to take a gander at something means to look at it. Possibly devolved from a cockney rhyming slang phrase somehow. (gander and duck = look perhaps?)

It's a possible suggestion. One of my grandad's verbal quirks - though it was in common usage 20 or 30 years ago. :)

I can answer that! As far as I know, DAK is still at home. But since they're rebuilding it (something about sliding doors) he is currently offline. Shouldn't last long anymore, though.
