.  I love my husband very much and he is a good person, but he hasn't been my best friend in years.  I used to be able to talk to him but things have changed alot.

Things like this are common:

Me: What do you want for dinner?

Him: It doesn't matter.

Me: Ok, do you want lasagna?

Him: Nah.

Me: Ok.. umm.. do you want tacos?

Him: Nah.

Me: Ok, then what DO you want?

Him: I told you it doesn't matter!!!

Me: Well, obviously it DOES matter since you said "nah" to my two suggestions.

Him: JUST FORGET IT THEN!  If you're hungry, eat!  I'll find something for myself.

Me: Ok.  (So I make myself a big salad and eat it)

One hour later:

Him: Babe! I'm hungry.

Me: What do you want?

Him: It doesn't matter.

GRRRRRR!!!

Once again, this is too weird.  I was about to post the same thing. ;D  I can't see (at least from my point of view) how one can be best friends with their spouse.  I feel like there is a lot I can't tell my husband and I'm not talking about secrets, I mean there are conversations that I can't have with him because it will start an argument.  It's mainly because our views are too different on some things and we have to live together.  When I talk to my sister (my best friend) about things she doesn't agree with she doesn't argue with me.

How Michael Jackson found his way into this thread, I'm not too sure - is he someone's best friend or something?   ;D

Anyway, regardless of whether Michael is innocent or guilty, (on which I am completely undecided), I don't think this boy's mother should get any money.   Michael doing time is fine, Michael paying for any counseling or psychiatric services for the boy (payable directly to the counselor) is fine, etc.  I don't think emotional distress = cash cow.   Too many people use "emotional distress" as a get-rich-quick scheme and I can't help but wonder if this woman is one of them.  If this lawsuit came about and the mother KNEW she would not receive a dime, I would definitely think he was guilty.

My best friend is my husband. Oh yeah, there are times when i feel like strangling him, but there are times when i feel like doing that to some of my very good friends too. If i can live with real good friends who irritates the heck out of me, I definitely can accept the faults of my beloved.

Most of my good friends are guys, and my man doesn't have a problem with it, in fact he's pretty chummy with a couple of them.

At the end of the day, it boils down to this: my best friend is my husband, I can share my thoughts, my secrets and my all with him and vice versa. There are areas where we do not agree, but hey, we get that with non-spousal-best-friends too, right?

I'm lucky, I guess  ;)

I haven;t had a best friend in 13 years but as a guy if I had to have a best friend it would probably be a female because they are more warm sensitive, caring, and understanding than guys are and lot more flexible to communicate with. Funny thing is I used to not talk be comfy talking to any females when I was in High School and all the people I talked too were guys but I just think a female would make a better best friend than a guy at this point in my life.
