Subject: What was the last book you read?

Written By: AngeliK on 04/02/05 at 8:20 am

Seeing as there's a movie thread but not a book one....

I've just read all the Harry Potter's back to back and followed it with a Nikki French novel....

Now I'm reading The shipping news By Annie Proulx

Last book I read was a murder/mystery in New Orleans but I can't remember the name of the book.
I am currently (slowly) reading "All I Ever Really Needed to Know I Learned in Kindergarten" by Robert Fulgham. Amusing book.

bumping up this old thread.

I've just finished reading Feet in the Clouds by Richard Askwith.  It's a book about fell-racing and is very interesting, helped by the fact that I know, by name at least, some of the people he talks about.

I am reading the first Harry Potter book to my daughter at the moment.  It is taking ages to get through because we only read a two or three pages at a time!

I can't remember the title....but it was a murder mystery (my favorites)......however, Dean Koontz has a new one out that sounds very intriguing....so I might have to indulge.

I just bought several books today at the thrift store - one of them is a true crime novel. I haven't read a whole book in a very long time. When I do read it's short stories and I do a sort of "greatest hits" of Ray Bradbury, Kurt Vonnegut and Stephen King. I also have a compilation of horror short stories that I am fond of.  Oh, and DUNE!!! I hope to be able to read a book soon.

I've read a few of these.  not sure what numbers they are.

I've read A Morbid Taste for Bones, Saint Peter's Fair, something like One Body Too Many and something about a maiden under the ice.  And possibly one more.  I've enjoyed them.  Lots of the places mentioned really exist and you can go on Caedfael tours around Shrewsbury

It is "One Corpse Too Many" and "A Virgin in Ice". I have read all of those so far. They did turn a bunch of them into a series starting Derek Jacoby. They were very well done-some closer to the books than others.

I have heard that they do have tours at Shrewsbury-there is even a book that about Cadfael's herbatorium there complete with pics or the area. If I ever get to England, that is one of the stops I would like to make.

Including a re-reading of The Dark Knight Returns by Frank Miller (something I suggest EVERYONE, whether a fan of comics and Batman or not read)

Batman: Year One by Frank Miller and David Mazzucchelli

Batman: Year Two by Todd McFarlane, Mike W. Barr, Alan Davis, Paul Neary, and Alfreado Alcala

Batman: Death in the Family by Jim Starlin and Jim Aparo

Batman: The Long Halloween by Jeph Loeb and Tim Sale

Batman: Haunted Knight by Jeph Loeb and Tim Sale

A re-reading of Batman: The Killing Joke by Alan Moore and Brian Bolland

and in the non Batman area:

V For Vendetta by Alan Moore and David Lloyd

and Watchmen by Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons

also Ive been reading selections from Mad Art which is a compilation of all the artists who ever worked for Mad Magazine

also a book called Underground Comics

sorry, I needed a break from regular novels    8)

If you ever heard of Michael Basedan he does that radio show "Love, Lust, & Lies" that is synicated in cities like Philly, NEw York, and DC. His radio shows are usually from 3pm-7pm mostly on R&B stations. He is one of the best talk show hosts that has come out in a while in my opinion.

there basically are 3 titles and each has been divided into 2 books. You can purchase some sets like this, where The Fellowship Of The Ring is 2 books, The Two Towers is 2, and The Return Of The King is 2. I have 2 sets of LOTR, and each only contains the 3 main titled books, but in the table of contents at the beginning of each, you can see the chapters seperated as Book 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6

That's the set we've got.  We bought the revised 50th anniversary edition.

It's the first time I've read them.  At the time when some friends were reading them I was reading 1984, Brave New World, that type of thing.  I think, if someone had introduced them to me, I would have enjoyed them as a teenager as well.

Erotic literature must be done properly...not anyone who fancies it can just put pen to paper. It takes a certain kind of sensitivity which is rare in most people (male and female), and understand of what the French call...

Yeah, 'Talking Heads' is a collection of stories(?), each focuses on a different character and as each piece progresses, you learn more about that particular character. It's dead clever

I think there was a TV adaption, and Dora Third played the old woman in 'A Cream Cracker Under The Setee'

ah right I might look those out too, he has obviously been brought up in a very posh manner but I love his sarcastic swipes at the upper classes, he's very clever and witty. He writes reat stories and love his 'spoken word' tapes - especially funny is the one about the stuck up upper class woman who talks with cut glass English, all clipped vowels - asks for her lawn to be mowed, only she says it as "I'd like my lawn myrred" of course he takes the pss right left and centre at her la-di-dah voice.   ;D

'Talking Heads' doesn't really take that sort of direction, but I think it's fair to say the characters featured are more caricatures than real-life people. Like the old lady in 'cream crakcer' hates her home help and worries about everything, and things like that

Bunty and others like them were a rare treat.  My grandad used to bring my Brownie comic (it was Playhour before that).  I remember my brothers having comics delivered but I didn't until I asked for Jackie when I was about 11 or so.

I recently read "Face of a Stranger" by Anne Perry and liked it well enough.  When I read an author I like I look up their bio.  Well in 1954, when she was 16, she and her best friend murdered her best friends mother!  How is that for a bio note.  It seems friend was afraid of having to move away, so they got mom to take them on a walk in the country, then beat here to death.  How weird is that.  They each served 5 years because they were juveniles.  Even though Anne became well known as an author this other life was almost unknown until the 1994 movie "Heavenly Bodies" with Kate Winslet that told the story.

Gis,
have you read much of Alan Bennett, I've bought 2 books of his recently but haven't yet had the chance to read them.  Soon circumstances will be perfect for reading, so look forward to them.
Sorry not to reply to this sooner I've only just seen it. Yes I love Alan Bennett. I have been to see him give a reading and met him in real life too. Which books have you bought? The first book of talking heads is lighter than the second, that is very dark, one is written in the first person by a peodophile for example. His biography is good and The lady in the van too.

Subject: Re: What was the last book you read?

Written By: Gis on 06/02/06 at 1:34 am

Yeah, 'Talking Heads' is a collection of stories(?), each focuses on a different character and as each piece progresses, you learn more about that particular character. It's dead clever

I think there was a TV adaption, and Dora Third played the old woman in 'A Cream Cracker Under The Setee'
I think you mean Thora Hird !  ;)

ah right I might look those out too, he has obviously been brought up in a very posh manner but I love his sarcastic swipes at the upper classes, he's very clever and witty. He writes reat stories and love his 'spoken word' tapes - especially funny is the one about the stuck up upper class woman who talks with cut glass English, all clipped vowels - asks for her lawn to be mowed, only she says it as "I'd like my lawn myrred" of course he takes the pss right left and centre at her la-di-dah voice.  ;D
Actually he's not at all posh. He was brought up in a tiny village in Yorkshire though he did go to Cambridge University. He said he just loves listening to people and a lot of his funniest lines are ones he has overheard in real life. He carries a notebook at all times and writes down good /funny/ridiculous phrases as he hears people say them.

Running With Scissors - Augustun Burroughs

Augusten Burroughs is my favorite author.  I met him when he came to the Twin Cities back in May.  I love his books. I am looking forward to the movie coming out. I think it starts Friday. Some of his other books I would recommend are "Sellevision", "Dry", "Magical Thinking" and "Possible Side Effects".  I read Possible Side Effects a few months ago. Sadly, I read his books too fast, and have to wait for him to come out with a new one.

I am currently reading "Another Bullsh*t Night In Suck City" by Nick Flynn.  It's a memoir based in Boston. He works at a homeless shelter. It's tragically funny in that wry sort of way.

Here is a picture of Augusten Burroughs and myself when he came to the U of MN  for  a reading.

Jack Perkins: Confessions of an Economic Hitman

It's a great read for those unfamiliar with U.S. imperial practices.  Perkins doesn't tell me anything I did not already know.  If I hadn't read the truth about the World Bank, the IMF, the cosmic-scale usury the U.S. government inflicts upon vulnerable nations, and the economic piracy of Bechtel, Halliburton, and MAIN, Perkins' book would be a real eye-opener.  On the other hand, I might not believe Perkins if I had not read about the subject from other sources.

Perkins may be contrite about his role in imperialism, but he sure is smug about it.  He's awfully proud of his international adventures and world-wide womanizing.

Perkins' parents taught at an elite prep school.  He was a "fac brat," though he doesn't use the term.  My parents also taught at N.E. prep schools, so I could relate to some of his childhood bio.  However, I went to public high school.  Long story.

I say Confessions of an Economic Hitman is Ian Fleming meets Noam Chomsky.  It demands a screenplay.  I would suggest a collaboration between Oliver Stone and Michael Moore!

It's about an East Indian girl who moves to San Francisco. I admire this author. She deals with cultural differences, expectations of traditionalists, feminism, etc.  And she does it with humor.
